Updated software components in this release

This September 2009 8.1 release contains functionality to enable application-managed snapshots.

To use application-managed snapshots, you must be running SAN/iQ software version 8.x and

upgrade to the following software.

•SAN/iQ Cliq version 8.1.0.327

•Solution Pack version 8.1.0.63

Description

These release notes provide instructions for upgrading your software, and information about what

has been fixed in this release. These release notes are current as of the published date.

Enhancements

Using the new command line interface

Release 8.0 included a new command line interface that includes all SAN management functions

available for integration, automation or scripting. Install the CLI from the HP LeftHand Management

DVD.

NOTE:

To use the CLI, all storage nodes in the management group must be upgraded to 8.x. Verify the

management group version, as described in the Upgrade Guide, before using the CLI.

Name changes

In release 8.1, some platforms and software have been renamed. Table 1 lists the changes in platform

names, the software installation DVD, and two solution pack name changes. You may notice other

name changes throughout the product and documentation.

•10983 —Removed restriction on opening multiple CMCs in a terminal session.

•11131 —Managed snapshots of a SQL volume set may cause errors. Affects SQL Server® 2005

pre SP3. SP3 or Microsoft Hot Fix KB934396 fixes this issue.

•11361 —Fixed issue with the Cliq assignvolume command where lack of initiator name caused

an error even though it is an optional parameter.

•10391 —Fixed interaction between installed CLI and SAN/iQ software whereby repeated use

of a few specific commands could cause unexpected memory usage.

•10396 —Fix included to assure network card settings on the NSM 160 are consistently showing

that TCP Segmentation Offload is turned off to prevent network communication problems in some

environments.

•10398 —Fixed a rare problem in the storage server that caused it to spontaneously restart under

a combination of heavy IO load and snapshot deletes.

•10409 —Changed the display for the iSCSI gateway connection to Hostname(IP Address) instead

of just the IP address for ease of use.

•10410 —Fixed the incorrect reporting of CPU Utilization in alert notification and performance

dashboard.

•10415 —Added upgrade logic to attempt repair of OS array when possible during upgrade

rather than failing when encountering this rare condition.

•10417 —Added a check for verifying IP address format of the Virtual IP in the CLIQ command

modifyCluster.

•10418 —Added additional checking for a few specific CLI commands when executed from the

on-node CLI.

•10537 —Made the System Watch monitoring variable a permanent variable to assure it is not

accidentally deleted.

•10544 —Added RAID controller cache status to the CMC hardware report.

•10563 —Added a Node Summary report to the Centralized Management Console tasks menu

to provide an efficient way to gather basic storage node information from multiple nodes.

•10576 —Field imaging now can be performed with the SATA-DVD drive on the NSM 2060.

•10606 —Fixed issue that blocked upgrades and back-outs if the OS hardware RAID array is

degraded or rebuilding.

•Fixed issue where the Failover Manager and ESX Failover Manger were sharing install IDs which

could cause some confusion.

Fixes originally released as patches

•9928 —The background parity initialization status has been corrected for RAID 5 and RAID 6

Logical Drives.

•10354 —Insight Manager agents are now compatible with 5.2x firmware.

•10355 —Storage nodes upgraded to SAN/iQ 8.0 that use CHAP authentication, now have

sessions displayed in the SAN/iQ 8.0 Performance Monitor.

•10394 —Eliminated interruption of logging services and addressed a service connection issue

that can lead to a short term volume availability outage.

•10518 —For the NSM2060/NSM4150 storage nodes, compress the RAID controller log to reduce

space utilization issues of the log partition.

•10534 —Fixed issue where a disconnect from the CMC occurred when the Service Console is

trying to upload large log files.

•10553 —An upgrade process does not complete properly, which can result in SAN/iQ services

not restarting as expected.

•10633 —Prevent the SAN/iQ store service from consuming excess memory in certain situations

involving large volumes/snapshots.

Installation/upgrade instructions

Please read the Upgrade Guide for instructions about installing release 8.1

In the Storage section, navigate to Disk Storage Systems > LeftHand P4000 SAN Solutions and then

select your product.

After you upgrade

You will find the following changes the release 8.x software.

New in 8.0 —utilization computations

The formulas for computing snapshot and volume utilization have changed to more accurately reflect

the amount of space being used on the SAN.

Pre-8.0 utilization formulas

Utilization was computed as

(Used Space of snapshot + Used Space of Temp Space) / (Provisionable Space

of snapshot + Provisionable Space of Temp Space).

8.0 utilization formulas

Snapshot utilization is now calculated as the used space of the snapshot divided by the provisioned

space of the snapshot:

Used Space of snapshot / Provisioned Space of snapshot.

Volume utilization is calculated as the used space of the volume divided by the provisioned space of

the volume:

Used Space of volume / Provisioned Space of volume.

For thinly provisioned volumes, utilization will vary because the volume “autogrows”as data is written

to it. As utilization approaches 100%, the volume will autogrow and the utilization percent will

decrease. This pattern of increasing utilization, autogrow, and decreasing utilization repeats over

time and volume use.

Version requirements

To upgrade to release 8.1 SAN/iQ software, the storage nodes must be at version 7.0 or later. If

the storage nodes are at a lower version, please contact Customer Support for access to the interim

upgrade files. Refer to HP technical support for customer support contact information.

If you are upgrading to 8.1 from 7.x only, you must first ensure that the appropriate patches and

LSMD have been applied. See the Upgrade Flowcharts in the Upgrade Guide.

Required version of the Microsoft iSCSI Software Initiator - version 2.08 (or greater)

Mixed SAN/iQ software versions in clusters

Clusters can accommodate storage nodes running different versions of the SAN/iQ software. However,

you can only add storage nodes running a later software version to a cluster running an earlier

software version. For example, you can add a storage node running the 8.1 version software to a

cluster currently running the 7.0.0x software. You cannot add a storage node running 7.0.0x software

to a cluster running 8.1 software.

If you partially upgrade a cluster, the cluster will continue to run on the earlier software version until

the entire cluster is upgraded.

In the release 8.1 SAN/iQ software, the Failover Manager can be installed in the following

configurations. Note that VMware Server version 1.x does not support Windows 2008.

Adding the Failover Manager to VMware Server 2.0

1. Install VMware Server 2.0.

2. Install Failover Manager with the default options.

By default, the Failover Manager is installed into C:\Program Files \LeftHand Networks\Fail-

over Manager.

3. Open the VMware Server Home page and log in as administrator.

4. In the Commands section, select Add Datastore.

5. In the Add Datastore window, type the name of the datastore, Failover Manager.

6. Click OK to save the new Datastore.

7. Next, select Local Datastore and type the directory path for the Failover Manager.

The datastore now shows up in the Inventory panel as FOM.

8. In the Commands pane, select Add Virtual Machine to Inventory.

9. In the Add Existing Virtual Machine window, select the Failover Manager in the Inventory pane.

10. Select the FOM.vmx in the Contents pane and click OK.

11. Now, power on the FOM virtual machine (FOM.vmx).
