Connecting Computers to the KVM Switch

To connect a computer to the KVM switch, use the appropriate StarTech.com KVM

cable to connect from one of the PC ports located on the rear panel of the KVM switch

to the keyboard/mouse and VGA video ports on the computer.

If using audio, separately connect 3.5mm mini-jack cables for the speaker and

microphone connections from the same PC port to the sound card on the computer.

Repeat these steps for each computer you wish to connect to the KVM switch.

Cascaded Congurations

NOTE: The Master KVM switch must have equal or more PC ports than that of the Slave

KVM switch. For example, if an 8-port switch is the Master KVM switch, an 8-port or

4-port switch can be used as a Slave KVM switch, but a 16-port switch cannot be used.

The ports labelled PC 1 - PC 8 can be connected to either a computer or a Slave

KVM switch’s CONSOLE port, as shown below. Use only StarTech.com KVM cables to

connect the Master KVM switch’s PC ports and Slave KVM switch’s CONSOLE port, as

shown below:

KVM cables

The maximum number of computers controlled by a master/slave conguration with all

8-port units is 64, including 8 Slave KVM switches and each slave unit connecting to 8

computers as depicted below:

Instruction Manual

NOTE: A device (computer or KVM switch) on any PC port can be changed at any time

after initial power up. If you change any one of the PC1 thru PC8 connections from

a computer system to a Slave KVM switch or vice-versa, or simply change/replace

the device, the On-Screen Display (OSD) will update the next time the OSD menu is

activated.

After the connection has been completed, please reactivate the OSD menu to verify

that the Master KVM switch has recognized the Slave KVM switches. A triangle mark is

placed to the right of the Channel Name to indicate that the port connected is a KVM

switch and not a computer. A number to the left of the triangle mark indicates the

number of ports on the Slave KVM switch.

Operation

You may select a computer by pressing the front panel push button directly, by

issuing hot-key commands or by activating the OSD window. The front panel indicator

changes to reect the computer port selected (red) and whether the port is connected

to a powered computer (green). The indicator ashes red when it is in either Auto Scan

or Manual Scan mode.

Push Button controls

To select control of an attached computer, press the front panel button that

corresponds with the assigned computer number.

K/M Reset

K/M Reset resolves the majority of problems developed by keyboard and/or

mouse device replacement or conguration changes. Press down buttons 1 and 2

simultaneously for 2 seconds to recongure the whole system without having to turn

o the KVM switch or any attached computers.

Auto Scan

This KVM switch provides an easy to use feature to start Auto Scanning. To use this

function, simultaneously press buttons 7 and 8 and hold for two seconds.

Instruction Manual

The channel address (port number) of the currently selected computer is displayed in

red, same as the front indicator, to the right of the OSD title ’KVM MENU’.

The color of a device name is green if it has power and is ready for selection (its

corresponding front panel indicator is green), or the color is white as it has no power.

OSD menu updates the color when it is activated.

Use the <UP> and <DOWN> arrow keys to highlight a computer and the <ENTER>

key to select it. Or, you may press <ESCAPE> to exit the OSD and remove the OSD

menu from the display; the status window returns to the display and indicates the

currently selected computer or operating status.

A triangle mark ( ►) to the right of a name indicates the port is cascaded to a slave

switch; the number at the left of the triangle mark indicates the number of ports the

slave has, (i.e. 8 for SV831DUSBAU). The <ENTER> key brings you one level down and

another screen pops up listing the names of the computers on that slave. The name of

the slave will be shown at the upper right corner of the OSD menu. It is useful to group

computers and still be able to see the group name.

An eye mark (N) to the right of a name indicates the computer is selected to be

monitored in Scan mode. In the OSD, this mark can be switched on or o by function

key <F2>.

Press the <ESCAPE> key to exit the OSD and to return to the selected computer, the

computer name is also shown on the screen.

Function key <F1>: To edit the name entry of a computer or a slave, use

the <UP> and <DOWN> arrow keys to highlight a

channel, then press <F1> followed by name entry.

Valid characters are ‘A’~’Z’, ‘0’~’9’ and the dash

character. Lowercase letters are converted to

uppercase ones.

Press the <BACKSPACE> key to delete a letter one

at a time. Non-volatile memory stores all name en

tries until you change them, even if the unit is

powered down.

Function key <F2>: To switch the eye mark (N) of a computer on or o.

First, use the <UP> and <DOWN> arrow keys to

highlight it, then press <F2> to switch it’s eye mark

on or o. If Scan Type is ’Ready PC + N’, only the

power-on and eye mark selected computers will be

displayed sequentially in Scan mode.
