1. General and Safety Details
Congratu ations on your purchase of an eMOTION XXL Decoder. The eMOTION XXL Decoder is an
exceptiona , high-performance Digita Decoder designed for G-Sca e by Massoth E ektronik GmbH, Germany.
We high y recommend reading this manua and the documentation carefu y and thorough y before operating
your eMOTION XXL Decoder.
Massoth E ektronik GmbH used the atest in techno ogy in designing and manufacturing the eMOTION XXL
Decoder. Exce ent operation at a times is assured by the high safety standard in data processing and by
de ivering an exceptiona power output and performance. Future a terations of the DCC standards are easi y
imp emented into the eMOTION XXL Decoder by updating. The atest F ash-Techno ogy is uti ized in the
eMOTION XXL Decoder to provide a safe and consumer-friend y operation during updating.
2. Important Information for Operation
Insta your decoder in comp iance with the connecting diagram in this manua . The decoder is protected
against shorts and excessive oads. However, in case of a connection error e.g. a short between a ight and the
motor, this safety feature cannot work and the decoder wi be destroyed subsequent y.
The decoder is origina y programmed on address #3 with 14 speed steps. In case you want to use a high
address, you have to program CV17, CV18, and CV29 according y. If you want to use 28 speed steps you need
to set CV29-Bit1 to ”2”. Otherwise the ights might not work or may f icker.

2.3. Hook-Up to a LGB® gear box (I ustration 3)
A current LGB® gear boxes feature 4 contact pins on the upper side. To uti ize these gear boxes for digita
operation the pins must be connected to the eMOTION XLS Sound Decoder according to the schematic be ow.
O der versions of LGB® gear boxes have on y 3 contact pins. These gear boxes need to be changed for digita
operation. One pin is connected to the motor and the track. This connection needs to be disconnected as the
motor and the track must be iso ated for digita operation.

2.4. General Hook-Up
The decoder features three ight outputs on the decoder. These are front ight, rear ight and interior ight. Front
and rear ight are activated according to the driving direction. The interior ight are activated in both directions.
P ease observe the maximum current for each output: 500mAmps/output. Light bu bs and other consumer
oads (e.g. smoke generator) are connected to Dec+ and the respective output (LF, LR or A1, see i ustration 4).
Light bu bs and smoke generators used must be suited for 24 Vo ts. In case 5Vo t bu bs and smoke generators
are used, p ease see in “Advanced Functions“ (Chapter 3.2) for the correct output setting.
2.5. Basic Factory Settings
•V1 = 3 (loco address)
•Light outputs adjusted to full track voltage (for 19/24 Vo t bu bs)
•Switching Speed on/off by F8 (ha f speed)
•Functions Outputs A1 to A6 mapped to Function Keys F1 to F6
•V29 = 4 (to comply with 14 speed steps for MTS) For 28 speed steps, CV29 must be set to “6“.
•V49=2 (on y para e functions. For seria set CV49 to 3)

Note: The ight function depends on the se ected speed step setting. In case the setting in CV29 is not
identica to the setting of the digita contro system, the ights may f icker or may not work at a . (Irre evant
when using 128 speed steps).
2.6. Installation
The decoder MUST NOT touch any meta ic constructiona e ements. This may ead to short circuits and to the
destruction of the decoder subsequent y.
3. Advanced Settings
3.1. MASSOTH Bus Interface
The MASSOTH bus interface connects to components with specia digita contro functions, e.g. the MASSOTH
Pu se Smoke Generator.
3.2. Function Outputs
The eMOTION XXL Decoder is fitted with 6 function outputs. A ight outputs are set to 24Vo ts as defau t. This
means, at 24Vo ts track vo tage the function outputs A1 to A6 de iver 24Vo ts, if activated. The output vo tage
as we as the function of the ight and function outputs may be set by programming (function key a ocation,
direction sensitivity, f ashing function and short-term function). See the CV ist for further detai s. The outputs
may be contro ed by NMRA-DCC commands as we as with seria LGB® pu se chain commands. The ight
outputs and the function outputs A1 to A4 are dimmab e.
3.3.1. Serial Pulse hain for LGB®- Interface
The factory defau t setting of the eMOTION XXL decoder provides on y para e data processing. Therefor the
decoder may be uti ized with a NMRA digita systems. The seria data processing mode may be activated, thus
occurs a brief waiting period of 0.5 secs with F1.
Specia settings for seria pu se chain or para e function data processing:
CV49 = 2 : Para e function triggering on y
CV49 = 3 : Seria and para e function triggering
CV49 = 11 : Seria pu se chain on F1 for 6po e LGB®- Interface with sound modu e (e.g. P-Updates of LGB®-
sound modu es).
3.3.2. R Servo Hook-Up (I ustr. 5)
The eMOTION XXL decoder is fitted with a specia A3 output which is on y usab e for RC servo operation. This
output cou d be activated with CV121.
RC servos are especia y suited for point-to-point movements (e.g. de-coup er, pantograph) or circu ar motions.
The RC servo needs a 5Vo t regu ator additiona y and the contro commands of the decoder.
The end-positions are defined in CVs. In case the function is switched “ON“, the servo is positioned in one of
the end-positions, in case the function is “OFF“, the servo wi trave to the opposite end-position.
In addition the trave speed may be adjusted.

3.3.3. Hook-Up of a Power Buffer
A power buffer may be insta ed to improve the operationa re iabi ity. The buffer connects to “Dec+“ and “Dec-“.
The charging current must not exceed 500 mAmps.
Ana og operation must be disab ed with a power buffer connected to the eMOTION XXL Decoder otherwise the
decoder recognizes the power buffer as an ana og power supp y (CV29 bit2).
The power buffer must be switched off during programming.
The MASSOTH Power Buffers (#8151001 or #8151501) are switched off automatica y during programming if
you connect the white contro ine to “A5“ with the power buffer contro function activated in CV118 = 31. Then
the A5 output cannot be used for other purposes.
3.4. Motor Output
Depending on which digita system uti ized different speed steps may be used. The more steps are used the
smoother the ocomotive responds to the thrott e. In Garden G-Sca e 14 speed steps are used and 28 speed
steps are recommended if supported by the digita system.
•The direction of driving (inc uding the direction re ated functions) can be reversed by setting CV29 - bit0
according y.
•Three settings of speed contro are avai ab e:
14 speed steps (CV29 – bit1 = Off)
28 speed steps (CV29 – bit1 = On)
128 speed steps (is detected automatica y)
Using the eMOTION XXL with LGB® MTS I or II requires a 14 speed step setting. This is the factory defau t
setting of the decoder.
Severa CV settings in the eMOTION XXL Decoder inf uence the acce eration and dece eration characteristics
of the ocomotive. The acce eration/dece eration characteristic is defined by 2 CVs:
•Acce eration de ay (CV3)
•Dece eration de ay (CV4)
The time ag between speed 0 and the maximum speed (or reverse) is 0.5 sec if the setting is “1”, maximum
possib e is 128 sec (setting “255”). Simp y divide your desired time de ay by “2” to acquire the respective CV
setting.

Driving urve
The speed characteristic of the ocomotive is defined by the driving curve which is programmed by 3 CVs. The
standard driving curve is inear.
Decoders ike the eMOTION XXL Decoder feature 3 CVs to define the speed parameters. The basic setting of
the eMOTION XXL Decoder is shown in the i ustration above.
•The start vo tage (CV2) defines the driving vo tage of speed step1. The sma er the vo tage the s ower the
ocomotive drives. If the PI-Load Contro is “off” and the ocomotive does not move in speed step 1, the start
vo tage shou d be increased.
•The maximum speed (CV5) may be reduced by inserting sma er va ues.
•The mid-speed (CV6) defines how many speed steps are avai ab e. In case CV6 is ha f of the va ue of CV5,
a speed steps are distributed equa y. In case CV6 is sma er than ha f the va ue of CV5 the ocomotive wi
drive s ower at mid-speed; the s ow speed range wi be stretched.
As an a ternative you may program the driving curve individua y in 28 speed steps (CV67 - CV94). This driving
curve is activated by CV29- bit4. In this case the CVs 2, 5, and 6 are deactivated!
Motor ontrol Frequency
Basica y the motor runs quieter and smoother when the contro frequency is increased. The motor contro
frequency is defined in 4 steps by CV9. At 16 kHz the motors are operating at its optimum and runs very quiet.
A few types of motors may require a ower setting if they do not run smooth y or get hot. The integrated oad
contro works on y with 16 kHz. The eMOTION XXL Decoder is usab e with a kinds of DC motors.
Load ontrol
The eMOTION XXL Decoder monitors the driving performance of the ocomotive and regu ates the driving
vo tage. The oad contro governs the speed of the ocomotive regard ess of up or down grades or the ength of

the train. This means the decoder de ivers more vo tage to the motor(s) if the ocomotive is running uphi in
order to keep the speed constant. The eMOTION XXL Decoder is equipped with a state-of-art integrated PI-
Load Contro (proportiona -integra ) that can be programmed efficient y by 3 CVs. These 3 CVs define the
characteristics of the PI-Load Contro by the fo owing parameters: maximum re-adjustment factor (a owed
readjustment per adjustment interva ), re-adjustment retardation (frequency of the adjustment interva s), and
maximum re-adjustment strength (maximum re-adjustment to the speed setpoint).
Maximum Re-Adjustment Factor ( V60)
The maximum re-adjustment factor sets the range of change per re-adjustment interva for the motor vo tage
(see CV61), input range is 0 … 255. The arger the va ue the more aggressive the decoder wi react to oad
changes. In the most extreme cases the ocomotive wi overcontro and tend to drive jerky during oad changes.
Re-Adjustment Retardation ( V61)
The re-adjustment retardation defines how often the eMOTION XXL Decoder is a owed to re-adjust per
second. Increasing the va ue means an increase of re-adjustments per second. The eMOTION XXL Decoder is
ab e to perform up to 4000 adjustments per second. The basic setting is “60”. This resu ts in a eisure y and
rea istic contro characteristic. Formu a: 4000/(CV-va ue) = Number of adjustments per second.
Re-Adjustment Strength ( V62)
An examp e wi exp ain this matter best: The motor vo tage is insufficient to keep the speed as the oad
increases. The PI- oad contro kicks in and regu ates (increases) the motor vo tage according y to make sure
the ocomotive continues with the same speed. The re-adjustment strength is the maximum a owab e vo tage to
achieve the required speed. The se ectab e va ue range is 0…255. The basic setting is “255”, the maximum
strength. This means the eMOTION XXL Decoder is a owed to increase the motor vo tage up to the track
