Audio Analyzer Demonstration Procedure

This document demonstrates ve simple

examples of using the U8903A. They are:

– GUI intuitiveness and shallow menu tree

– Loop test

– FFT analysis

– Time domain graph analysis

– Frequency or amplitude sweep analysis

Demonstration Preparation

The following instruments

are used in this demon-

stration guide:

– U8903A Audio Analyzer

– One BNC cable

– One XLR cable (optional)

– Projector or PC monitor with

VGA cable – if you have a large

crowd

1. GUI Intuitiveness and Shallow Menu Tree

Objective:

To demonstrate the features, capabilities, and intuitiveness of the

Graphical User Interface (GUI) and menu tree.

1. Switch [ON] the equipment.

2. If you have a large crowd and a projector or PC monitor is available

in the meeting room, connect the VGA cable (from the projector/ PC

monitor input) to the VGA output from the equipment as shown in

Figure 1.

Note: Once connected, the projector/PC monitor will show the same

display as seen on the equipment front panel.

PROCEDURE:

Generator setup

1. Press [Generator] to activate the Generator function.

2. Use the arrow keys to select Channel 1 and Channel 2 of the Generator.

Note: The active channel will be highlighted (see Figure 2).

3. Use the Generator menu to create various settings for audio signal generation, with waveform type, frequency,

amplitude, DC offset, and output as the main settings.

4. Press [Waveform] to show the various waveforms that can be generated such as Sine, Variable Phase, Dual Sine

(different frequency but same amplitude), Noise, DC, Multitones (60 Tones), Square, and Arbitrary.

5. To return to the previous menu tree, press [Return].

6. Press [Output Settings] to access the Generator settings on the Output Type – Balance or Unbalanced and

Impedance.

Note: All the selections made will be reected on the Generator screen.

7. Press [Frequency] and [Amplitude] to change the value of the frequency and amplitude for the signal to be

generated.

Note: You can key in the value from the alphanumeric keyboard in the front panel, or rotate the knob to get to a

higher or lower value. To conrm the value, press [Enter] on the arrow key.

Analyzer setup

8. Press [Analyzer] to activate the Analyzer function.

9. Repeat Step 2 to choose which Analyzer channel to be activated (see Figure 3).

10. Use the Analyzer menu to select the measurement functions, units, and measurement settings, and to set the

reference values as main settings.

Function 1 (First

11. Function 1 indicates the rst measurement parameter and Function 2 indicates the second measurement

parameter.

(Figure 4 shows that Function 1 refers to Frequency measurement while Function 2 refers to Vac measurement).

12. Press [Function 1] to select Frequency, Vac, or Vdc measurement parameter.

13. Press [Function 2] to select Frequency, Vac, Vdc, SNR, Noise Level, SINAD, THD+N Ratio, THD+N Level,

X-talk (Crosstalk), SMPTE, DFDs, and Phase measurements.

14. Press [Units] to select the measurement engineering unit for Function 1 and Function 2 measurement.

15. Press [Analyzer Settings] to select Coupling, Detector, Filter, Input Type, and Range settings.

– Press [Coupling] to select AC or DC coupling.

– Press [Detector] to select RMS, QPK, or Peak to Peak detector.

– Press [Filter] to select None, LP (Low Pass), HP (High Pass), or Weighting lters.

– Press [Input Type] to select Balance or Unbalanced input.

16. To show the different lters, combine the LP, HP, and Weighting lters in one analyzer channel.

– Press [Filter] > [LP] and select 15 kHz.

– Press [HP] > 22 kHz.

– Press [Weighting] > A-Weighting.

– The 15 kHz and 22 kHz will create a bandpass lter. Create an A-Weighting lter in the bandpass lter

(see Figure 4).

Note: You can combine a maximum of three different lters, that is, one lter from each lter category.

– Before proceeding to the next demonstration, “Loop Test”, clear the lter by pressing [Filter] > [None].

Press [Rel/Ref] for ratio measurement.

17. Press [Rel/Ref] for ratio measurement.

18. To show the Generator and Analyzer on the same display screen, press [Display/Mode] under the

System panel (see Figure 5).

POINTS TO MENTION:

– Easy to set up.

– User-friendly GUI and very intuitive.

– Shallow menu tree.

– Custom lter can be saved, recalled, and

created using MATLAB, Keysight VEE,

and other programming software, and

uploaded via USB, LAN, or GPIB.

– Can display both Generator and Analyzer

channel measurement functions on the

same screen.

RESULTS:

PROCEDURE:

Generator setup

1. Press [Generator] to activate the Generator function.

2. Use the arrow keys to select Channel 1 from the Generator or Analyzer menu.

3. By default, the output Frequency value and Amplitude value are xed at 1 kHz and 0 Vrms. (Recommended

to set at 1 Vrms.)

4. Press [CHANNEL] or [OUTPUT] to start the signal generation.

5. In Channel 1, the Generator status changes from “Stopped” to “Running”.

2. Loop Test

Objective:

To demonstrate the self-test feature of the audio analyzer. The Generator

channel creates the signal and loops the signal to the Analyzer channel

for measurements.

BNC

1. Switch [ON] the equipment.

2. If you have a large crowd and a project/PC monitor is available in the

meeting room, connect the VGA cable (from the projector/ PC monitor

input) to the VGA output from the equipment as shown in Figure 1.

Note: Once connected, the projector/ PC monitor will show the same

display as seen on the equipment front panel.

3. Connect the Generator Channel 1 and the Analyzer 1 with BNC cable or

XLR cable (optional) (see Figure 6).

Note: A BNC connection indicates the connection is unbalanced. An XLR

connection indicates that the connection is balanced.

POINTS TO MENTION:

– Each of the channels works independently. Therefore, you can output two different signals

from each Generator and analyze two different signals independently.

PROCEDURE:

6. Press [Analyzer] to activate the Analyzer function.

7. You must activate the Analyzer Channel 1 by using the arrow key because the BNC connector is connected to

the Analyzer Channel 1 . By default, Function 1 and Function 2 are xed at Frequency measurement and Vac

measurement.

8. Press [CHANNEL] to activate the Generator function.

9. In Channel 1, the Analyzer status changes from “Stopped” to “Running” as shown above.

10. You can repeat the previous steps by changing the Generator and the Analyzer to Channel 2 after the BNC

cable is connect to Channel 2.

Note: You must physically connect the BNC cable to Channel 2 of the Generator and the Analyzer.

3. FFT Analysis

To demonstrate the FFT analysis features in the audio analyzer.

Objective:

PREREQUISITE:

1. Switch [ON] the equipment.

2. If you have a large crowd and a project/PC monitor is available in the

meeting room, connect the VGA cable (from the projector/ PC monitor

input) to the VGA output from the equipment as shown in Figure 1.

Note: Once connected, the projector/ PC monitor will show the same

display as seen on the equipment front panel.

3. Connect the Generator Channel 1 and the Analyzer Channel 1 with the

BNC cable or XLR cable (optional)(see Figure 6).

Note: A BNC connection indicates that the connection is unbalanced. An

XLR connection indicates that the connection is balanced.

PROCEDURE:

Generator setup

1. Press [Generator] to activate the Generator function.

2. Use the arrow keys to select Channel 1 from the Generator or Analyzer menu.

3. By default, the output Frequency value and Amplitude value are xed at 1 kHz and 0 Vrms. (Recommended to

set at 1 Vrms.)

4. Press [CHANNEL] or [OUTPUT] to start the signal generation.

5. In Channel 1, the Generator status changes from “Stopped” to “Running” as shown below.

PROCEDURE:

Frequency domain setup

6. Press [Frequency Domain] .

7. Press [Monitor settings] to change the graph monitor settings (see Figure 10).

8. Ensure that the Channel 1 box is checked. Press DOWN arrow key and the monitor settings will be

highlighted sequentially (that is the Analysis Mode, Windows, etc). Press [ENTER] to activate the drop-down

menu from the Window and select Blackman-Harris.

9. Press DOWN arrow key to No. Of Points. Press [ENTER] to activate the drop-down menu and select

8192 points.

10. Press [Apply] to save the setting.

11. Go to [Axis settings] and change the axis setting (see Figure 11).

12. Press DOWN arrow key to X-Axis Right, press [ENTER] and enter 10 kHz from the alphanumeric keyboard.

Press [Apply] to save the setting.

13. Press [CHANNEL] to start the measurement.

POINTS TO MENTION:

– You can save the graph raw data

points to USB external ash storage

in a .csv le format. You can then plot

the graph in Microsoft Excel.

Press [Harmonics View] to display the level of each

signal harmonic component of the frequency do-

main analysis. You may congure the fundamental

frequency, select the channel, and enter the number

of harmonic components data that will be computed

in the table.
