Internet at the
Desktop
At the rst glance, the snom 200 does not look like a „Voice over
IP“ telephone. As a matter of fact, the plastic was taken from a ISDN
telephone from Elmeg — a German telephone manufacturer who builds
phones for more than 50 years.
We think this is good. End users are not asking for technology,
they are asking for solutions. The snom 200 feels just like a „normal“
phone. When you read this manual, most of the time you will think this is
just another phone.
The Internet makes its way to the telephone. Just like Email and
the World Wide Web has revolutionized the exchange of paper, we believe
that Voice over IP will do the same with real time comminications. In a few
years we will ask ourselfs why we were transporting voice over seperate
lines. For you, that future starts today!
Enjoy becoming callable with your Email-account name and ma-
king phone calls without caring about the bill over the Internet!
Sincerely,
Dr. Christian Stredicke Nicolas Peter-Pohland

Installation
The rst time when you turn the phone on, it will perform some
checks to ensure that everything is all right. Depending on you network
setup, this procedure may take between one and ten minutes.
Updating the Software
When you turn of the phone the rst time, a better rmware and/
or bootloader version than the software version on the phone might be
available. It is recommended to accept the software update by pressing
the ENTER key.
It takes a few minutes to download the software from the Inter-
net and load it onto the memory of the phone.
IMPORTANT: When the phone updates the software, do dot
turn off the power. This might bring the phone into a state that cannot be
recovered.
Wizard Setup
When the latest software has been loaded, a setup wizard checks
that the most relevant settings are available. During the checking, you
will hear a startup melody and see on the screen:
First of all, you can select your preferred language. Select you
language by using the LEFT and RIGHT key, you can also use keys F1 and
K3 in this case.

Press ENTER when you have selected the language of your
choice.
If the phone automatically received an IP address, a network
mask, a IP gateway and at least one DNS server address, it will skip as-
king the network question. This is typically the case when you use the
phone in a DHCP environment.
If you answer this question with „yes“ (by pressing F1), the pho-
ne will reboot and try again to get an DHCP identity.
If you press No (F3), the phone will prompt you for an IP address.
Please enter your IP address. To enter a point, you can use the star key
(*).
After pressing ENTER, you will be asked for the netmask, IP gate-
way and DNS server addresses as well. Make sure that these settings are
correct. The phone will reboot after you changed the network identity to
make sure that everything is set up correctly.
Then you can select your prefered dial tone. This tone will be
used when the called party does not play a dial tone and the phone has
to generate the tone.
After selecting the dial tone, you must also select the time zone.
The phone offers a number of time zones around the world including their
daylight saving rule.
The phone then should go to the idle screen, where it displays the
current time. Probably the phone did not get a time information, therefore
don‘t be surprised the phone believes it‘s still in computer stoneage.
