Before you begin:

•Inspect the package contents. Refer to the package contents document

enclosed with the product.

•Ensure sufficient power is available. Supply circuits should be protected

by a maximum 20A circuit breaker.

•Ensure a minimum of 6 inches clearance in the front and back of the

chassis.

•Verify that all firewalls between WX devices allow traffic on TCP/UDP

ports 3577 and 3578, and for IPComp, the IP payload compression proto-

col used for reduction tunnels between devices (protocol number 108).

•Identify a 10/100 Ethernet LAN port that transmits data to your WAN

router. This port is typically from an aggregation switch, or from another

LAN device connected directly to the router.

•Obtain a license key. The license key determines the throughput levels

for the device, and properly registers the product. To obtain a permanent

license key, go to https://www.juniper.net/generate_license.

Installation:

➊Set up the chassis.

•For rack mount installation, install the supplied brackets, front panel

forward, to the sides of the device.

•For desktop installation, install the rubber stands in the recessed

areas on the bottom of the chassis (pre-installed on the WX 15).

NOTE: Do not connect the power cable until Step 4.

➋Connect the network cables.

To connect the network cables:

•Locate the cable that connects from the switch (or other aggregating

device) to the router.

•Disconnect this cable from the router port and connect it to the

LOCAL port on the WX device.

•Connect a straight-through cable (not provided) from the router port

to the REMOTE port on the WX device.

➌Verify connectivity across the WX device.

One method of testing connectivity between devices is to Ping a host on

the remote side of the device from a host on the local side of the device.

NOTE: If you are not able to verify connectivity on both sides of the device,

do not proceed to the next step. Ensure that you are using the correct cables

(crossover vs. straight-through), and verify that there is network connectivity

before applying power.

•Type “save-config” and type “y” to confirm. You can safely bypass the other configuration questions at this time.

NOTE: By default, the 10/100 interfaces are set to auto-negotiate the speed and duplex mode. However, you may want to set

the interface speed and duplex mode manually. The LOCAL port settings should match the interface settings of the switch,

and the REMOTE port settings should match the interface settings of the router.

➏Check the LEDs next to the 10/100 Ethernet ports.

5•If the LINK LEDs light, the device is properly connected. If they do

not light, toggle the MDI/MDI-X buttons (WX 20 and WXC 250 only).

5•The 100/10 LEDs indicate 100 Mbps connectivity.

5•On the WX 15, press Bypass Disable to block traffic during a power

failure (used in high-availability environments).

After checking the LEDs, you should verify connectivity across the

device again (as described in Step 3).

Quick Setup.

➋Select an Operating Mode.

A device can run in Active mode or Profile Mode.

•Active Mode —Active operation where the device reduces data, accelerates TCP applications, and manages bandwidth.

•Profile Mode — Passive operation where the device can calculate potential data reduction statistics for all traffic,

individual applications, and specific remote subnets. The actual traffic is not affected.

NOTE: To use Profile Mode, the device’s Local interface must be connected to a mirrored port on the switch, and the Remote

interface must be disconnected. If you have installed the device inline, do not select Profile Mode as data will be dropped.

For more information about Profile Mode, refer to the Operator’s Guide.

•Click Next to continue.

WX 15, WX 20, and WXC 250 QUICK START

➌Registration Server Setup.

One device must be designated as the Registration Server.

•To designate this device as the registration server, enter a registration server password in the appropriate fields.

Do not designate a WX 15 as the registration server (except in test environments).

The registration server password authenticates the devices in a community, and should be different from the

administrator password.

•If this device is not the registration server, enter the IP address and password of the current (or future) registration

server in the appropriate fields. This device will not process data until the registration server is configured.

•If you select the option to delay the formation of reduction tunnels, this device will not reduce or assemble data from

other devices until you enable reduction tunnel formation in the Endpoints page of the Web console.

•Click Next to continue.

➍Set the Time.

•If your network uses an NTP server for device time settings, enter the IP address of the NTP server. Otherwise, enter

the current time, date, and local time zone for the device. If applicable, select the Daylight Savings checkbox.

•Click Next to continue.

➎Specify Feature and Topology Settings.

The feature and topology settings ensure that device resources are used efficiently to reduce and assemble data.

• Select Active Flow Pipelining (AFP) or AFP and Application Flow Acceleration if you want to use these features. Note that

the WXC 250 requires AFP for optimum performance.

• Choose the topology setting that best describes the device’s relationship to the other WX devices in the community (Hub,

Spoke, or Mesh). For a Hub or Mesh device, select the range of devices in the community.

• For the WXC 250 only, enter the sum of the speeds for all the outbound circuits on the adjacent router that carry traffic

from the device to the WAN. If the speed is variable, enter the maximum speed (up to the Ethernet speed of the

WXC 250). The WAN circuit speed is advertised to the remote WXC devices as the maximum speed at which to access

this device.

• Click Next to continue.

WX 15, WX 20, and WXC 250 QUICK START

➏Advertise Local subnet.

By default, the device’s local subnet is not advertised to the other WX devices in the community. As a result, data destined for

this subnet is not reduced — even if there is a WX device in the path.

•If you want other WX devices to reduce data destined for this subnet, select the Advertise checkbox.

If you choose not to advertise the local subnet, you should review the Reduction Subnets page of the Web console

after completing the Quick Setup.

•In the Device name field, you can assign a name for the device.

•Click Next to continue.

❼Enter a license key.

By default, each device has a 30-day evaluation license. When the evaluation license expires, data will pass through the device

without reduction.

If you have purchased the device, you can use the serial number to obtain a permanent license key through the Online

License Service. The License Key server is accessible by clicking Online Serviceor by calling Support at 1-888-314-JTAC (or
