Critical issues

All issues for the Service Release are described under the major categories listed under "Issues and

workarounds" on page 4. However, HP directs your attention to the issues below, which are deemed of

critical importance, and repeats them here for your convenience.

Critical issues

Issue: Blue screen condition occurs when using Microsoft® Windows® Server 2003 SP1 with

StorageWorks NAS and ProLiant Storage Server products

Description Microsoft has offered Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1). If SP1 is

installed directly without Service Release 5.6 or the system patch provided in the

previous Service Release (SR5.5), a blue screen condition occurs when the HP

NAS server is restarted after the SP1 installation. At that point, the NAS server

no longer operates. The following customer bulletin contains further details and

affected products:

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/

Document.jsp?objectID=PSD_CB0204W

Workaround HP highly recommends that you install Windows Server 2003 SP1 using

the SR5.6 software. To learn more and order the Service Release, go to

http://software.hp.com, and select the Storage and NAS link under Product

Category. Select the HP Storage Server Service Release link for more information

about updates and enhancements.

Issue:Telnet service missing after SP1 installation

Description On all HP ProLiant Storage Server and StorageWorks NAS models, the Telnet

service can get uninstalled after installing Microsoft Server 2003 Service Pack 1.

The uninstallation of the Telnet service is caused by a system name of 15 or more

characters, and the service is not listed in Service Control Manager. Once the

Telnet service is uninstalled, it cannot be reinstalled.

Workaround Use a system name of 14 characters or less before installing Service Pack 1 so

as to not uninstall the service.

Service Release 6.2 installation

This section details known issues with the installation of Service Release 6.2 or use of the HP NAS

Updater utility. Applying this Service Release will update the ProLiant Storage Server using Windows

Storage Server 2003 SP1 to version 6.2 for the Service Release and version 5.6.2 for the ProLiant

Storage Server WebUI. Version information can be obtained:

•In the WebUI by clicking the Status tab. This displays a System Information screen containing version

information.

•On the HP NAS Updater utility screen.

NOTE:

Service Release 5.6 must be installed prior to installing Service Release 6.2.

Service Release 6.2 installation

Issue: Version control agent CP005770 cannot be installed on several NAS server models

Description Service Release 6.2 fails to install CP005770 on several models of HP ProLiant

Storage Server.

Storage Server with Windows Storage Server 2003 SP1 release notes 5

Service Release 6.2 installation

Workaround This issue has been found on NAS servers with SmartStart 7.1 and SmartStart 7.2.

Go to the Add or Remove Programs applet and uninstall the older Version Control

Agent, restart the Service Release 6.2 setup, and then select Smart Component

CP005770 for installation.

Issue: Minimum disk space requirement for Service Release 6.2 installation

Description The HP ProLiant Storage Server should have at least 1 GB of available space on

the system drive when installing the Service Release. The specificamountofdisk

space required depends on the components that are selected for installation.

Workaround There is no workaround, other than ensuring that the system drive where the Service

Release setup is installed has more than 1 GB of available disk space. To free

up disk space, unnecessary files can be deleted from the C:\temp folder. This

situation can also be avoided by ensuring that only the necessary components are

selected for installation when the Service Release setup is run.

Issue: Microsoft hotfix KB894537 cannot be installed on servers with SFU v3.5

Description Microsoft hotfix KB894537 cannot installed on servers with Services for Unix v3.5.

Workaround Microsoft hotfixes KB895398 and Q897078 are prerequisites and should be

selected and installed while installing KB894537. These hotfixes are listed in the

Service Release 6.2 Microsoft hotfix feature tree.

Issue: User intervention required during installation of SMS v2.01 on HP ProLiant DL100 G2 servers

with the IMB v3.0 driver

Description During installation of the Server Management System v2.01 on DL100 G2 servers,

the IMB v3.0 driver sometimes displays a security warning stating the driver does

not have digital signature.

Workaround AcceptingthewarningmessagebyclickingContinue proceeds with the installation

without any issues.

Issue: Running the Service Release 6.2 setup using a network share results in an Open File—Security

Warning message

Description When redirecting the NAS Updater utility to a network drive or share with Service

Release 6.2, the Windows Open File—Security Warning is displayed.

Workaround Select Run to allow the installation process to continue. This message may display

more than once.

Issue: PSP Smart Components remain checked even though the components were installed

Description Some ProLiant Support Pack (PSP) Smart Components remain checked for selection

in the Feature Selection screen when the Service Release 6.2 NAS Updater

installation is re-run after a previous installation. This issue is caused by the

necessary hardware required for the PSP components not being present on the

server.

Workaround There is no workaround. Having the PSP Smart Components checked does not

have any affect on their installation in this situation. This can be verified from the

PSP Smart Component log file located at C:\CPQSYSTEM\log\cpqsetup.log.

Issue: Intel NIC driver installation fails when installed over a network share

Service Release 6.2 installation

Description The installation of Intel network interface card driver fails when attempted over

anetworkshare.

Workaround Perform the installation directly from the Service Release DVD or by copying the

DVD contents to a local drive on the storage server.

Issue: Install Shield Error 1607/1628 during Service Release installation

Description Installation error 1607: Unable to install Install Shield

Scripting Runtime and/or 1628: failed to complete

installation may be reported during installation of the Service Release. This

error can occur for various reasons, the most prevalent being a driver did not

exit properly when the Service Release is run the first time. This issue is currently

under investigation.

Workaround Run the Service Release again after ensuring that no instances of the processes

named msiexec.exe,setup.exe,oridriver.exe are running.

Issue: Storage server fails to reboot when KB840141 and Remote Storage Windows component are

both installed

Description The storage server fails to reboot when Microsoft hotfix KB840141 and the Remote

Storage Windows component are both installed on the system. This problem is

currently under investigation.

Workaround Ensure that hotfix KB896718 (KB840141 is bundled as part of KB96718) is not

selected for installation during the Service Release setup if the Remote Storage

Windows component is already installed on the storage server. If hotfix KB840141

is already installed on the storage server, do not add the Remote Storage Windows

component to the system through the Microsoft Add or Remove Programs applet.

Issue: The NAS Updater utility installed with Service Release 5.6 cannot be used for installing Service

Release 6.2 components

Description The NAS Updater utility installed with Service Release 5.6 cannot be used to

launch the Service Release 6.2. Attempting to install Service Release 6.2 with the

older utility results in the error message Version of NAS Updater on this

system does not support SR6.2 installation. Please install

latest version of NAS Updater.

Workaround Install the NAS Updater utility bundled with Service Release 6.2 by using the

setup.exe file located at the root level of the DVD.

Issue: Text does not get resized properly with the NAS Updater utility

Description When the graphics settings are changed on a NAS server while running the

update application, the update application text does not get resized.

Workaround Close and restart the update application.

Storage Server with Windows Storage Server 2003 SP1 release notes 7

Service Release 6.2 installation

Issue: Service Release installation log information

Description The Service Release creates an installation log that may be difficult to locate and

interpret. Successive installation entries are appended at the end of the log file. In

addition to the Service Release installation log, there are supplemental installation

logs for reference. The locations of the log files are listed below.

•Service Release log file: c:\hpnas\SR\ServiceRelease.log

•ProLiant Smart Components (CPxxxxxx): c:\CPQSYSTEM\

log\cpqsetup.log

Note: Some ProLiant 100 series storage servers may not have this log file.

•Microsoft updates and hotfixes: c:\Windows\KBxxxxxx.log

Workaround The following information is provided to help interpret entries in the Service

Release installation log.

General system information logged prior to installation

[Information] [21\9\2006 11:35:46]: =====SR6.2 Log Information=====

[Information] Installation Detail for cp006489.exe [21\9\2006 11:37:55]: The

operation completed successfully.

NOTE:

The 1 or 0 at the end of the “test for file availability” message indicates

whether the file is available at the said location (1= ‘file is available’ and

0=‘file does not exist’).

For Microsoft updates, there may be a blank entry displayed in the log

entry. A blank entry is associated with a successful installation. For

example, [Information] Installation Detail for KB901214.exe

[21\9\2006 11:39:25]:

The following messages may appear for installation results:

•The system cannot find the file specified.

•Incorrect function.

•The network location cannot be reached. For information about network

troubleshooting, see Windows Help.

•The network path was not found.

These messages may indicate the installation of the component did not occur.

Three troubleshooting actions are:

1. Review the Service Release Readme file.

2. Check the supplemental installation logs corresponding with the component (if

aCPorKBtypecomponent).

3. Attempt installing the individual component located in either the HP or

Microsoft directory on the Service Release DVD.

Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1

This section describes issues that involve the installation and uninstallation of Microsoft Windows Server

2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1).

Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1

Issue: Blue screen condition occurs on NAS servers if Windows Server 2003 SP1 is uninstalled

Description If Microsoft Windows Server 2003 SP1 is uninstalled from NAS servers, a

blue screen condition occurs when the server is restarted again after the SP1

uninstallation.

Workaround Microsoft Windows Server 2003 SP1 is mandatory for HP NAS servers. HP

highly recommends that SP1 not be uninstalled.

Issue: Service Release 5.5 reference to PSP 7.2A and SP1 support clarification

Description There is confusion about Microsoft Windows Server 2003 SP1 support between

PSP 7.2A in Service Release 5.5 for ProLiant storage servers and PSP 7.3 offered

for ProLiant servers.

Workaround PSP 7.2A includes applicable PSP 7.3 updates that allows Service Release 5.5 to

support the installation of Windows Server 2003 SP1.

Issue: Telnet service missing after SP1 installation

Description On all HP ProLiant Storage Server and StorageWorks NAS models, the Telnet

service can get uninstalled after installing Microsoft Server 2003 Service Pack 1.

The uninstallation of the Telnet service is caused by a system name of 15 or more

characters, and the service is not listed in Service Control Manager. Once the

Telnet service is uninstalled, it cannot be reinstalled.

Workaround Use a system name of 14 characters or less before installing Service Pack 1 so

as to not uninstall the service.

Issue: Quest Consolidator 5.0 installation fails when installed on systems with Microsoft Windows

Server 2003 Service Pack 1

Description Installation of Quest Consolidator 5.0 on storage server systems that have

Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 installed fails with the

messages Couldn’t start service and One or more of the Quest

Consolidator services was not configured properly. Please

open the Service Control Manager to configure the services

manually. This is caused by an incompatibility of the application with Microsoft

Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1.

Workaround See the link http://questsupportlink.quest.com/eSupport/

Solution.asp?WAid=268453148.

Issue: The Emulex HBAnyware utility fails to install on systems with Microsoft Windows Server 2003

Service Pack 1

Description Attempts to install the Emulex HBAnyware utility, after installing Microsoft

Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 from the Service Release, fails with the

message Error 1931. The Windows Installer service cannot

update the system file C:\WINDOWS\system32\hbaapi.dll

because the file is protected by Windows. You may need

to update your operating system for this program to

work correctly. Package version: 2.0.4.0, OS Protected

versions:. This issue occurs because Service Pack 1 updates the component

hbaapi.dll, replacing the same Emulex file.

Storage Server with Windows Storage Server 2003 SP1 release notes 9

Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1

Workaround For Emulex support on Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1

and other details on this issue, see the site http://oak.emulex.com/fcsskb/

findsol2.asp?solution=17906.

Issue: The DFS service is stopped after SP1 installation

Description After installing the Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 from the

Service Release, the DFS service stops. As a result, the DFS shares are not

accessible. Also, creating the DFS root or DFS links fails.

Workaround Using a Remote Desktop session on the storage server, select Start > Settings >

Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services, and do the following:

1. Right-click Distributed File System and click Properties.

2. Change the Startup type in General Tab to Automatic.

3. Start the service.

Issue: The AdaptecStorageManagerAgent service hangs or terminates unexpectedly after installing

Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1

Description On storage servers with an Adaptec RAID controller card, the

AdaptecStorageManagerAgent service fails to start automatically after the

Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 installation. This issue is currently

under investigation.

Workaround Restart the AdaptecStorageManagerAgent service manually from the Service

Control Manager window.

Issue: Windows Update/Automatic Update is disabled after uninstalling Microsoft Windows Server

2003 Service Pack 1

Description After enabling the Windows Update/Automatic Update from the Service Release

feature on certain ProLiant Storage Servers, the Windows Update/Automatic

Update can get disabled if Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1

is uninstalled.

NOTE:

HP does not recommend and Microsoft does not support uninstalling Service

Pack 1.

Workaround Run the Service Release setup again and install the Enable Windows

Update/Automatic Update feature.

Issue: Group Policy editor (gpedit.msc) is unusable after uninstalling Microsoft Window 2003

Service Pack 1

Description When you try to modify or view Group Policy objects (GPOs) after installing

Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1, you can receive an error message similar

to The following entry in the [strings] section is too long

and has been truncated.

Some text can be displayed after this error message, and this text varies in

different scenarios. Additionally, if you click OK in the message window, a similar

error message can be repeated. Each error message that is repeated has different

text that is displayed after the error message.

Workaround The problem is addressed in the Microsoft Knowledge Base article KB842933:

The following entry in the [strings] section is too long and has been

truncated error message, when you try to modify or to view GPOs in

Windows Server 2003, Windows XP Professional, or Windows 2000. The

resolution for the problem is available on the Microsoft Support web site

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=842933.
