Upgrading a VA 7100/7400

to a VA 7410/7110

This document describes the steps involved in upgrading a VA 7100 or

VA 7400 array to a VA 7410 or VA 7110 array. This procedure should only

be performed by HP service trained personnel.

Caution All upgrades to a VA 7410/7110 require a full back up of all

data. The array is reformatted during the upgrade, which will

destroy all data on the array. It is the customer’s responsibility to

ensure that all data on the array is backed up before the

upgrade is performed.

The upgrade procedure involves the following steps:

1 Backup all data on the array.

2 Gather array configuration information.

3 Upgrade disk firmware if necessary.

4 Power down the array.

5 Upgrade the array hardware.

6 Configure the upgraded array.

7 Create the LUN configuration.

8 Use previously saved data to recreate the host port behavior table and the

Secure Manager table.

9 Restore all data to the array.

Planning the Upgrade

Here are some things to consider when planning the upgrade:

■Changing the physical configuration - because the entire array must be

powered off to perform the upgrade, this is an ideal time to move or

rearrange the array hardware components. This may be necessary if

additional disk enclosures are being added as part of the upgrade.

Note The remaining items apply to the VA 7410 only.

■Capacity requirements - the VA 7410 requires more disk capacity for

image disks. This additional capacity must be available on the array. If a

VA 7100 is being upgraded, the impact on available capacity may be

substantial because of the two redundancy groups used on the VA 7410.

Before upgrading a VA 7100, a careful assessment should be made of

how much additional capacity will be required on the array to create the

desired LUN configuration.

■LUN configuration - when upgrading a VA 7400, the impact on the LUN

configuration will be minimal because the VA 7410 and VA 7400 both use

two redundancy groups. Upgrading a VA 7100 will have more impact

because the array is moving from one redundancy group to two. The LUN

Upgrading a VA 7100/7400 to a VA 7410/7110 3

configuration will have to be modified to take advantage if the

performance benefits offered by the VA 7410.

■Host connectivity - the VA 7410 provides additional FC ports for host

connectivity. Make sure the environment has the capacity to accommodate

the additional connections.

Preparing for the Upgrade

Gather the Required Hardware Components

The following hardware components are required when upgrading the array.

Before beginning the upgrade, make sure all necessary components are

available. The parts involved in the upgrade will vary depending on the

magnitude of the upgrade.

Note Use the product number when ordering parts for the upgrade.

Do not use replacement or exchange parts for performing the

upgrade.

Replacing Fibre Channel Cables When Upgrading a VA 7100

The VA 7100 uses large form factor SC Fibre Channel cables. When

upgrading to a VA 7110/7410, it will be necessary to replace these cables

with small form factor LC cables. Refer to Table 21 in the

HP StorageWorks

Virtual Array User and Service Guide

for a list of supported LC cables.

Checking for VA 7410/7110 Updates

Check the current VA 7410/7110 service notes for information on any product

updates. This includes firmware releases and other updates. This information

Backup All Data on the Array

A complete backup of all data should be performed on the array that is being

upgraded. The upgrade process involves formatting the array, which will

destroy all data. It is the customer’s responsibility to backup all data on the

array.

Determine if Consulting Services May Be Needed

Consulting services are available for optimizing the use and performance of

the VA 7410/7110. Because of the additional features offered by the

VA 7410/7110, the customer may be interested in purchasing some of these

services. If the customer is unfamiliar with the services available, direct them to

the following web site for more information:

http://www.hp.com/hps/tech/storage/

Gather Array Configuration Information

If the existing array configuration will be recreated on the upgraded array, all

important array configuration information should be saved. This will facilitate

re-establishing the correct configuration on the upgraded array. If a new

configuration will be established, you may not need to save and reuse all of

the array configuration.

Note The commands used to retrieve and save the configuration

information redirect the output to the specified file. After

executing a command, view the file and make sure the content

looks correct before proceeding to the next command. The file

names used are suggestions. Any meaningful file names can be

used.

Because the array will be formatted, do not store the

configuration files on a LUN on the array.

6 Upgrading a VA 7100/7400 to a VA 7410/7110

1 Save the state of the array:

armdsp <array_id> > armdsp_<array_id>

armdsp -a <array_id> > armdsp_a_<array_id>

2 Save a list of any feature licenses that are installed:

armfeature -r <array_id> > armfeature_<array_id>

3 If the host port behavior table is being used, save the table:

armhost -r -f armhost_<array_id>.txt <array_id>

4 If the Secure Manager LUN security table is being used, save the table:

armsecure -r -f armsecure_<array_id>.txt -p password

<array_id>

Upgrade Disk Firmware

The VA 7410/7110 uses a 2 Gbit back-end. All disks that will be used in the

upgraded array must have firmware that supports the 2 Gbit transfer speed.

The upgrading of disk firmware is described in a Service Note available on the

following internal HP web site:

http://snserver.mayfield.hp.com/products/A6183A/

Power Off the Array

When upgrading to a VA 7410/7110, it is best to avoid an image disk

conflict. This occurs when the VA 7410/7110 controllers find a valid image

from a VA 7100 or VA 7400 during power on. Because the images are

incompatible, an abterm error will occur if a valid image disk is found.

To avoid this situation, the array enclosure must be powered off without

performing a shutdown. This ensures that the image disks on the array are

invalid. When the VA 7410/7110 controllers are powered on, they will not

find a valid image and an image conflict (and the resulting abterm) will not

occur.

1 Simultaneously disconnect both power cords from the array controller

enclosure.

2 Set the array controller enclosure power/standby switch to the OFF

position.

3 Power down any disk enclosures.

Upgrading a VA 7100/7400 to a VA 7410/7110 7

Upgrading the Array Hardware

Upgrading the original array to a VA 7410/7110 involves replacing

controllers and LCCs on the original array. The procedure may also involve

adding new disk enclosures if the array capacity is being increased.

Note Make sure you have a copy of the

HP StorageWorks Virtual

Array User and Service Guide

available. The detailed steps for

the procedures involved are covered in this book and are not

duplicated here.

Disconnect Fiber Cabling

1 Disconnect all fiber cabling from the array enclosure.

2 Disconnect all fiber cabling from the disk enclosures on a VA 7400.

Replace the Array Controllers

The controllers in the array enclosure must be replaced with VA 7410 or

VA 7110 controllers.

Note Before replacing the controllers, check the BATTERY LED on each

VA 7410/7110 controller to ensure the LED is off. If the LED is

flashing, it indicates that the battery is supplying power to the

NVSRAM. If the LED is flashing, remove the battery from the

controller, wait a few seconds, and reinstall it. This will ensure

that the NVSRAM contents are cleared.

1 Remove both controllers from the array enclosure.

2 If the cache DIMMs will be used on the VA 7410/7110 array, remove the

DIMMs from the controllers.

Note 256 MB DIMMs are not supported on the VA 7410/7110.

3 Install cache DIMMs on the VA 7410/7110 controllers. The minimum

cache configuration for the VA 7410/7110 is 1024 MB per controller (two

512 MB DIMMS or a single 1024 MB DIMM).

4 Install the VA 7410/7110 controllers in the array enclosure.

8 Upgrading a VA 7100/7400 to a VA 7410/7110

Replace the Disk Enclosure LCCs

If the original VA 7400 array included DS 2400 disk enclosures, the LCCs must

be replaced with DS 2405 LCCs.

1 Remove both LCCs from the disk enclosure.

2 Install the DS 2405 LCCs in the disk enclosure.

Set FC Loop Speed Switch (Upgrading a VA 7400 with DS 2405 Disk

Systems)

When upgrading a VA 7400 that includes DS 2405 Disk Systems, the FC Loop

Speed switch on the disk enclosure LCCs must be set to 2GB/s. Failure to set

the switch on both LCCs in each disk enclosure will disrupt the FC loop and

cause the entire array to malfunction.

Install New Disk Enclosures

If the capacity of the array will be increased by adding additional disk

enclosures, they should be added now.

Upgrading a VA 7100/7400 to a VA 7410/7110 9

Configuring the Upgraded VA 7410/7110 Array

The process of configuring the upgraded VA 7110/7410 is the same process

used for installing a new array. Go to the

HP StorageWorks Virtual Array

Installation Guide

and perform step 3 through step 19. Any differences in the

steps when performing the upgrade are identified below.

Note The step numbers in this section refer to the corresponding step

numbers in the

HP StorageWorks Virtual Array Installation

Guide.

Step 6. Power-on the array controller enclosure

Because the array does not detect any valid image disks, the array status will

be No Maps. Format the array to create the maps using the following

command:

vfpfmt

Note Make sure that the disk enclosures are not connected to the

array controller enclosure and operating when performing the

format. This will ensure that the image disks selected for the

array will be in the controller enclosure.

Handling an abterm 70.3.2

If the array detects a valid image disk from the original array, a looping

abterm 70.3.2 will occur due to the incompatible disk image. To clear the

error, perform the following steps:

1 Power off the array enclosure.

2 Disconnect all disks from the backplane by sliding them out of the

enclosure one inch.

3 Power on the array enclosure. The array status should be Not Enough

Disks.

4 Install the disks back into the controller enclosure.

5 Format the array to create the image disks:

vfpfmt

The array status should now be Ready and you can proceed with step 7.

10 Upgrading a VA 7100/7400 to a VA 7410/7110

Step 12. Format the array controller enclosure

Skip this step because the array has already been formatted.

Step 19. Build the Host Port Behavior Table

The host port behavior table is stored on the array mid-plane and it should not

be necessary to recreate the table. However, it is recommended that you read

the table from the array and check it to make sure it contains the proper

entries. Use the following command to read the table to the file identified by

filename:

armhost -r -f filename array-id

Step 21. Build the Secure Manager LUN Security Table

If the Secure Manager LUN security table was saved from the original array,

use the configuration information to restore the LUN security table. Use the

following command to write the LUN security table to the array from the file

saved earlier:

armsecure -w -f armsecure_<array_id>.txt -p password

<array_id>

Restore Array Data

After the LUN configuration has been restored, the data can be restored from

the backup medium.
