Direct Connect support

This release supports Direct Connect connectivity in clustered and nonclustered environments.

Operating system Direct Connect support?

Windows 2000 Yes

Windows 2003 32 bit Yes1

Windows 2003 x64 Yes1

Windows 2003 IA64 Yes

1Some HBAs do not support Direct Connect. See your HP representative for specific information.

Switch support

This release supports the Fibre Channel (FC) switches and firmware versions listed in the HP StorageWorks

SAN design reference guide, which you can download from the HP StorageWorks web site:

http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/storageworks/san/documentation.html

NOTE:

HP recommends that you

not

mixswitchfirmwareversionsinaSAN.Itisabestpracticetouniformly

upgrade all switches in the SAN.

Multiple-path support

A Windows system with EVA4000/6000/8000 storage requires the installation of HP StorageWorks

multipathing software on each host to achieve high-availability, multipath capability.

Server support

Windows supports ProLiant servers, including Blade Servers and HP Integrity Servers.

Operating constraints

For information about operating constraints for the EVA4000/6000/8000 hardware and HP

StorageWorks Command View EVA, see their release notes.

SAN boot procedures

Booting from the SAN is supported for Windows 2000 and Windows 2003 for multipath configurations.

SAN boot procedures are available on the following HP web site:

http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/storageworks/san/documentation.html

Failover/failback

Failback preference settings for the HSV controllers are specific to the operating system. See the HP

StorageWorks Windows connectivity for the Enterprise Virtual Array installation and reference guide

for more information.

Storage System Scripting Utility for EVA

Thelatestv

ersion of the Storage System Scripting Utility (SSSU) is available on the HP storage web site:

http://h18006.www1.hp.com/products/storage/software/cmdvieweva/index.html

Recommendations

This section contains HP recommendations to ensure proper operation of the EVA4000/6000/8000

storage system.

Codeload usage

When a system with a maximum configuration is running at full capacity, it may experience a time-out

condition before codeload is complete. HP recommends that you always upgrade multipathing software

at an off-peak time.

Disk resource Pending Timeout for large configurations

To ensure continuous operation of disk resources across the SAN with disk resource counts greater

than 8, HP recommends that you increase the Pending Timeout value for each disk resource from

180secondsto360seconds.

To set the Pending Timeout value:

1. Open the Microsoft Cluster Administrator.

2. Select a Disk Group resource in the left pane.

3. One at a time, right-click each Disk Resource in the right pane and select Properties.

4. Click the Advanced tab.

5. Change the Pending Timeout value to 360.

6. Click OK.

4000/6000/8000 Enterprise Virtual Array connectivity 5.1A for Windows release notes 9

Host server considerations

This section provides important information about the host servers.

Windows 2000 and Windows Server 2003

Drive-letter remapping can occur in the following situations and can affect data access:

•Replacing one server with another

•Replacing a Fibre Channel adapter in a server

During a server or adapter replacement, use Disk Manager to manually remap drives to drive letters.

This restores access to your data.

When you replace a Fibre Channel adapter in a server, you must reinstall the HBA driver. Windows

2000 and Windows Server 2003 automatically reload the original driver, reset registry settings, and

create new connections on the HSV controller. Assign the new World Wide Names (WWNs) to the

appropriate server.

Registry growthinWindows

The Windows plug-and-play architecture limits the number of plug-and-play devices that you can add or

remove from the registry. When you add or remove devices, or create snapshots, the plug-and-play

manager adds entries to the registry.

If the registry contains more than 700 entries, the next time the system reboots, the following error

message is displayed: Failed to load Windows 2000 due to a file missing or

corrupt in the \WINNT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM directory.

SeeMicrosoftKnowledgeBasearticle(269075)formoreinformationaboutregistrygrowth.

Known limitations for large LUNs in Windows 2000

In Windows 2000, if you remove a logical unit number (LUN) greater than 7, and then perform a disk

scan, the Found New Hardware wizard may ask you to finish installing the device that was removed.

The Device Manager may display the device with a yellow warning icon. Reboot the system to remove

the device.

Windows 2000 dynamic disk snapshots and snapclones

Windows 2000 does not support the use of snapshots or snapclones in HP SANs if you present the

snapshot or snapclone to the same Windows 2000 host as the LUN from which it was created. Snapshot

and snapclone are features of the HSG80 and HSV controller-based HP storage systems. All dynamic

disks on a system have information in their metadata about the other dynamic disks that exist on the

system. When Windows encounters two dynamic disks with the same information, it cannot resolve

the conflict.
