Opening the server

CAUTION: You must power down the server and then

disconnect the power cords before removing or replacing

non-hot-pluggable hard disk drives, DIMMs, or

processors.

If necessary, unlock the server with the supplied key.

Installing hard drives

This system can support SATA and SAS drives in non-hot-plug and

hot-plug hard disk drive cages.

For detailed drive cabling information, see the server hood label.

Installing optical drives

The lower two half-height media bays are shipped with drive bay

shields. Remove a shield by pulling it away from the front of the

chassis.

Installing memory

Memory installation guidelines are as follows:

•Use registered and unbuffered DDR3 ECC DIMM.

•Install DIMMs in identical pairs for best performance.

•A single DIMM can be installed in DIMM slot 2A.

To access DIMM slots, remove the air baffle as shown in Figure 5.

CAUTION: To prevent damage to DIMMs, use an

antistatic wrist strap and grounding mat, and discharge

static electricity before touching DIMMs.

If a DIMM does not fit completely or easily into the socket, remove

the DIMM, reverse the orientation, and then reinsert it.

Figure 12 Installing a DIMM

Installing a processor

For a two-processor system, both processors must be of the same

type. To access the processor sockets, remove the air baffle as

shown previously.

CAUTION: Failure to completely open the processor

locking lever prevents the processor from seating during

installation, leading to hardware damage.

1. Open the processor locking lever and the bracket. Do not

remove the processor socket cover.

Figure 13 Opening the lever and bracket

IMPORTANT: Be sure the processor remains inside the

processor installation tool.

2. If the processor has separated from the installation tool,

carefully reinsert the processor in the tool. Handle the

processor by the edges only, and do not touch the bottom of

the processor, especially the contact area.

Figure 14 Reinserting the processor

3. Align the processor installation tool with the socket, and then

install the processor. THE PINS ON THE SYSTEM BOARD ARE

VERY FRAGILE AND EASILY DAMAGED.

Figure 15 Installing the processor

CAUTION: THE PINS ON THE SYSTEM BOARD ARE VERY

FRAGILE AND EASILY DAMAGED. To avoid damage to

the system board:

•Never install or remove a processor without using the

processor installation tool.

•Do not touch the processor socket contacts.

•Do not tilt or slide the processor when lowering the

processor into the socket.

4. Press the tabs on the processor installation tool to separate it

from the processor, and then remove the tool.

Figure 16 Removing the tool

5. Close the processor socket retaining bracket and the processor

locking lever. The processor socket cover is automatically

ejected. Remove the cover.

Figure 17 Closing the bracket and lever, removing the cover

CAUTION: Be sure to close the processor socket

retaining bracket before closing the processor locking

lever. The lever should close without resistance. Forcing

the lever closed can damage the processor and socket,

requiring system board replacement.

6. Install the heatsink.

Figure 18 Installing the heatsink

NOTE: Ensure that the air flow arrow on top of the

heatsink is pointing towards the rear of the chassis.
