Whatisaroomthermostat?
Aroomthermostat simply switches the heating systemon and off
as necessary. It works by sensing the air temperature, switching
on theheating when the air temperaturefalls belowthe thermostat
setting, and switching it offoncethis set temperature has been
reached.
Turning aroomthermostat toahigher setting will not make the
room heat up anyfaster.Howquickly the room heats updepends
on thedesign of the heating system, forexample, the size of the
boiler and radiators.
Neitherdoes the setting effect how quickly the rooms cools down.
Turning aroomthermostat toalower setting will result in the room
being controlled atalower temperature,and savesenergy.
The heating systemwill notwork if atime switchor programmer
has switched it off.
The way to set and use yourroom thermostat is to findthe lowest
temperature setting that youare comfortablewith and then leave it
alone to do itsjob. The best way to dothis is to set the room
thermostat to alow temperature -say 18ºC- and turn it up by 1ºC
2
each day until you are comfortable with the temperature. You wont
have to adjust the thermostatfurther.Anyadjustment above this
setting will waste energyand costyou more money.
Ifyour heating system is aboiler with radiators, there will usually be
only one roomthermostat tocontrol thewhole house. But you can
have different temperaturesin individual rooms byinstalling
thermostatic radiator valves(TRV’s)on individual radiators. If you
don'thave TRVs you should choose atemperature that is
reasonable for the wholehouse. If you do haveTRVsyou can
choose aslightly highersetting to make sure that even thecoldest
room is comfortable, then prevent any overheating in other rooms
byadjustingthe TRVs.
Room thermostatsneedafree flowof air to sense the temperature,
sothey mustnot be covered by curtainsor blockedby furniture.
Nearby electric fires, televisions, wall or table lamps may prevent
thethermostat fromworkingproperly.

Whatisaprogrammableroomthermostat?
Aprogrammable room thermostat is both aprogrammer and a room
thermostat. Aprogrammer allows you toset On and"Offtime peri-
ods to suit your own lifestyle. Aroom thermostat works by sensing
theair temperature, switching on the heating when the airtempera-
ture falls below the thermostat setting, and switching it offonce this
set temperature has been reached.
So, aprogrammable room thermostat lets youchoose what times
you want theheating to be on, and what temperature it should
reach while it is on. It will allow youto selectdifferent temperatures
inyour homeat different times of the day (and days of the week) to
meet your particular needs.
Turning a programmable roomthermostat to ahigher setting will not
make the room heat upany faster. How quickly the roomheatsup
depends on the design ofthe heatingsystem, for example, the size
ofthe boiler and radiators.
Neither doesthe settingeffect how quickly the room cools down.
Turning a programmable roomthermostat to alower setting will
result in theroom beingcontrolledat alower temperature, and
saves energy.
The way to set and useyour programmable room thermostatis to
find the lowest temperature settingsthat you are comfortable with
and the differenttimes you have chosenand then leave it aloneto
doits job.
The best wayto do thisis to set lowtemperatures first, say 18ºC,
and then turnthem up byone degreeeach dayuntil you are
comfortable with the temperatures. Youwont haveto adjust the
thermostat further.Any adjustment abovethese setting will waste
energy and cost you more money.
Ifyour heating system is aboiler with radiators, there will usually be
only one programmableroom thermostat to controlthe whole
house. But you can havedifferent temperatures inindividual rooms
byinstalling thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs)on individual
radiators. If you don't have TRVs, you should chooseatemperature
that is reasonable for thewhole house. If you do have TRVs, you
can choose a slightly higher settingto make sure that even the
coldest roomis comfortable, then prevent any overheating in other
rooms by adjusting the TRVs.
The time onthe programmer mustbe correct. Some types have to
beadjusted in spring andAutumn atthe changebetween
Greenwich Mean Timeand BritishSummer Time.
5
You maybe able to temporarilyadjust theheating programme, for
example “Override”, “Advance” or“Boost” Theseare explained in
themanufacturers instructions.
Programmable room thermostatsneed afreeflow of airto sense
thetemperature, so theymust notbe coveredby curtains or blocked
byfurniture.Nearby electric fires, televisions, wall or table lamps
may preventthe thermostat from working properly.
