Functional Description
Features
The BTM-AR2-001 module provides dual position outputs when used in conjunction with Balluff Micropulse
linear position transducers with a digital Start/Stop output. The BTM-AR2-001 provides both analog -10 to
+10Vdc and pulse width modulated (PWM) position output signals. The BTM-AR2-001 module is user-
programmable to meet a wide variety of application requirements.
The BTM AR2-001 interface module and Micropulse linear position transducers feature:
• Rugged design provides immunity to high shock and vibration, contamination and electrical noise
• Wear and maintenance-free non-contact technology
• LCD display provides easy setup and position readout
• Absolute output signals
• Analog output with 16-bit resolution, PWM output with 5µm resolution
• User programmable scaled position outputs
• Permissible cable length between transducer and module up to 1,600 feet

Note:
The included mounting plate adapter can be used to adapt the BTM-AR2-001 Interface Module to non-
standard mounting surfaces.
If the mounting plate adapter is not required, it may be discarded.

To access the programming buttons and LCD display, remove 4 cover
screws and open the hinged cover.
Upon initial power up of the module, the display shows:
Version 1.xx subject to change without notice
The next screen shows the status of the transducer:
If no magnet is detected, the display will show No Transducer
Detected and the red error LED will be on.
Once the module has been powered and completed self testing, the
screen will look similar to the screen at right. Also, if the module and
transducer are working properly, both the green program LED and
the red error LED will be off.
Setup Instructions
Factory Default Settings
To enter the Configure Mode, press the <PGM + DOWN> keys simultaneously for at least 3 seconds.
Configure Mode allows the user to adjust the following parameters:
Adjust LCD contrast - Press the <UP> or <DOWN> keys repeatedly to adjust
display contrast. Press <PGM> to continue to the next parameter.
Set Display Units - For the LCD to display raw position values in Hexadecimal
(HEX), press the <UP> key for System Units. For the LCD to display raw posi-
tion in Decimal, press the <DOWN> key for Normal. Press the <PGM> key to
exit Configure Mode, and return to Run Mode.

To enter the Programming Mode, press the <PGM + UP> keys simultaneously for at least 3 seconds.
Programming Mode allows the user to adjust the following parameters:
Set Units - The display shows the position value in either Millimeters or Inches.
For Millimeters press the <UP> key, for Inches, press the <DOWN> key. The
default value is Inches. Press <PGM> to continue to the next parameter.
Adjust Update rate - This menu allows the update rate to be set (Sampling
Rate) to either 1mSec or 2mSec. For a 1mSec update rate, press the <DOWN>
key. For a 2mSec update rate, press the <UP> key. The default value is
1mSecs. Press <PGM> to continue to the next parameter.
Adjust Gradient - Enter the gradient of the transducer. The gradient value is
found on the Balluff transducer label in “µs/in” (e.g. grad=8.8843µs/in). Initially
the gradient value is set to 9.0000 µs/in with the last digit blinking. Press the
<UP> key to increment this value to the desired setting. Press <SEL> to move
the cursor to the next digit. Press the <UP> and <DOWN> keys to adjust each
digit. Continue this process until all of the digits are set according to the gradient
value marked on the label. Press <PGM> to continue to the next parameter.

4. Adjust Nominal Stroke - This menu allows the operator to enter the Nominal
Stoke length of the transducer. This will also adjust the NULL and GAIN values
to approximate settings. Exact setting of the NULL and GAIN values will be set
during the Online Adjust Mode programming. Initially the value is set to 060.0
in, with the cursor blinking in the least significant number. Adjust this value ac-
cordingly, using the <UP> and <DOWN> keys. Press the <SEL> key to ad-
vance to the next significant number. Follow this process until the value is cor-
rectly entered. Press <PGM> to continue to the next parameter. Note - When
replacing an existing position transducer, set the nominal stroke to the same
value as that of the transducer being replaced.
5. Set PWM State - This will allow the Pulse Width Modulated output signal to be
either Active high or Active low. For Active high, press the <UP> key. For Ac-
tive low, press the <DOWN> key. The default state is Active low.Press <PGM>
to continue to the next parameter. Note - This step is not needed if only the
analog output is being used.
6. Adjust Number of Recirculations - The number of recirculations of the PWM
output signal can be set between 1 and 16, default is 01. Use the <UP> or
<DOWN> key to adjust the number to the desired value. Press <PGM> to con-
tinue to the next parameter. Note - This step is not needed if only the analog
output is being used.
7. Set Analog State - This allows the user to program the slope of the analog out-
put voltage. Press the <UP> key for Output Rising (-10 to +10Vdc) or press the
<DOWN> key for Output Falling (+10 to -10 Vdc). Rising and falling values are
based on the magnet reading starting at the Null position closest to the electron-
ics. The default setting is Output Rising.Press the <PGM> key to exit Program-
ming Mode and return to Run Mode.

Online Adjust Mode
To enter Online Adjust Mode, press the <PGM> key for at least 3 seconds. Online Adjust Mode allows
you to set the Null, Gain and PWM Offset values.
Note - Due to possible voltage drops across the cables, the Null and Gain value should also be checked
at the input of the controller with a 6 digit multi-meter for accuracy. The voltage value on the display
represents the Analog Output Voltage seen directly on the Output of connector J1, pin “D”
1. Adjust Null - Locate the magnet to the Null location, towards the housing of the
transducer. The Null value may adjusted anywhere between -10 Vdc & +10 Vdc.
Press the <UP> key to increase the Null, press the <DOWN> key to decrease the
Null. The Analog Output Voltage is updated accordingly on the display. Press
<PGM> to continue to the next parameter.
Note - If no transducer is detected on power up, the display will show 0.000 V
2. Adjust Gain - Locate the magnet to the Gain position, towards the end of the trans-
ducer rod (side that is away from the transducer housing). The Gain value may be
adjusted anywhere between -10 Vdc & +10 Vdc. Press the <UP> key to increase
the Gain, press the <DOWN> key to decrease the Gain. The Analog Output Voltage
is updated accordingly on the display. Press <PGM> to continue to the next pa-
rameter.
Note – If no transducer is detected on power up, the display will show 0.000 V
Note – It may be necessary to repeat the Online Adjust Mode steps 1 and 2 until the voltages re-
quired at the Null and Gain locations are set to desired values.
3. Adjust PWM Offset -This step allows the pulse width of the PWM output signal to
be adjusted. To setup the PWM signal, locate the magnet at the NULL location.
Pressing the <UP> key will increase the pulse width of the PWM signal, pressing the
<DOWN> key will decrease the pulse width. The PWM pulse width is updated ac-
cordingly on the display. Note - This step is not needed if only the analog output
is being used.
4. When the PWM Offset is properly set at the NULL point, press <PGM> to exit the
Online Adjust Mode and return to Run Mode.
