chargerortothePCbycablesupplied.
GeneralDescription
Themodel620isafullysubmersiblewaterqualitydataloggerdesignedforunattended
deployment.Theunitisanidealtoolforlongtermdeploymentwhereaccuracyandreliabilityare
required‐canbeusedinawidevarietyofapplicationincludingwaterways,boreholes,sea,dams
andponds.ThemachinedPVCandstainlesssteelassemblymakesthisdataloggertoughand
durable.
Theinstrumentconsistsofamulti‐sensorprobewhichhasinternalmemoryandbatteriessoitcan
bothstoredataandoutputinrealtime.Communicationtoandfromtheprobeisinhalfduplex
serialwheredataistransferredtothePCusingserialcommunicationsgivingreliable,interference
freemeasurementsandalsocommandsaresenttotheloggerusingthesameinterface.Commands
sentanddatareceivedarehandledbytheaccompanyingPCWindows®software.Thecalibration
routineisalsohandledwiththesoftware.
Themodel620comeswithstoragecontainertoprotectthesensorswhiletheinstrumentisin
storage.

DescriptionofSensors
Theprobeassemblyconsistsofthepivotingsuspensionbracket,cableconnector,probebody,top
sensorhousing,slidingsensorguardandbottomsensorhousing.Thebodyoftheprobeismadeof
PVCwithaPVCsensorguard.
Thesensorscaneasilybeaccessedbyslidingthesensorguardupandrotatingthebottomsection
oftheprobe.
Theconductivityanddissolvedoxygensensorscanberemovedforservicing.However,thewhole
unitmustbethoroughlydrybeforethesesensorsareremovedtostrictlyavoidgettingmoisterin
thesockets.Acottonbudorpapertowelcanbeusedtodrythespacesinbetweenthesensors.

TemperatureSensor
Thetemperaturesensorconsistsofapt100platinumelement,housedinastainlesssteelsheath
forrobustnessandcorrosionresistance.Thetemperaturesensorrequireslittlemaintenance,
howeverthetemperaturemeasurementisusedforcalculatingthedissolvedoxygeninmg/landfor
temperaturecorrectionoftheconductivitysensor,soitisimportantthatthetemperaturesensoris
properlycalibrated.
DissolvedOxygenSensor
DissolvedOxygenismeasuredusinganactivetypemembranecoveredsensor.Thesensoritself
consistsofsilverandleadelectrodesanda25umPTFEmembraneandisfilledwitha1.0M
potassiumhydroxide.Aconstantflowofwaterpassesthesensor,maintainedbyastirrerlocated
onthebottomsectionoftheprobe.
Whenthesilverandleadelectrodesareconnectedthroughtheexternalcircuit,electronspassfrom
theleadelectrodetothesilverelectrode.Whenoxygenispresentatthesurfaceofthesilver
electrode,itreactswithelectronstoproducehydroxylions.
Attheleadelectrodethelossofelectronsproducesleadions.Thelead'selectronscombinewith
hydroxyltoprecipitateleadhydroxideontheleadelectrode.
Therateoftransferenceofelectronsviatheexternalcircuitfromtheleadtosilverelectrodeiethat
isthecurrentflowingintheexternalcircuit,isthemeasureoftherateofcellreactionandthusthe
rateatwhichoxygenreachesthesilverelectrode.Thecurrentflowingintheexternalcircuitis
directlyrelatedtotheoxygenconcentrationinthesamplebeingmeasuredbytheelectrodes.
TheDissolvedOxygensensormayperiodicallyrequireanewmembraneandelectrolyte.Aunique
knurlednutisusedtoholdthesensormembraneinpositionwithoutoverstressingthemembrane.
Thisgiveslongtermstabilityandallowseasyreplacement.Thesensorcanberemovedfromthe
probeforservicing.Areplacementprobeisreadyforuseimmediatelyafterinstallationand
calibration.
ConductivitySensor
Theconductivityismeasuredusinga4electrodebridge.Thefourelectrodesystemusesautomatic
compensationtoovercomeanybuildupofcontaminationontheelectrodes.Theelectrodesare
madefromfineplatinumandarecoatedwithplatinumblacktoenhancethelongtermstabilityand
sensitivityofthesensor.Thecoatingshouldlastforalongperiodoftimeifitisnotmechanically
removed,however,thecoatingcanbereplacedbyreturningthesensortoYEO‐KALElectronicsPty
Ltd.
TurbiditySensor
Theturbiditysensorislocatedintheholewhichrunsthroughthebottomsectionoftheprobeand
islinedwithaglasstube.Turbidityismeasuredbythenephelometricmethodwhichusesalight
sourceandadetectormeasuringthelightscatteredat90degreestotheincidentlightbeam.A
pulsedinfra‐redlightsourceisused.ATurbidityscreenhasalsobeeninstalledwhichhasapertures
toreducebounceofftheglasswallandremoverefractionfromsampleshighdensity(seawater).
