1. General Information
1.1 Overview
This controller has been optimized for a typical installation on a yacht or motorhome.
Regular MPPT controllers will need several solar panels to be put in series. But for a Yacht/RV the space
is limited, a big size array will not be possible to squeeze in. Resulting in the old style MPPT being sub-
optimal when it is connected to a limited number of solar panels (or a single one).
Next problem: Many of the old style MPPT controllers will require perfect sunshine before engaging the
rst charge step.
Another viewpoint of the problem: Old style MPPT controllers will not cope very well with partial shadows
on a Yacht/RV solar panel installation.
SUNBEAMsystem is a Swedish company and we surely know a thing or two about a hidden sun. This
is why we made the MoonRay controller series.
A MoonRay controller will start a slight charge even in cloudy weather and will charge in many more
cases of partial shadowing. Thus, not wasting any moment to collect energy, and prolonging the daily
charging periods. Also, the user with many panels will appreciate the prolonged solar panel life (as a
result of parallel instead of serial connection setup).
The extremely low self-consumption is another proof of a design intended not to let anything go to waste.
Less than 12mA of self-consumption is industry leading and similar to smaller non-MPPT controllers.
MoonRay is both electrical emissions (radio interference) certied and certied by its outstanding
electrical safety functions.

2.1 General Installation Notes
• Please read the entire installation instructions to get familiar with the installation steps
before installation.
• Loose power connections and corroded wires may result in high heat that can melt wire
insulation, burn surrounding materials, or even cause re. Ensure tight connections and use
cable clamps to secure cables and prevent them from swaying in mobile applications.

2.2 Multiple Equipment Requirements
Serial or parallel connection of PV modules
Our strong recommendation is to connect multiple panels in parallel, hence enjoying a much safer and
more robust installation. On top of that, if you use modern solar panels (like SUNBEAMsystem) the
output will be better in partial shading conditions compared to connecting the solar panels in series.
Besides that, the installation becomes simple when doing a parallel connection. All + cables to the
+terminal, and all –cables to the -terminal on the controller.
If the total amount of solar panel wattage (usually indicated on the back as Wp) exceeds the maximum
allowed wattage for your controller, then consider that you can use multiple MoonRay controllers on the
same battery. It supports stacking, or in other words connecting several controllers to the same battery
(-bank). Please use controllers of the same size.
We encourage the use of several controllers, especially when different solar panels have different angle
and/or shading conditions. This way the controllers will be able to optimize the charge individually.
For example, a theoretical solar panel pair “Left” could have the best angle (or least shade in the
morning) and pair “Right” have the best conditions during the afternoon. A setup with one controller for
each pair “Left” and “Right” would be the best performance setup.
Serial connections / 24 Volt battery system
If you have a 24 Volt battery system then you cannot avoid putting solar panels in series. Please make
sure they are protected by adequate by-pass diodes.
For most solar panels, two is the max allowed number of panels in series. The sum of the Voc (marked
on the backside of the solar panels) should be less than 45V.
Several sources of charging
MoonRay support and will sense other sources of charging, Like a mains charger or motor alternator. It
will automatically shut down when the mains charger is on but for some not fully efcient alternators it
might stay on and support it with extra charge (while sunny).
Different types of batteries
Plan to charge your household battery bank. Most often the motor starter battery will not need solar
panel charge. Remember that your starter battery will be charged while running your engine. That said,
please bear in mind that a lead acid battery will take harm if left without charge for more than a month.
For longer periods or winterizing a lead acid battery always needs a charging source.
Bank of batteries / household batteries in parallel
Battery connection may be wired to one battery or a bank of batteries. For simplicity the instructions
refer to a singular battery. The connection to a bank of batteries is analogue where the bank is acting
as one “big”single battery.

2.3 Wire Size
Battery and Load Terminal connections
Max terminal size is 4mm2/12AWG for MoonRay 160 and 6mm2/10AWG for MoonRay 320.
Wire Size
Connection between battery and controller needs to be without a voltage drop. If longer than 2m please
ensure that you use a cable bigger than the terminal size.
2.4 Installation layout planning
WARNING: Open lead acid batteries will produce hydrogen gas during charge. Batteries of
this type requires a well-ventilated area.
Safety: While working with the wiring keep the solar panels covered and the fuse in between the
controller and the battery disconnected.
Location: The controller should be attached to a wall with terminals facing downwards.
This to ensure natural thermal convection, letting air pass via the back of the controller (It is also a
requirement to ensure the IP33 dripping water protection).
Ventilation: For a proper cooling the wall should be left empty 15cm above and below the controller. If
installed in a closed box, ventilation is required.
Fuse: It is recommended to use a fuse in between the controller and the battery. The recommended
size is 15A for MoonRay160 and 30A for MoonRay320.
What is the Load port?
Normally no equipment is required to be moved from existing connections (i.e. moved from direct battery
connection). When the controller is used as a battery charger only, the Load port will not be used. The
load port is an advanced timer and/or voltage cut off controlled outlet. Load port settings is covered later
in this manual.
Grounding and electromagnetic interference
This controller is certied for its low electromagnetic (radio) interference. However, if experiencing
problems please ensure that positive and negative cables run close alongside each other. Even better if
twinned. We also recommend the installation of ferrites on all cables going out of the controller and on
the electricity feed to the radio(s). Ferrites should be tuned to the correct frequency at which interference
occur. Several turns of the cable around the ferrite is recommended.

External accessories
Remote Temperature Sensor might be used for installations where it is not possible to place the controller
in a region where the temperature is the same as the ambient temperature around the batteries. It will
improve the sensing accuracy.
Optional accessories, the Remote Display or Bluetooth Dongle should be connected via the included
network cable. If the included cable (2m) is to short any straight network cable (cat6) will be able to
replace it.
Connections overview
If set to autosense 12 or 24V battery system (default setting). The controller should be connected
to the battery before any other connections at least once. Later connect PV and nally any optional
accessories to the Load/timer terminal.
Power on by connecting the fuse in between battery and controller. Continue reading, including chapter
4 which covers charge parameter settings for advanced battery types.
