Outline

This Flexicart1) is an automatic cassette changer system that features

several VTRs and cassette shelves called “bin units.” Using the Flexicart,

efficient recording or program transmission is possible.

The Flexicart console (BFC-1) is 600 mm wide to accommodate VTRs and

bin units. You can select from several VTR formats (D-2, Betacam SP2),

S-VHS, or DVCAM).

The VCC interface (RS-232C/422A) allows you to control the Flexicart

from an external controller such as a personal computer. You can also

control the Flexicart via its parallel I/O interface.

Optional application software packages for IBM PC/AT3) compatible

personal computers are available from Sony.

The Flexicart is highly flexible cart machine that is well-suited to today’s

broadcast business.

This manual introduces the Flexicart, and explains the messages output to

its display panel.

Refer to the following Flexicart manuals, as necessary.

•Installation manual of the Flexicart (supplied with the BFC-1)

Explains how to install the Flexicart.

•Maintenance manual of the Flexicart (supplied with the BFC-1)

Explains how to maintain the Flexicart.

•User’s Guides supplied with the BZC-100/BZC-200 series flexible

cart machine software

Explain how to install and start-up the software used to control the

Flexicart from an IBM PC/AT compatible personal computer. Refer to

the on-line manuals of the software for an explanation of the routine

operations.

•Flexicart Protocol and Command Specifications (optional)

Explains the protocol for controlling the Flexicart via the VCC interface.

Major Features

The system’s major features are as follows:

System flexibility

VTR formats and numbers

The Flexicart allows you to select from D-2, Betacam SP, S-VHS, and

DVCAM formats. It can simultaneously store different VTRs as long as

their formats are the same. It also allows you to install between one and

six VTRs into one cart. However, because of their size, only three DVR-

28/18 series (D-2 format) VTRs can be installed.

Cassette sizes

The Flexicart can handle the following video cassettes using each type of

bin units1).

•D-2 format: L, M, S sizes (BKFC-8D)

•Betacam SP format: L, S sizes (BKFC-10B)

•S-VHS format: standard size (BKFC-10S)

•DVCAM format: standard size (BKFC-21DV)

A Flexicart can simultaneously store different sizes of cassettes as long as

their formats are the same.

The maximum number of cassettes that can be stored in one Flexicart

depends on the VTR format and the number of VTRs.

See the table on the next page for details.

Number of VTRs and cassettes

The table on the next page lists the VTR formats and the corresponding

maximum number of cassettes that one Flexicart can store.

Notes

•In the case of the S-VHS format, only standard cassettes are acceptable;

S-VHS compact cassettes cannot be used.

•In the case of the DVCAM format, only standard cassettes are acceptable;

DVCAM mini cassettes cannot be used.

1) Bin unit

Each bin unit provides shelves (bins) for holding

cassettes. One unit has four shelves for D-2

cassettes, seven shelves for DVCAM cassettes, and

five shelves for all other cassette types. Each bin is

four units high.

Each shelf can hold one L/M-size cassette in the center and

two S-size or S-VHS standard cassettes on the right and

left, or three DVCAM cassettes on the right, center, and

left.

Control interfaces

VCC interface

The Flexicart has a VCC interface based on the RS-232C/422A standard.

Refer to the optional Flexicart Protocol and Command Specifications for details.

Parallel I/O

The Flexicart has a 50-pin parallel I/O connector to enable control of the

Flexicart from an external controller.

Cassette management based on bar code labels

The optional bar code reader unit enables you to manage cassettes

according to their bar code labels.

Refer to the Operation Manual of the BKFC-200 Barcode Reader Unit for details

of the bar codes.

Provided application software

Six application software packages, for controlling the Flexicart from an

IBM PC/AT compatible personal computer via the VCC interface, are

available from Sony.

Application Software (for Windows* ver 3.1)

BZC-100 (Simple remote control)

The following operations can be done remotely from the personal

computer:

•cassette loading/unloading

•VTR operations such as play, stop and rewind

•crosspoint switch in the external switchers.

The BZC-100 also indicates the status of the cassettes, VTRs, and external

switchers of the Flexicart system on the computer’s display.

BZC-110 (Simple playback)

Based on a “Playlist,” where you list the order in which the cassettes are to

be played back, the Flexicart can transmit a program automatically.

This is useful for transmitting of programs and compiled commercials.

BZC-120 (Simple recording)

With a “Recordlist,” where you list the order in which programs are to be

recorded, the Flexicart records the programs onto the cassettes

automatically.

This is useful for recording a program sent via a network.

Application Software (for Windows NT* ver 3.51)

BZC-200 (Remote control)

The following operations can be done remotely from a personal computer:

•Moving cassettes between bins, and from a bin to a VTR

•VTR operations such as play, stop and rewind

•Selecting the crosspoints and monitor line of the external switchers.

The BZC-200 also displays on the computer display the status of the

cassettes, VTRs, and external switchers in the Flexicart system.

BZC-210W (Two-channel playback)

The BZC-210W allows you to specify the playback order in up to two

“Playlists.” The Playlists can then be used by the Flexicart to

automatically transmit up to four simultaneous channels of programming.

BZC-220 (Editing recording)

The BZC-220 comes with a program for editing recording lists. The edited

recording lists can then be used by the Flexicart to automatically record

programs sent over a network, programs played on another VTR, and even

live sources.

Application Example

The following figure shows an example system configuration that consists

of the Flexicart components, peripheral equipment, and the application

computer.

Example Flexicart system configuration

The application computer and Flexible Cart Machine software are used for

controlling the Flexicart from a personal computer.

The bin unit type depends on the VTR format. The number of bin units

depends on the number of installed VTRs.

Refer to the Installation Manual for details.

Location and Function of Parts

The illustrations used in this manual are those of the BFC-1, equipped with

two Betacam SP VTRs. The shape and number of the bin units depend on

the VTR format and the number of VTRs. The location and function of

parts are the same in all cases, however.

The lower part of the console is used to mount VTRs,

while the upper part is used for the bin units.

The VTRs are pulled out for maintenance. You can

choose whether the VTR is to be pulled forward or

backward when installing it in the Flexicart.

Refer to the Installation Manual for details.

3Bin unit

Holds video cassettes. Load cassettes here. Each bin

unit has four shelves for D-2 cassettes, five for

Betacam SP and S-VHS cassettes, and seven for

DVCAM cassettes.

One shelf can hold two S-VHS/S-size cassettes (D-2 or

Betacam SP), three DVCAM cassettes, or one M/L-

size cassette.

Refer to the Installtion Manual for bin unit installation.

4Elevator

Moves cassettes between bins and from the bin to the

VTR or vice versa.

The elevator automatically moves to its uppermost

position when you press the DOOR OPEN key to open

the Flexicart door. This allows you to load/remove

cassettes safely.

When using the optional bar code reader, the unit is

attached to the elevator.

5VTR

Plays back a cassette stored in the Flexicart, or records

programs to it.

The Flexicart allows you to mount D-2, Betacam SP,

S-VHS, or DVCAM VTRs.

For details, see the table listing the VTR format and the

number of cassettes in “Major Features” on page 6(E).
