Safety Regulations
Print servers are network interfaces for printers in office environments and are designed
for the direct integration of printers into networks. Before starting the initial operation
procedure of your device, please note the following safety regulations:
• Read the documentation and make sure that your system meets the requirements
listed therein.
• Avoid contact with humidity or liquids.
• The device must only be connected and operated if it is in perfect condition.
• Make sure that no-one steps on or stumbles over the cables.
• Do not connect a telephone cable to the RJ-45 connector. The RJ-45 connector may
only be connected to SELV voltages. For the connection to the RJ-45 connector only
S/UTP cabling (category 5 or better) may be used. The shielding must fit flushly to the
connector.
• The device must only be operated using the power cord included in the package.

* The shield connection of the RJ45 connector is connected to the shield of the printer port.
This connection must be taken into account when arranging your network cabling. For more
information, please consult your retailer.

Mounting the Print Server
The printer models CD 1216 and CD 2216 can be connected to the network via
the USB port 1 of the UT 16 print server.
The print server has been designed exclusively for the mentioned
printer models. Do not connect the print server to other printer models!
Proceed as follows:
1. Turn the printer off.
2. Disconnect the printer’s power cord.
3. Connect the print server (USB port 1) and the printer to the
data cable (USB 2.0) which is enclosed in the package.
4. Connect the network cable (RJ-45) to the print server.
5. Connect the print server to the power cord (DC 5V) which is
enclosed in the package.
6. Connect the printer's power cord to the printer.
7. Turn the printer on.
8.
Press the status button of the print server in order to print out
a status page.

Quick Installation Guide (en) 7
Print Server Parameters
All print server data required for installation can be found on the status page.
The status page can be printed out simply by pressing the status button on the
print server.
Hardware Address
A print server can be addressed by its world-wide unique hardware address. This
address is glued to the network board or to the housing of the box or pocket
print server. If the print server has already been installed, the hardware address
may be found on the status page, among other places.
Print Server Name
The print server has a default name which is set at the factory and cannot be
changed. The default name consists of two letters 'IC' and the last six digits of the
hardware address.
In Novell and Apple networks, the Novell or Apple name is used. Upon delivery of
the print server, the default name corresponds to the Novell or Apple name. By
means of the print server homepage, the PRINTSERVER-NetTool, or parameter
transfer via FTP, it is possible to change the Novell or Apple name.
IP Address
The IP address is a clear address for every node in your network, i.e., an IP address
may appear only once in your local network. The system administrator usually
assigns the IP address. It must be stored in the print server so that the print server
can be addressed within the network. For this purpose, various possibilities are
available. For more information on this topic, please read the detailed description
in the User Manual.
Host Name
The host name is an alias for an IP address. It is usually recommended that host
names should be used in your network. The host name used to address the print
sever in your local network may be chosen freely. It is, however, recommended to
select a name associated with the respective board, such as IC0001FF, or with the
printer.
Example:
Hardware address: 00:c0:eb:00:01:ff
Print server name: IC0001FF

8 [en] Quick Installation Guide
If the IP address must be changed at some point, only the new IP address must be
stored in the print server and the assignment of the IP address to the host name
must be changed in the 'hosts' file. In other operating systems, such as AS/400
for example, the name of the assignment file may differ.
Logical Printers
Logical printers are so-called pre-installed print server filters. Print data is
interpreted according to the set logical printer. The following pre-defined logical
printers are available:
If no logical printer has been selected during installation, the printing sequence
will be carried out automatically via the logical printer 1. Depending on your
system, logical printers may be addressed in various ways:
- in UNIX systems, Mac OS X networks and when printing via FTP, logical printers
are addressed with lp1 through lp8,
- in Novell networks, with #1 through #8
- in Windows networks, the printing sequence is carried out via the TCP/IP ports
- in Apple 9/8 networks, no logical printers are available
No. Preset function TCP/IP port
1Default setting 9100
2Changes line feed (LF) to carriage return with line feed (LF+CR) 9101
3Converts ASCII data into PostScript data 9102
4Prints a banner page in Novell networks or when the LPD protocol
is used
9103
5Prints all data in hex dump mode 9104
6Not assigned 9105
7Not assigned 9106
8Not assigned 9107

Installing the Print Server
The ’Printer Wizard’ is available for installing the print server in Windows
networks. The ’Printer Wizard’ can be used in all Windows networks. With the
assistance of the wizard, the print server is set up for printing via TCP/IP ports
(socket printing). In the process, the PRINTSERVER Print Monitor and, under
Windows XP and Windows 2000, the required printer driver are automatically
installed.
The Printer Wizard is available in two versions:
- printerwizardxp.exe for Windows XP/2000/NT4.0
- printerwizard9x.exe for Windows 98/95/Me
The wizard can either be started directly from the CD-ROM or can be copied to a
computer from where it can be started.
Proceed as follows:
1. Install the TCP/IP protocol on your computer.
2. Install the printer driver for Windows 98/95/Me/NT4.0.
3. Start the Printer Wizard.
- Start the file ’printerwizardxp.exe’ for Windows XP/2000/NT4.0.
- Start the file ’printerwizard9x.exe’ for Windows 98/95/Me.
4. Follow the instructions of the wizard.
After the completion of the wizard, the print server and the printer are
installed.
Instructions on how to install the print server in other networks can be found in
the Installation Manual on the product CD.

Print Server Administration
This chapter describes two administration methods. A detailed description of the
administration methods of the print server can be found in the User Manual on
the product CD.
Administration via the Print Server Homepage
The print server has its own homepage. The hardware address, the name of the
print server, or the activated protocols, for example, can easily be read from this
page. In order to call the print server homepage, enter the IP address of the print
server into an Internet browser (Internet Explorer 4 or later, Netscape 3 or later)
as a URL.
Administration via the PRINTSERVER-NetTool
The PRINTSERVER-NetTool is used to configure and administer your print server.
Here, the hardware address and the name of the print server can easily be read or
the print server parameter can be changed.
The PRINTSERVER-NetTool is available in three versions:
- for Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows 9x
- for Mac OS X
- for Linux
The PRINTSERVER-NetTool installation file is stored on the CD-ROM and can be
installed from there.
