System Requirements

In order to install the USB hard drive, you must have all

of the following:

• A computer running Windows 98, Windows Me, or

Windows 2000 Professional operating systems

(This USB hard drive is not compatible with Windows

95 or Windows NT)

• At least one unused USB 1.1 port (USB ports are

available on most PCs and laptops manufactured after

1998; USB add-on boards are also readily available.)

• A CD-ROM drive for driver and software installation

• 16 to 32 Mbytes of RAM are required to run the bonus

software.

About your USB hard drive

The DiskStor USB hard drive is a high-performance

external hard drive from Seagate Technology. It allows you

to add twenty or forty Gbytes of storage to your system in

a matter of minutes. Unlike most hard drives, this USB

hard drive has no jumpers to set and comes preformatted

and partitioned. All you have to do is plug it in!

As an additional bonus, the drive comes with free soft-

ware (on the Seagate USB Hard Drive Resource CD). To

learn about this software, highlight About the Software on

this CD in the CD browser menu. Then click the View

button or launch the file readme.txt. To install the bonus

software, highlight the program in the CD browser and

click the Run button.

Handling precautions:

To avoid damaging your USB hard drive and possibly

losing data, follow these precautions:

• Hard drives are extremely fragile. Do not drop or jar the

drive.

• Operate the drive only in a cool, dry location.

• Always save your data before unplugging the USB hard

drive’s power or USB connectors.

• Wait for the green drive activity light to go out before

moving the drive, turning the drive off, or disconnecting

the drive’s power or USB connectors.

install the necessary USB drivers.

1. Boot up your computer

Your computer should be powered on and Windows

should be fully loaded before you attach the drive.

2. Connect the power adapter

one end of the power cord into the transformer and then

Installing the Windows 98 USB driver

a) When you first attach the USB hard drive to your

computer, the “Add New Hardware Wizard” starts

up automatically. Click on the Next button.

Note. During the installation process, Windows may

identify your DiskStor drive as a

USB Device

, a

Freecom Cable USB

device, or some similar

name. This is normal, and indicates that your

computer has detected the USB controller in the

drive.

b) In the second wizard screen (shown in Figure 4),

select the option labeled, Search for the best driver

for your device (Recommended). Then click on the

Next button.

c) Insert the USB Hard Drive Resource CD in your CD-

ROM drive. Check the box to instruct Windows to

search for new drivers on your CD-ROM drive, as

shown in Figure 5. Then click on the Next button.

d) The next wizard screen lists the main driver file

(FCCABLE.INF). Click on the Next button. At this

point the driver files are copied to your internal hard

drive.

e) After the driver files have been copied, you will see

the message, “Windows has finished installing the

software that your new hardware device requires.”

Click on the Finish button.

f) As the wizard finishes, “New Hardware Found”

messages may appear temporarily as the system

identifies your new USB hard drive.

After you have installed the appropriate USB driver, your

DiskStor USB hard drive is ready to use! If you have

difficulties with the installation, try the troubleshooting

tips on page 14.
