1.0 INTRODUCTION

2.0 GENERAL INFORMATION
Before you start working with the HY-EX, please read the operating
instructions carefully. They contain important information for the
successful operation, maintenance and disposal of the hydraulic expander.

3.0 SPECIFICATION
With hydraulic pressure, this light-weight expander allows a perfect
expansion of copper- and aluminium pipes using just a few pump actions.
This device is characterized by following features:
Single hand operation
The hydraulic mechanism and the thumb
release allow for single hand operation.
The laser-engraved expander heads are easy
to identify and screw on quickly.
Space saving
Thanks to the unique compact pistol-shape it
is possible to work in hard to access places.
120° angle
Requires less pumping power, ensures
ergonomic handling and optimal tool
management.
Exchangeable heads
Fits on all HVAC/R standard imperial and
metric size tubes.

5.0 TRANSPORT, PACKAGING
5.1 TRANSPORT
The HY-EX comes with a plastic case to protect the parts. The plastic case
protects against vibrations during transport and handling. Always use the
plastic case to protect the HY-EX and accessories and secure it to the
cargo area during transport.
5.2 PACKAGING
The plastic case is made of polyethylene and protects the hydraulic
expander from drop damage. It also has space for accessories.
6.0 APPLICATION
1.Cut the pipe to the correct length and deburr it inside and out.
2. Choose the correct expander head size and screw it onto the HY-EX.
3. Push the pipe all the way onto the un-expanded expander head until it
bottoms out.
Warning
Do not push with excessive force and twisting. The expander head
should be free to rotate slightly in the pipe.
With pipes of diameter 1/4”, 5/16”, or 3/8” (6 mm, 8 mm, 10 mm),
please heat the copper pipe to be expanded or it will very likely split

depending on the age, quality and wall thickness of the small diameter
tubing.
4. Pull the pump handle until the correct tube diameter is reached.
Normally 16 –22 pumps depending on the size of the expander head
used.
5. Press the thumb release button to loosen and release the expander and
remove from the expanded pipe.
6. Use the saved power for the next step.
7.0 MAINTENANCE
For smooth operation, we recommend removing the expander head and
re-grease the thrust cone after expanding 20 tubes. (Multi-purpose
grease).
It is very important to keep the expander heads and the thrust cone free of
dirt and debris. If debris enters the back side of the expander heads or the
thrust cone, you risk the tool sticking in the expanded position.
Please keep the thrust cone and expander heads clean to ensure proper
operation.
7.1 Filling up hydraulic oil
It is possible to refill HY-EX hydraulic oil in the expander after 10’000 or
more usages.
Warning
The addition of hydraulic oil should be carried out at a suitable location, as
it is possible that oil might be spilled during re-filling and bleeding process.
Procedure:
1. Secure the HY-EX head down / handle up in a bench vice.
2. Unscrew the main handle anti-clockwise. Use a strap wrench to avoid
marring the tool’s finish.
3. Pull out the plug from the oil reservoir.

4. Fill up the hydraulic oil until the reservoir is full (about 15 ml if it is
empty). For an ideal performance, we suggest using ISO-HV-15
hydraulic oil
5. Fully pump up the HY-EX several times with the reservoir open, and
push the release button (yellow), to allow trapped air to escape from the
hydraulic oil.
6. If air escapes, the oil level may decrease. Repeat steps 4 and 5 until the
liquid level does not decrease anymore.
7. Close the reservoir with the plug.
8. Screw on the handle.
9. Clean the device.
8.0 GUARANTEE

the latest findings in occupational physiology and ergonomics. REFCO
Manufacturing Ltd has been certified according to DIN EN ISO 9001:2008.
Regular quality control checks as well as an accurate manufacturing
process guarantee reliable functionality and are the basis for the REFCO
guarantee, in accordance with the General Terms and Conditions of Sale
and Delivery applicable on the day of delivery. Excluded from the
guarantee are damage caused by obvious maltreatment and wear and
tear.

9.0 RETURN DISPOSAL
The HY-EX has been developed for long-term use.
Attention was paid to energy saving and environmental
compatibility at the material procurement and
production stages. REFCO embraces its responsibility
towards the environment, and has therefore been
certified in accordance with DIN EN ISO 14001:2015.
When decommissioning the device, the user must
follow local disposal regulations.
