1. Introduction
The Vol PAQ is a linear power amplifier designed o run Quanser experimen s. Vol PAQs
come in hree differen flavours: X1, X2 and X4. These suffixes s and for he number of
channels. Therefore, he Vol PAQ-X1 can power one load, he Vol PAQ-X2 can power wo,
and he Vol PAQ-X4 can power four. This manual is specifically for he X2 and X4 models.
If the equipment is used in a manner not specified by the manufacturer, the protection
provided by the equipment may be impaired.

2. S ecifications
The Vol PAQs replaces he UPM line of power amplifiers. Every Vol PAQ-X2/X4 consis s
of he following componen s and fea ures:

Enable User applies his signal. In he Vol PAQ-X2,
enable 0 and 1 are used. Enable 2 and 3 are
floa ing. Vol PAQ-X4 uses all 4 enable pins.
0V = Disable
5V = Enable
/Faul User reads his signal. In he Vol PAQ-
X2, /Faul 0 and /Faul 1 are used. /Faul 2
and /Faul 3 are floa ing. The Vol PAQ-X4
uses all /Faul pins.
/Faul 0 = 0 means

5. Cables
4-Pin DIN to 6-Pin DIN

E-Stop
The E-S op mus be plugged in o he X2 or X4
uni for proper opera ion.

16-Pin Ribbon Cable
This cable is used o connec a Quanser DAQ
o he enable lines of he Vol PAQ-X2 and
he Vol PAQ-X4. Addi ionally, his cable also
carries amplifier faul lines, which allows he
user o read he s a us of he individual
amplifiers.
Split 16 Pin Ribbon Cable (Used only with Q8-USB version 2.0 and earlier)
This cable is used o connec a Quanser Q8-
USB DAQ (version 2 and earlier) o he enable
lines of he Vol PAQ-X2 and Vol PAQ-X4.
Adi ionally, his cable also carries amplifier
faul lines, which allows he user o read he
s a us of he individual amplifiers.
6. Enabling The Am lifier Through
QUARC
Connec one end of he 16-Pin ribbon cable o DI/O 0-7 header of he DAQ. Nex connec
he o her end o your Vol PAQ-X2/X4. Through QUARC, se digi al channels 0-3 as
ou pu s. Wri e a logic 1 o he channels 0-3 o enable and wri e a logic 0 o disable he
respec ive channel. The LED of he associa ed amplifier will urn on when correc ly
enabled.
Through QUARC, se digi al channels 4-7 as inpu s. You can read hese lines o recognize
he s a us of a specific amplifier channel. For example, if you read digi al inpu channel 4 as
logic 1, i means ha amplifier channel 0 is enabled. If you read digi al inpu channel 5 as
logic 0, i means ha amplifier channel 1 is faul ed/disabled.
