PHANTOM

WARNINGS

PHANTOM users must be familiar with workplace hazards prior to using the equipment and must be fully

trained in the use of the apparatus.

This Manual must be read in conjunction with the filter Manual prior to using the equipment.

This product must only be used with Protector-branded filters manufactured by Scott Health and Safety

Limited. The use of any other filters will negate the approval and will be likely to reduce the level of

protection provided.

Change the filter if contaminant can be smelled, tasted, or if the canister is clogged. Filter life depends

upon the density of contaminant in the atmosphere, wearer work rate and heart/lung efficiency.

DO NOT use PHANTOM in confined spaces, oxygen deficient atmospheres (<19.5%), oxygen enriched

atmospheres (>23%) or where there is an immediate hazard to life or health.

DO NOT use in an explosive atmosphere, where the explosion hazard requires the use of Intrinsically Safe

respiratory protective equipment.

DO NOT use if the ambient temperature is outside of the range -10°C to +50°C. Humidity levels up to 95%

RH do not present any operational problems.

DO NOT use if the respirator or filter is damaged. DO NOT use if the filter is clogged or time-expired (see

filter label).

Protection will only be obtained if the unit is fitted correctly.

It is unlikely that the requirements for leakage will be achieved if hair, spectacle side arms or clothing

intrude into the faceseal.

At very high work rates, pressure inside the facemask may become negative at peak inhalation.

In the unlikely event of power failure while in use, do not remove the respirator. Breathe normally. The

respirator will continue to provide a high degree of protection, acting as standard negative-pressure filter

equipment. Exit the hazardous area immediately and report the fault.

DO NOT modify facemasks as this will invalidate all approvals and may result in death or injury to the

wearer.

INTRODUCTION

General:

PHANTOM is a TM3 power-assisted

respirator conforming to EN 147 : 1991

with a nominal protection factor of 2000.

The respirator comprises: a full facemask

with an integral blower, a mask-mounted

filter and waistbelt-mounted battery.

The blower draws air into the facemask

through the filter and directs the filtered

air up to the left side of the visor. The

constant flow of air keeps the visor clear

of misting, removes perspiration and

provides air to the face.

Exhaled breath leaves the facemask

through the exhalation valve in the side of

the mask (see Fig. 1).

Wearers are able to decontaminate and

shower after work, whilst still wearing the

respirator.

Weights:

•Facemask, with blower and filter -

755g.

•Battery - 745g.

In accordance with BS4275, it is

advisable that respirators of this class are

not used in contaminant concentrations

exceeding 40 x Occupational Exposure

Limit.

Facemask:

The facemask is moulded in non-

dermatitic silicone rubber.

The visor complies with the optical and

impact requirements of EN 166 Grade

1B.

Flow-rate:

The constant flow-rate of the standard

PHANTOM when used with a PF251/2

filter:

•exceeds 160 litres per minute for a

minimum of 6 hours.

•exceeds 120 litres per minute for a

maximum of 8 hours.

Blower:

The blower has a radial fan driven by a

DC motor, connected by coiled cable to a

polarised bayonet plug. The airflow

produced is directed by a contoured grill

over the inside of the visor, eliminating

the need for an inner mask.

The motor has an expected life-span of at

least 1000 hours.

Filters:

Specially developed for the power

assisted respirator the filter has a deep

pleated internal structure, giving a large

surface area, which minimises clogging

and the resistance to breathing.

The louvred entry port, which deflects

water droplets during showering, has a

raised lip for attaching the air flow

indicator required for pre-use checks. The

lip also retains the filter sealing cap used

during facemask donning and filter

disposal. A pre-filter can be fitted if

required.

Battery:

The nickel-cadmium re-chargeable

battery, has a polarised bayonet socket

which ensures correct and positive

connection. Internal electronics extend

battery life by controlling the power output

over the full duration of discharge.

A warning buzzer and flashing LED

indicate that battery voltage is below

optimum level and the battery is about to

fully discharge.

The battery has a design-duration of 8

hours and an expected life-span of at

least 500 recharge cycles.

Battery Charger:

The battery charger with polarised

bayonet plug has a light emitting diode

(LED) charging indicator. Battery charging

takes up-to 16 hours (dependant upon

which charger is used) in order to ensure

full battery duration.

Spectacle Frames - (Optional):

For spectacle wearers an approved

spectacle frame, which fits wholly within

the facemask without interfering with the

mask-to-face seal, is available from Scott

Health and Safety Limited under Article

Number 1023517.

BEFORE USE

Unpacking:

Check that all of the following are

present:

•Facemask

•Blower

•PF251/2 Filter

•Battery

•Flow Indicator

•O-Ring Tool

•MS4 Silicone Grease

options will be supplied with PHANTOM if

ordered.

Battery:

To ensure full duration, the battery should

be charged in accordance with the

instructions given under Maintenance.

Blower:

Ensure that the O-Ring is lightly

lubricated with MS4 Grease and correctly

positioned in the forward groove on the

outside of the blower (see Fig. 2).

Ensure that the filter seal is in position at

the bottom of the threaded port in the

blower assembly (see Fig. 2).

Install the blower by feeding the plug and

cable from inside the facemask through

the front opening. Press the blower fully

into its housing at the front of the

facemask and lock in place by firmly

screwing in the filter.

Connect the plug to the battery by

aligning the larger of the two bayonet ears

on the plug, with the larger of the two

slots in the battery socket.

The plug is keyed so that it will only enter

the socket in the battery neck when

correctly aligned.

Push down and turn the plug clockwise

45° to the OFF intermediate position.

The plug is now retained in the socket,

ready to be switched ON.

Flow Test:

WARNING:

The flow indicator is a measuring device.

Check for damage and ensure that it is

clean and dry before flow-test.

Remove the filter cover (if fitted). Connect

the end of the flow indicator to the lip of

the louvred port on the front of the filter.

Hold the facemask such that the flow

indicator is pointing vertically downwards.

The float should fall to the bottom of flow

indicator tube (see Fig. 3).

Operate PHANTOM by rotating the

battery plug fully clockwise to the ON

position.

Correct functioning is shown by the float

rising to the top of the flow indicator tube.

If the float does not rise to the top of the

tube a low flow-rate is indicated. To

determine the probable cause carry out

the following fault analysis:

i) Renew filter and re-test. If the test

now indicates sufficient air flow the

original filter was clogged and

should be discarded.

ii) If the flow is still insufficient, replace

the battery with one that is freshly

charged. If the test now indicates

sufficient flow the original battery

should be recharged.

iii) If the flow is still insufficient, return the

complete respirator to an approved

distributor for repair.

Remove the flow indicator and replace the

filter cover.

WARNING:

DO NOT use respirators that fail the

Flow-test.

WEARING

WARNING:

Before using the respirator, ensure

that a new filter has been firmly

screwed into place, the battery is fully

charged and the flow-test has been

satisfactorily completed.

Donning:

Attach the battery to a waistbelt through

the loop retainer.

Insert the plug on the end of the cable

into the battery socket and rotate

clockwise to the intermediate OFF

position.

Check that the filter is firmly attached to

the facemask and remove the filter cover.

Adjust all head harness straps to the fully

slackened position and place the

neckstrap around the neck.

With thumbs inside the facemask, put

chin into facemask first and pull the

straps over the head. Position the

facemask so that chin fits snugly into the

chin-cup.

Gently tighten the head harness, lower

straps first (see Fig. 4). DO NOT over-

tighten.

Leak-test Facemask:

Place the filter cover or palm of the hand

over the filter’s louvred entry port.

Inhale gently until the facemask collapses

slightly against the face.

Hold your breath for 10 seconds. If the

facemask falls away from the face, the

correct seal has not been achieved.

Remove the filter cover or palm of the

hand, adjust the facemask, re-tighten the

head harness strap and repeat the

previous procedure.

When a correct seal is achieved, remove

filter cover or palm of the hand.

WARNING:

DO NOT use respirators that fail the

Leak-test.

Proceed with the tasks to be performed.

WARNING:

DO NOT remove the facemask until

well clear of the hazard area.

CLEANING

WARNING:

When cleaning the respirator, suitable

precautions must be taken against the

inhalation of any harmful dusts and

contaminants that may be present on

the outer surfaces.

CAUTIONS:

•DO NOT use abrasive cleaning

materials.

•DO NOT use: detergent,

petroleum spirit, chlorinated

degreasing fluids (e.g.

trichloroethylene) or organic-

based solvents to clean any part

of the apparatus.

At the end of each work shift, the

respirator must be cleaned and if

necessary, decontaminated. These

procedures must always be carried out in

a safe area.

Disconnect the plug from the battery.

Replace the filter cap on the used filter,

remove and dispose of safely in

accordance with any plant or safety

authority instructions.

Gently push the blower assembly out of

the facemask and feed the cable through

the mask opening.

Facemask:

CAUTION:

Wash the facemask in a tepid soap and

water solution. Use toilet soap, not

detergent. Rinse thoroughly in clean

running water, paying particular

attention to the exhalation valve.

After rinsing, shake the mask vigorously

to remove excess water and allow to dry

away from direct heat or sunlight. To

avoid damage to the visor, do not place

the mask face down on rough surfaces.

CAUTION:

Dry the respirator thoroughly if it is to

be stored at temperatures below

freezing.

Note:

Where disinfection is required after

rinsing, use TriGeneTM solution. Rinse the

facemask thoroughly in clean water.

When dry, polish the visor inside and out

with a clean lint-free soft cloth. Replace

the visorguard for protection.

Inspect individual parts of the facemask

and replace missing or damaged parts.

Fully slacken the head harness ready for

use.

Blower:

CAUTION:

DO NOT immerse the blower

assembly.

Note:

The blower is a sealed unit and cannot be

serviced beyond O-Ring and filter seal

replacement.

Wipe the blower with a damp cloth or

disinfectant wipe.

Inspect the O-Ring and filter seal and

replace if damaged.

Battery:

CAUTION:

DO NOT immerse the battery

assembly.

The battery may be wiped with a damp

cloth.

Note:

The battery is a sealed unit and cannot

be serviced.

MAINTENANCE

Maintenance tasks must only be

performed by trained personnel. Please

contact Scott Health and Safety Limited

for training information.

Battery Charging:

WARNING:

Batteries MUST be charged in a safe

area.

Optimum performance with new battery

packs is achieved only after they have

completed three charge-cycles. To

maintain the optimum performance Scott

Health and Safety Limited recommend

that the battery pack is fully discharged

approximately once every fifty uses.

Plug the battery charger into a suitable

mains supply. Plug the charging lead into

the battery socket and turn fully clockwise

to the ON position.

During charging, the battery LED is lit

continuously indicating that a good

connection between the charger and

battery has been made.

The red LED on the charger will illuminate

and remain illuminated throughout the

charging period. If a SmartCharger is

used, the LED will flash slowly once the

battery is fully charged.

If the standard battery charger is used,

the battery should reach a full charge in

approximately 16 hours. Use of the

optional SmartCharger reduces the

charging time to around 7 hours and

removes the need for a periodic complete

discharge cycle.

Note:

The battery charger is a sealed unit and

cannot be serviced.

Exhalation Valve:

The exhalation valve should appear as-

new, showing no signs of damage.

Remove and examine the valve for signs

of wear or damage; and replace if

necessary.

If replacement is not necessary,

thoroughly clean the valve in a solution of

warm, soapy water before re-fitting in

position.

CAUTION:

DO NOT use detergent.

Exhalation valves must be replaced at

least annually, regardless of condition.

The valve flap is marked with a code

indicating the year and year quarter of

manufacture (see Fig. 5). The number

stamped on the valve flap is the year of

manufacture. The dot, stamped in the

relevant quadrant, is the quarter of the

year in which manufacture took place.

One dot = January to March, two dots =

April to June, three dots = July to

September and four dots = October to

December.

In the example shown in Fig. 5, the valve

flap was manufactured between January

and March in 2006.

Blower O-Ring and Filter Seal:

The respirator has an O-Ring between

the blower and the facemask; and a seal

between the filter and the blower. Both

must be inspected for wear after each

use and replaced annually.

Head Harness:

The head harness should be checked for

possible failure, paying particular

attention to the anchor studs.

The head harness is marked with a code

indicating the date of manufacture (see

Fig. 6). The number indicates the year of

manufacture and the dot signifies the

quarter of the year in which manufacture

took place. One dot = January to March,

two dots = April to June, three dots = July

to September and four dots = October to

December.

In the example shown in Fig. 6, the head

harness was manufactured between

January and March in 2006.

Note:

Replacement intervals for components

marked with a date of manufacture

should be calculated from the date of first

use of the component and not the date of

manufacture.

FITTING SPARES

To Replace the Visor:

1. Using a Pozi-drive Screwdriver,

unscrew the two visor clamp screws and

remove the visor clamps from the mask.

2. Remove the visor from the location

groove in the outer mask.

3. Replace in reverse order, ensuring

that the witness marks on the visor and

frame are in alignment with the centre-

line of the facemask.

4. Tighten screws evenly. DO NOT

over-tighten.

Note:

If required, the visor clamp grooves may

be lubricated with a solution of soap and

water in order to ease assembly.

To Replace the Exhale Valve:

1. Holding the outer edge of the

exhale valve cover, pull to remove from

the side fitting.

2. Grasp the exhale valve flap and pull

gently to remove from the side fitting (see

Fig. 7).

3. Position the replacement valve flap

onto the side fitting, ensuring that it lies

flat and is correctly seated.

4. Replace the exhale valve cover by

aligning it with the side fitting and

applying pressure until the cover snaps

into place.

To Replace the Blower O-Ring:

1. Withdraw the blower motor from the

facemask, following the instructions given

in this manual under Cleaning.

2. Remove the O-Ring from the

blower motor.

3. Lightly lubricate the replacement O-

Ring with MS4 Silicone Grease.

4. Fit the replacement O-Ring into the

forward groove of the blower assembly,

taking care to ensure that the O-Ring is

seated correctly.

5. Re-fit the blower motor to the

facemask.

To Replace the Filter Seal:

1. Withdraw the blower motor from the

facemask, following the instructions given

in this manual under Cleaning.

2. Using the O-Ring Tool provided,

gently remove the seal from its location

flange (see Fig. 8).

3. Position the replacement seal in the

cavity with the moulded number facing

downwards (so that it cannot be seen).

4. Using the O-Ring Tool, push the

seal until it slips over the flange and

snaps into place. Continue around the

seal until evenly seated.

CAUTION:

Rubber components should always be

stored in clean, dry conditions away

from direct sunlight and heat.
