Welcome to the
Universal Remote Case
for iPhone 3GS/3G
by
Turn your iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS into an infrared
universal remote control device with:
• The Universal Remote Case by POWER A
• The POWER A Universal Remote App
• iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS
• Any remote control device that uses
infrared technology
If you don’t have the Universal Remote App on your
iPhone yet, download it now. Just tap the App Store
icon on your iPhone, search for Universal Remote,
then select POWER A Universal Remote, and tap
Install—it’s free!
To download the Universal Remote App using your
computer, start iTunes. Search for Universal Remote,
tap Applications, then tap the Free App button next
to the POWER A Universal Remote.
When the download is complete, sync your iPhone
to iTunes to install the app on your phone.
Slide your iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS into the two-piece
Universal Remote Case. When the case is completely closed,
the adapter is connected correctly.
Tap Yes to connect to the iTunes store and download the app.
If you insert your iPhone in the Universal Remote Case
before you download the Universal Remote App, you see
this message:

Q: What kind of remote can I program?
A: You can program any remote control that uses infrared
technology to send signals to the original equipment. The
Universal Remote does not work with Bluetooth, laser, radio
frequency, or other wireless technologies.
Program Your Remote

using the POWER A Universal Remote app interface, visit
PowerA.com and select ‘Support’.

2When programming directly from an existing
remote, point the blue LED sensor on the
Universal Remote at the LED sensor on the
remote control.
3Test your remote with the device it controls to make
sure all buttons work. If a button doesn’t work, then
follow the same steps you used before to reprogram
the button and save it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Does this case work with iPod touch models?
A: No, only iPhone 3GS/3G models. See PowerA.com for a
version that works with iPod touch.
iPhone doesn’t fit in Universal Remote Case
The Universal Remote Case works only with iPhone 3G and
iPhone GS models.
Universal Remote is not responding
• Your iPhone battery might be low. Recharge your phone
and try again.
• Check to see that the blue LED on the Universal Remote
lights up when a button is tapped. If the LED doesn’t light
up, data is not being transferred. Remove the iPhone
from the case, reinsert it, and try again.
• A button may not have been successfully programmed. Try
reprogramming the button. During programming, check
to see that the blue LED on the Universal Remote Case
flashes. If not, remove the iPhone from the case, reinsert
it, and try again. You might need to restart your iPhone.
Universal Remote won’t learn properly
If you are having trouble programming buttons, review
these tips:
• Buttons. Press the button on the Universal Remote once,
then briefly press the button on the remote control.
The blue LED on the Universal Remote flashes. Wait for
the “Button Learned” message before programming
another button.
• Distance. The remote control device should be four to six
inches from the Universal Remote during programming.
If signal is not being transferred, try placing the remotes
one to two inches apart or at a 45-degree angle.
• Batteries. Low batteries in your remote control device
can send a weak or erratic infrared signal that can’t be
received. Install new batteries and try again.
Troubleshooting
• Lighting. Sunlight and bright light can sometimes
interfere with infrared signals used by the Universal
Remote. Try programming in a dark or near-dark room.
• Infrared sensor. Check the location of the infrared sensor
on your remote control device. On some popular models,
it is on the back of the device, not the front.
• TV Power. The Universal Remote can only learn the TV
power button from the actual TV remote, not from a
another programmed universal remote controller.
• Interference. Some high-end electronic equipment sends
infrared signals back to the remote when a button is
pressed, which can interfere with programming. To avoid
interference, program the Universal Remote in a different
room, away from the original equipment.
• Reflection. Smooth, glossy, and glass surfaces can
reflect infrared signals. Place the remote control
and the Universal Remote on a matte or soft surface
during programming.
• Incompatible device. The Universal Remote works with
infrared technology. If your remote control uses another
technology, such as Bluetooth, it cannot be programmed.
Also note that some manufacturers use proprietary codes
that cannot be learned.
