CAUTION

1. Turn the laser switch on after the probe was connected.

2. Do not see the laser light through a lens or an optical instrument.

1. Summary

This laser tissue blood flowmeter, OMEGAFLO FLO-C1, is useful

instrument for measuring tissue blood flow in skin, brain, internal organs, etc. for

animals.

FLO-C1 can measure blood flow continuously and non-invasively, compared

to H2 and Xe clearance method , and is used widely from in fundamental

research to in clinical applications. FLO-C1 uses a semiconductor laser diode

which is hardly affected by the difference of absorption due to oxy-hemoglobin

and deoxy-hemoglobin.

The measurement depth is about 1 mm from the surface in case of using

standard probes. FLO-C1 outputs three blood flow parameters, tissue blood

flow, tissue blood volume and tissue blood velocity, then the hemodynamic

under study in detail can be observed.

2) Part Functions

① Indicator

This LED indicator shows the measurement value of one of tissue blood flow

parameters selected by "Parameter selection switch ②". Also, it shows the

output mode selected by Mode switch ③.

FLO-C1 measures three blood flow parameters, FLOW, MASS and VEL.

FLOW, MASS and VEL. represent tissue blood flow, tissue blood volume and

tissue blood velocity respectively. The ranges of the three parameters are 0-

100, 0-2000 and 0-10.0. All of the parameters can be always monitored

from "Output 1" regardless of the indicated parameter.

Output mode has three modes. "MEA" mode is for measurement, "0" mode

shows 0 (zero) on this indicator and sets the output to 0 (V) and "CAL" mode

shows calibration value and outputs its voltage. The calibration values of

FLOW, MASS and VEL. on Indicator are 10.0, 200 and 1.0 respectively. The

voltage of the all calibration value is 1.0 (V).

② Parameter selection switch

One of the three parameters, FLOW, MASS and VEL., showed on

"Indicator" is selected by this switch.

③ Mode switch

Output mode of "MEA"、"0" and "CAL"is selected by this switch.

④ Laser switch

Laser power is operated by this switch. Press this switch for ON and the red

light glows.

! Optical connectors

Optical connectors to connect a probe for FLO-C1. The plugs of standard

probes are not specified by RED and BLACK. The plugs of a special probe

are specified by RED and BLACK.

⑥ REFLEX

This bar LED shows the detected laser light intensity on measurement.

The blood flow parameters can be measured when this lamp is green. The

measurement is not affected regardless of the position of the green lamp.

The red lamp on "L" side signifies insufficiency of detected laser light. The

causes of this state are follows:

1) a probe is not put on tissue correctly,

2) laser light is OFF,

3) optical connectors are not connected correctly,

4) a probe is broken,

5) a semiconductor laser is broken.

The red lamp on "H" side signifies over detection of laser light. The causes

of this state are follows :

1) a probe is not put on tissue correctly,

2) tissue under study is highly scattering media.

The solution for measuring highly scattering tissue is use of a specified probe.

⑦ Handle

Use this handle for carrying FLO-C1.

⑧ Time constant switch

The time-constant of output can be selected by this switch. FLO-C1 has three

states of the time-constant, 0.1(sec), 1(sec) and 3(sec).

⑨ Output 1

The output of three parameters. The voltage of the three parameters is

0-10(V). The output is not affected by "Parameter selection switch".

Measuring value is obtained from 0-10(V) on "MEA" mode.

0 (zero) (V) is generated on each parameter on "0" mode.

1(V) is obtained on each parameter on "CAL" mode.

⑩ Output 2

Detected laser light intensity showed on "REFLEX" is obtained from this

output. The voltage is 0-10(V).

⑪ AC power input

Insert 3P power cord.

⑫ Power switch

This switch is used for "ON-OFF".

3. Connection to Recorder and Operation

1)Connection to a recorder

(1) Insert the plugs of a probe into the optical connectors of FLO-C1 and screw

the coupling of the plugs to the right by one hand holding the black rubber

boots not to turn by the other. Insert the plugs slowly and in a straight line.

Do not insert the plugs slantwise by force.

Hold this black rubber boots not to turn,

and screw this coupling.

FLO-C1 has laser incidence and receiving optical connectors. The probe not

being colored has no side. Both plugs of the probes can be inserted into

either side of the optical connectors. Insert the red plug of the probe into the

red mark connector, and the black plug into the black connector if the probe

connectors are colored.

Also, the red connector has the function of adjusting the output laser power.

The output laser power can be lower turning the front ring to CW direction.

When contact type probe is used, make REFLEX level⑥ being about

center of the LED bar graph using this adjusting ring.

(2) Turn "LASER" switch on. The red lamp is lighted.

(3)Calibration

① Set the full scale of a recorder at 10 (V) using the range dial of the recorder.

② Press "MODE" switch and set at "0".

③ Set the pen of the recorder at zero line using the zero null dial. of the

recorder.

④ Press "MODE" switch again and set at "CAL".

FLOW : 10.0 , MASS: 200 , VEL. : 1.00

are obtained from the out put of FLO-C1. The each voltage is 1 (V).

Set the pen of the recorder at an adequate point.
