1Introduction

1.1 About Smart IM

Thank you for choosing Smart IM as your instant messaging solution for your

Nokia 7610 mobile device.

Smart IM is a powerful instant messaging service, especially designed for

companies and business groups. It allows you to stay in instant contact with

colleagues in your company, as well as friends in other business groups; at

any time you can know whether each of your contacts is available or busy,

and exchange instant messages with your peers.

1.2 About This Manual

To make instant messaging convenient in mobile devices, Smart IM provides

an easy-to-use, self-explanatory user interface.

This user manual will guide you through the first stages of setting up and

using Smart IM,and introduce you to the various features of the application.

Quick guide for advanced users can be found in chapter 5.

2Getting Started

2.1 Starting Smart IM

Press the (Menu) key to switch to the main applications menu of your

device. Navigate through the menu using the joystick until the Smart IM icon

is selected, and press the joystick.

If the Smart IM icon does not appear in the applications menu, please refer to

chapter 6 for installation instructions.

An introduction screen is displayed while Smart IM starts, immediately

followed by the Login screen (See 2.2).

2.2 How to Log In

Smart IM maintains a permanent connection with the Smart server. The

server provides information about users and delivers instant messages

between them. To enjoy these services, you must log into the Smart server

and identify yourself; this can be done in the Login screen.

Three data fields appear in the Login screen: Username,Password and

Auto Login.Use the joystick to navigate through these fields; to modify the

contents of a field, select it and press the joystick.

•Start by filling in your Username and Password in the appropriate fields.

If you are not familiar with these data, please consult your administrator;

in most cases, your user name is simply your email address.

•The Auto Login field can be set either On or Off.When set On,Smart

IM will automatically log in immediately after the application starts.

TIPS

Your user name and password will be saved in the relevant fields, saving you the effort of retyping

them on your next login.

If your device is shared by multiple users, it is recommended to turn Auto Login off, to protect your

privacy.

You may modify your settings later, even after login is performed (See 2.8).

After filling in your details press the Options key and select Login. A

notification screen appears while Smart IM logs in, followed by the

application's Main Screen (See 2.3).

NOTE

If your device is not yet connected to the network, it will now perform the standard stages of

connecting, and only then perform the actual login procedure.

2.3 The Main Screen

The Main Screen consists of 3 tabs:

•The Contacts tab (designated by the icon )displays your contacts list.

Chapter 3 discusses this list in further detail.

•The Active Chats tab (designated by the icon )displays a list of all

your current chat-peers. Chapter 4 discusses this tab in further detail.

•The My Status tab (designated by the icon )displays your current

status. See more about this tab in section 3.4.

The name of the currently selected tab appears in the title, followed by a

parenthesized text to denote your current status (See 3.1).

You may switch between the tabs by moving the joystick to the left or right.

2.4 Logging Out

To log out from the Smart server, press the Options key and select Logout.

Logging out will take you back to the Login screen (See 2.2).

When logged out, you appear as Offline to other users (See 3.1), and you

cannot receive messages or notifications; any messages sent to you while

logged out will be stored in the server, and delivered to you as soon as you

NOTES

An Options key appears only in the Contacts tab and the Active Chats tab of the Main Screen (See

2.3). To logout, start by navigating to one of these tabs.

If you are currently logged in and you wish to login as a different user, you should first log out, then

modify your login details and log in again (See 2.2).

2.5 Hiding the Application

At any time you may hide Smart IM by pressing the Close key in any tab of

the Main Screen.

You may also hide the application by switching to other applications, using the

application-switching window; to reach this window, hold down the (Menu)

key for a few seconds.

Note that hiding Smart IM (or switching to other applications) does not stop it

from running; the application will keep running in the background, until you

explicitly stop it (See 2.7).

As in any other application, you can switch back to Smart IM using the

application-switching window (see above). Alternately, you can navigate back

to the main applications menu (by pressing the menu key ), select the Smart

IM icon and press the joystick.

2.6 Notifications

Smart IM generates user notifications to indicate important events, such as

new messages arriving (See 4.2.4)or a new contact request (See 3.5.3).

Such notifications will be generated even if the application is currently running

in the background (See 2.5).

Some notifications only involve the sounding of a special tone; others will pop

up a notification message. When Smart IM is running in the background,

some notifications may pop the application back to the foreground.

2.7 Stopping the Application

To stop Smart IM from running, press the Options key (either in the Main

Screen or the Login screen) and select Exit.

Stopping the application is recommended only when you wish to log out for a

long time, or when you wish to free device resources (such as memory) for

the use of other applications.

NOTES

Stopping Smart IM while logged in will cause the application to automatically log out from the Smart

server.

The Options key does not exist in the My Status tab of the Main Screen;if you are currently in this

tab, start by moving the joystick to the left, to switch to one of the other tabs.

Note that the Close option in the same menu only hides the application, it does not stop it from

running (See 2.5).

2.8 Modifying Application Settings

To modify the application settings, press the Options key (in either the Main

Screen or the Login screen) and select Settings. The Settings screen is

displayed.

•The Server Port field stores the port of the Smart server.

NOTES

Disabling sounds in your device profile automatically applies for Smart IM,there is no need to

explicitly disable sounds in this screen also.

Do not modify the Server Address and Server Port fields without consulting your system

administrator.

The Options key does not exist in the My Status tab of the Main Screen;if you are currently in this

tab, start by moving the joystick to the left , to switch to one of the other tabs.

After modifying your settings:

•Press the Save key to save your changes and go back.

•Press the Cancel key to discard your changes and go back.

2.9 Connection Failures

The connection between Smart IM and the Smart server may be lost due to

various reasons (e.g., network failure, low signal etc). In such a case, Smart

IM will wait for a few seconds, then automatically try reconnecting to the

server, while a notification message pops up, as described in the attached

figure.

•Press the OK key to skip the waiting period and immediately reconnect to

the server.

•Select Cancel to log out from the server and cancel all reconnection

attempts.

Chat screens which were active before the connection failure will be restored

upon reconnecting to the Smart server.
