PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
FAXSWITCH 2 is a sophisticated Line Sharing device which is designed
to allow you to connect a FAX MACHINE or FAX/MODEM to your existing
Telecom or PABX line.
It provides you with the ultimate in flexibility, in order to meet a wide range
of applications. This device is designed to operate on an ordinary single
telephone line, with a PABX or other Multi Line telephone system.
It provides you with a choice of TWO different methods of automatically
receiving incoming FAX calls, on an existing voice line.
TRADITIONAL (AUTO-ANSWER) FAXSWITCH OPERATION
VOICE PRIORITY FAXSWITCH OPERATION
For outgoing calls, an EXCLUSION FACILITY is provided. This means
that if the telephone line is already in use when the FAX device attempts
to initiate a call, it will be blocked from the line and will not be allowed
access to the line until the line is free. Similarly, telephones connected
direct to the PHONE PORT outlet of FAXSWITCH 2 cannot ‘Barge-In’ on
a FAX transmission.
If you intend to use the Traditional (Auto-Answer) Faxswitch Method and
you have more than 1 telephone socket in use on your line, then
FAXSWITCH 2 will require professional installation.
If you intend to use the Voice Priority Faxswitch Method, or you use a
Cordless Phone with 1 or more handsets, then you will be able to simply
connect FAXSWITCH 2 to ANY telephone socket on your line. It will take
you just a few minutes.
PABX applications will require professional installation.
Please review this user guide thoroughly, select the operating mode
which best suits your requirements and then follow carefully the
appropriate installation and operating procedure.

TWO OPERATING MODES
FaxSwitch 2 provides Two methods of receiving Fax calls:
1. TRADITIONAL (AUTO-ANSWER) FAXSWITCH
OPERATION
This mode is based on the traditional method, where
FaxSwitch 2 will answer ALL incoming calls FIRST, briefly
“listen” to this call for Fax Calling Tones (CNG Tones) and then
connect the call to your Fax or Telephones. See page 5 for full
details.
You will receive Fax Calls without your telephones ringing.
Your incoming Voice Callers will experience a short detection
routine & delay before ringing through to your telephones.
This mode requires installation by a telephone technician where
more than one telephone socket is used on your line.
2. VOICE PRIORITY FAXSWITCH OPERATION
This mode is TRANSPARENT in operation, which means that
FaxSwitch 2 will not ANSWER the call. It operates with your
telephone line in a unique manner and will not affect the
operation of any of the other telephone devices that may be fitted
to your line. See page 6 for full details.
Your incoming Voice Callers do not experience any delay
Calls must be answered first, by a telephone or answering
machine before an incoming Fax call can be detected and
transferred.
Not recommended unless an Answering Machine is used. You
can use a separate Answering Machine, or an Answering
Machine combined within your Fax Device.

OPERATING PROCEDURE
For Traditional Faxswitch method
This method is based on the traditional Faxswitch method, where this unit
will automatically answer ALL incoming calls FIRST after 2 rings. It will
then briefly “listen” to this call for Fax Calling Tones (CNG Tones).
If CNG tones are detected, FaxSwitch 2 will RING your attached Fax
Device and connect the incoming Fax Call to it.
If CNG tones are NOT detected, FaxSwitch 2 will RING all of the
telephones attached to the PHONE PORT outlet.
With this mode of operation, you will be able to receive Fax Calls
WITHOUT your telephones ringing first.
Incoming voice calls however will all be answered first by FaxSwitch 2
a short delay will be experienced by the caller before your telephones
begin to ring. FaxSwitch 2 will generate a ring, similar to the normal
telephone exchange ring back to your callers until you are able to answer
the line.
Fax calls that are manually dialed (i.e. the caller has dialed your number
but has not pressed the Send key) can be transferred to your Fax device,
from any telephone on your line, by pressing 3 on your telephone. You
should then hang up.
Please Note - With this mode, all telephones connected to your telephone
line must be connected direct to the LINE OUT port of FaxSwitch 2. If
you are only using one telephone on your line, or a single Cordless
Telephone system, then you should connect this to the LINE OUT port of
your unit. With this method, if you have other phones located on other
telephone sockets on your line, then you will need to have Professional
Installation.
When used on PBX systems, FaxSwitch 2 should be installed by an
ACMA approved telephone cabling technician.
DIP SWITCH SETTINGS
If you wish to set FaxSwitch 2 to operate in this mode, please set :
Dip Switch 1 to the OFF position.

OPERATING PROCEDURE
For Voice Priority Faxswitch method
In this mode, FaxSwitch 2 is set to VOICE PRIORITY operation and is
TRANSPARENT so that your voice callers will not detect its presence.
It will also work with all other telephone devices fitted to your line. If you
wish to set FaxSwitch 2 to operate in this mode, please set :
Dip Switch 1 to the OFF position.
OPERATION WHEN OFFICE IS ATTENDED
Answer all of your incoming calls, on any phone and converse with your
callers as normal. However, if you hear a ‘beep’ soon after answering,
then this call is an Auto-dialed Fax Transmission. FaxSwitch 2 will also
hear this ‘beep’ and will then automatically transfer this incoming Fax call
to your Fax device. You will hear a ‘click’ following the ‘beep’ confirming
that detection has taken place. Simply hang up and FaxSwitch 2 will do
the rest.
This ‘beep’ is known as a CNG tone. They are sent every 3 seconds from
almost all Fax machines. The above procedure will usually take place
within 3 seconds of answering the call. In some areas it may be
necessary to wait for the second CNG tone before hanging up. You will
hear a ‘click’ on the line when the transfer has occurred. Simply hang up,
FaxSwitch 2 will do the rest.
Occasionally you will also answer Manually Dialed Fax calls where the
caller will request your Fax Device. You should ask the caller to press
their Start/Transmit key. FaxSwitch 2 will detect the CNG Tone and
will redirect the incoming call to your Fax Device. You can now hang up.
Alternatively, you can also transfer the incoming caller to your Fax Device
by pressing 3. This command will redirect the incoming call to your Fax
Device. You can now hang up.

OPERATION WHEN OFFICE IS UNATTENDED
OPERATION WITH AN ANSWERING MACHINE
FaxSwitch 2 will always allow your separate answering machine,
connected to any telephone socket, to answer your calls when your site is
unattended. Once the call has been answered, FaxSwitch 2 will then
listen for a CNG Tone, and if detected will redirect this Fax call to your
Fax device and instruct your answering machine to reset. Voice calls are
totally ignored by FaxSwitch 2. It is strongly recommended that you re-
record your ‘Out Going Message’ and leave 3-4 seconds of silence before
speaking. This silence at the beginning of your message will allow
FaxSwitch 2 to detect the first CNG tone without interference from your
message.
This precaution will ensure quick and reliable Fax detection even with
poor line conditions. Some answering machines when located on a
separate telephone socket will not hang up when FaxSwitch 2 takes
the call from it. In this situation, you will need to connect your answering
machine direct to the LINE OUT port outlet of FaxSwitch 2.
OPERATION WITHOUT AN ANSWERING MACHINE
FaxSwitch 2 can be set to DIVERT your incoming calls to your Fax
Machine after 8 rings, so that it can receive a Fax Call when your site is
unattended. However, should the call be a VOICE CALL, then they will
also be answered by your FAX DEVICE.
If you wish to ENABLE this feature, please set:
DIP SWITCH 4 to the ON position.
Because Voice calls can be answered by your Fax Device, we
recommend that users that DO NOT USE an Answering Machine, should
configure FaxSwitch 2 for operation using the Traditional Faxswitch
Method.

INSTALLATION TRADITIONAL FAXSWITCH
When you use only 1 telephone socket
Please refer to the diagram on page 8
SUITABLE FOR USER INSTALLATION.
1. Unplug all equipment from the telephone socket to be used.
2. REMOVE the telephone line cord fitted to your FAX DEVICE (unplug
it from the modular connection on your Fax device).
Using the cable you have just removed, CONNECT the modular end of
this cable to the LINE IN port of FAXSWITCH. The other end of the cable
(with the large Telstra format male plug) should be connected to your
telephone line socket.
Use the supplied Modular-Modular line cord to connect the FAX DEVICE
to the FAX MACHINE port of FaxSwitch 2. If the Fax Machine has
more than 1 port, use the LINE port.
Connect your telephone to the LINE OUT of FaxSwitch 2 using the
supplied cable with female socket. If an answering machine is used, fit
this with the telephone using a double telephone adaptor (not included).
Connect the supplied 12VAC Power Adaptor and then switch it ON.
SET your FAX DEVICE to the AUTOMATIC RECEIVE MODE.
SET your FAX DEVICE to ANSWER on the FEWEST RINGS possible. If
Fax/Phone or FaxSwitch settings are provided on your Fax Device,
ensure that they are DISABLED.
If ADSL or CALLERID is used on this telephone line, please refer to
pages 16-17.
READ THIS USER GUIDE thoroughly to obtain a full understanding of the

INSTALLATION FOR MULTI-STOCKET USE
When you use telephones on more than 1 telephone socket
Please refer to the diagram on page 10
INSTALLATION MUST BE CARRIED OUT BY A QUALIFIED TECHNICIAN
The LINE IN port of FaxSwitch 2 must be wired direct to the incoming
telephone line at your MASTER TELEPHONE SOCKET.
All of your telephones, including all telephones located on different
sockets must be wired direct from the LINE OUT port of FaxSwitch 2.
This is necessary to allow FaxSwitch 2 to ring all telephones.
The Fax Device must be connected to the FAX MACHINE port of
FaxSwitch 2. If the Fax Machine has more than 1 port, use the LINE
port.
This is normally accomplished by fitting a new telephone socket next to
your original telephone socket (or fitting a new telephone socket on top of
your original telephone socket). All telephone extensions are then
transferred to this second telephone socket.
Once this is done, the TELEPHONE LINE IN port of FaxSwitch 2 is
then connected to the original telephone socket. The TELEPHONE LINE
OUT port of FaxSwitch 2 is connected to the new telephone socket.
This procedure should be carried out by an ACMA approved
telephone cabling technician.
If ADSL or Caller ID is used on this line, refer to pages 15-16
