2017 COMPASS QUICK REFERENCE GUIDE

Electric Park Brake (EPB)
Your vehicle is equipped with a new Electric
Park Brake System (EPB) that offers greater
convenience. The park brake switch is located
in the center console.
To apply the park brake manually, pull up on the
switch momentarily. The BRAKE warning lamp
in the instrument cluster and an indicator on
the switch will illuminate.
To release the park brake manually, the ignition
switch must be in RUN. Then put your foot on
the brake pedal and push the park brake switch
down momentarily. Once the park brake is fully
disengaged, the BRAKE warning lamp and the
switch indicator will extinguish.
The park brake can also be automatically re-
leased. With the engine running and the trans-
mission in gear, release the brake pedal and
depress the throttle pedal. For safety reasons,
your seat belt must also be fastened.
NOTE:
• You may hear a slight whirring sound from
the back of the vehicle while the parking
brake engages or disengages.
• If your foot is on the brake pedal while you
are engaging or disengaging the parking
brake, you may notice a small amount of
brake pedal movement.
• The new Auto Park Brake feature can be
used to apply the park brake automatically
every time you park the vehicle. Auto Park
Brake can be enabled and disabled in the
Settings menu in Uconnect.
• The parking brake can be engaged even
when the ignition switch is OFF, however, it
can only be disengaged when the ignition
switch is in the ON/RUN position.
•
SafeHold a new feature that will automatically
apply the park brake under certain conditions.
The EPB monitors the status of the driver’s
seat belt, driver’s door and pedal positions to
determine if the driver may have exited while
the vehicle is still capable of moving and will
then automatically apply the park brake to
prevent the vehicle from rolling.
• The EPB fault lamp will illuminate if the
EPB switch is held for longer than 20 sec-
onds in either the released or applied posi-
tion. The light will extinguish upon releasing
the switch.

STARTING AND OPERATING

Auto Park Brake
The EPB can be programmed to be applied
automatically whenever the vehicle speed is
below 1.9 mph (3 km/h) and the automatic
transmission is placed in PARK, or with a
manual transmission, whenever the ignition
switch is in the OFF position. Auto Park Brake is
enabled and disabled by customer selection
through the Customer Programmable Features
section of the Uconnect Settings.
Any single Auto Park Brake application can be
bypassed by pushing the EPB switch to the
release position while the transmission is
placed in PARK (automatic transmission) and
the ignition is in the ON/RUN position.

SELEC-TERRAIN
Selec-Terrain combines the capabilities of the
vehicle control systems, along with driver input,
to provide the best performance for all terrains.
Mode Selection Guide
Rotate the Selec-Terrain knob to select the
desired mode.
•AUTO: This four-wheel drive operation is a
continuous operation, is fully automatic and
can be used on and off road. This mode
balances traction to ensure maneuverability
and acceleration improvement compared to
a vehicle with two wheel drive. This mode
also reduces fuel consumption, since it al-
lows the disconnect of the drive shaft where
conditions permit.

•SNOW: This mode allows you to have greater
stability under conditions of bad weather.
For use on and off road on surfaces with poor
traction, such as roads covered with snow.
When in SNOW mode (depending on certain
operating conditions), the transmission may
use second gear (rather than first gear) dur-
ing launches, to minimize wheel slippage.
•SAND: For off-road driving or use on surfaces
with poor traction, such as dry sand. The
transmission is set to provide maximum trac-
tion.
•MUD: For off-road driving or use on surfaces
with poor traction, such as roads covered by
mud or wet grass.
•ROCK (Trailhawk only): This mode is only
available in 4WD LOW range. The device
sets the vehicle to maximize traction and
allow the highest steering capacity for off-
road surfaces. This mode gives you the maxi-
mum performance off-road. Use for low
speed obstacles such as large rocks, deep
ruts, etc.
NOTE:
• Rock mode is only available on the vehicles
equipped with the Off-Road package.
• Activate the Hill Descent Control for steep
downhill control. See “Electronic Brake
Control System” in this section for further
information.

ParkSense Rear Park Assist — If
Equipped
• The four ParkSense sensors, located in the
rear fascia/bumper, monitor the area behind
the vehicle that is within the sensor’s field of
view.
• The sensors can detect obstacles from ap-
proximately 12 inches (30 cm) up to
79 inches (200 cm) from the rear bumper
while the vehicle is in REVERSE. When an
obstacle is detected, a warning will display
in the instrument cluster, and a chime will
sound (when Sound and Display is selected
from the Uconnect Settings/Customer Pro-
grammable Features section of the
Uconnect System screen). As the vehicle
moves closer to the object, the chime rate
will change from single 1/2 second tone, to
slow, to fast, to continuous.
• If the system detects a potential impact
with an object, the vehicle brakes may be
applied.

Parkview Rear Back-Up Camera
— If Equipped
You can see an on-screen image of the rear of
your vehicle whenever the transmission is
shifted into REVERSE. The ParkView Rear
Back-Up Camera image will be displayed on the
Uconnect Display, located on the center stack
of the instrument panel.
For further information and applicable warn-
ings and cautions, please refer to your Owner’s
Manual at www.jeep.com/en/owners/manuals.
Blind Spot Monitoring — If
Equipped
The Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) system uses
two radar-based sensors, located inside the rear
bumper fascia, to detect highway licensable
vehicles (automobiles, trucks, motorcycles,
etc.) that enter the blind spot zones from the
rear/front/side of the vehicle.
The BSM warning light, located in the outside
mirrors, will illuminate if a vehicle moves into a
blind spot zone.
Rear Cross Path
The Rear Cross Path (RCP) feature is intended
to aid the driver when backing out of parking
spaces where their vision of oncoming vehicles
may be blocked. Proceed slowly and cautiously
out of the parking space until the rear end of the
vehicle is exposed. The RCP system will then
have a clear view of the cross traffic and if an
oncoming vehicle is detected, alert the driver.
Mode Of Operation
Three selectable modes of operation are
available through the Uconnect System.
For further information and applicable warn-
ings and cautions, please refer to your Owner’s
Manual at www.jeep.com/en/owners/manuals.

PARKVIEW SAFETY FEATURES

Forward Collision Warning With
Mitigation — If Equipped
The Forward Collision Warning (FCW) system
provides the driver with active braking, audible
and visual warnings [within the instrument
cluster display] and may apply a brake jerk to
warn the driver when it detects a potential
frontal collision. The warnings and limited
braking are intended to provide the driver with
enough time to react and avoid or mitigate the
potential collision.
FCW monitors the information from the
forward-looking sensor, as well as the Elec-
tronic Brake Controller (EBC) to calculate a
probable collision. When the system deter-
mines that a collision is probable, a warning
message (both audible and visual) will be dis-
played within the cluster display along with a
brake jerk warning (previously enabled in the
Uconnect Settings). When the system senses
the driver applying the brakes to avoid a prob-
able collision, additional brake force will be
provided to the vehicle. When the system deter-
mines a collision with the vehicle in front of you
is no longer probable, the warning message will
be deactivated.
NOTE:
The FCW feature can be customized and turned
off through the Uconnect System touchscreen.
For further information and applicable warn-
ings and cautions, please refer to your Owner’s
Manual at www.jeep.com/en/owners/manuals.
