GX7000 Series Power Supply Unit
Replacement Instructions
About this document
This document helps you do the following tasks:
vIdentify a failed power supply unit
vRemove the failed power supply unit and replace it with a new power supply unit
vVerify that the replacement power supply unit is working correctly
Best Practice: Replace a failed power supply unit as soon as possible.
Important: Before you proceed with these instructions, please review the IBM Systems Safety Notices
provided in the IBM Media Terms and Conditions CD that is shipped with the GX7000 Series appliance.
Identifying a failed power supply unit
There are two power supply units in the back of the GX7000 Series appliance. The power supply units
can be hot-swapped, so you can replace a single power supply unit without powering down the GX7000
Series appliance.
Understanding the power supply unit LED status
Each power supply unit contains an LED that indicates whether the unit is working as expected,
generally:
vAn LED that is lit green (solid or blinking) indicates that the unit is working as expected.
vAn LED that is lit amber or is not lit (off) indicates that the unit is not working as expected.
Understanding the fault LED status
There are also fault LEDs on the front panel of the appliance that illuminate in amber when there is a
problem with one of the power supply units:
v: The fault LED for the power supply unit that is located in the top slot of the chassis in the back
of the appliance.
v: The fault LED for the power supply unit that is located in the bottom slot of the chassis in the
back of the appliance.
Note: The fault LEDs on the front panel might vary in appearance depending on which GX7000 Series
appliance you are using.

Determining when to replace a power supply unit
Use the following table to determine the status of the power supply units and whether you must replace
one of the units.

the appliance.
The power supply unit
whose fault LED is lit
amber on the front panel of
the appliance has an error.
You must replace the failed
power supply unit.
See the next topic
“Replacing a failed power
supply unit” on page 3 for
replacement instructions.
Not lit amber or off and are not lit
amber on the front panel of
the appliance.
Does the appliance have
power?
Check to make sure the
power cord is connected
correctly to the appliance
and that the appliance is
connected to a working AC
power source.
Not lit amber or off Either or are lit
amber on the front panel of
the appliance.
Does the power supply unit
whose fault LED is lit
amber on the front panel of
the appliance have power?
Check the following to
make sure.
vThe power cord is
connected correctly to the
power supply unit and
to a working AC power
outlet.
vThe power supply unit is
seated correctly in the
appliance and locked in
place.

Replacing a failed power supply unit
Before you begin
When you are replacing a failed power supply unit, make sure that you do not unplug the power supply
unit that is working as this will disrupt service to the GX7000 Series appliance.
Procedure
Do the following steps to replace a failed power supply unit.
1. Unplug the power cord of the failed power supply unit.
2. Remove the power supply unit.
a. Firmly grip handle A of the failed power supply unit while pressing the orange release latch B
toward handle A, and hold the release latch in this position, as shown in Figure 1.
b. Pull the failed power supply unit from the back of the appliance.
3. When fully removed from the back of the appliance, set aside the failed power supply unit.
Attention: Make sure that the gold connectors at the rear of the power supply unit do not come into
contact with your hands or with the packing material as you unpack the replacement power supply
unit. Avoid damaging the gold connectors against the chassis as you insert the replacement power
supply unit.
4. Unpack the replacement power supply unit.
5. Carefully align the replacement power supply unit, and fully insert the power supply unit into the
chassis until you hear the release latch click in place.
6. Plug in the power cord to the replaced power supply unit.

What to do next
After replacing the power supply unit, you can verify that the new power supply unit is working
correctly.
vThe power supply unit LED on the back of the appliance is green (solid or blinking).
vThe fault LED (for the power supply unit that you just replaced) on the front of the appliance is not lit.
