Unpacking
Initialinspectionshouldincludecheckingforphysical
damage during shipping and obvious external damage
to the product.
Packagecontentsaredenedbyyourpackinglist.Each
LoadFrameisconguredaccordingtocustomerspecica-
tions.Inyourinspection,makecertainthatthecontentsof
your shipment match the documentation provided by your
packing list.
Placeunitonaat,smoothsurfaceanduselevelingfeet
(supplied) and a bubble level to ensure that the unit is level
side-to-sideandback-to-front.
Installation and Equipment Setup
Electrical Connections
The HM-5820 is equipped with an internal digital switching
power supply, which allows it to be used with most power
congurationsthroughouttheworld.Theunitissupplied
with an IEC electrical cord with a standard 110V plug.
TheHM-5820arrivesreadyforoperation.Attachthesup-
plied IEC electrical cord to the machine and plug into a
standardwallreceptacleforuseintheUnitedStates.For
locations other than the U.S., replace the supplied electrical
cordwithanIECcordthathasthecorrectplugforyourap-
plication. The supplied cord can also be used by cutting the
standardplugfromthecordandattachingthecorrectplug.
Power Switch
ThePowerSwitchislocatedontheleftsideofthebackof
the machine, above the electrical cord inlet. The Fuse Com-
partment is located between the electrical cord inlet and the
PowerSwitch.TheHM-5820usesa10-ampfuse.Tobegin
operation, attach the supplied electrical cord, plug it in and
press the Power Switch.

Ethernetinputforconnectingmachinetoalocalareanet-
work (LAN) and/or the internet.
USB Power (2)
TheUSBPowerportisusedforpoweringawirelessaccess
applianceforthosewhowanttouseawirelessLANsetup.
Instrument Inputs (3)
Thepanelfeaturesfour(4)inputsforconnectinginstrumentation
tothemachine.Eachinputrepresentsaseparatechannel.Ifyou
havepurchasedinstrumentationfromHumboldtwithyourHM-
5820,ithasbeenassignedtoaspecicchannelandcalibrated.In-
strumentation will have a numbered tag attached to it and should
be plugged into the corresponding input on the machine.

Ifyoupurchasedmultipleloadcellsand/ortransducerswith
your machine, they will either be mounted and calibrated, or
inthecaseofmorethanfour(4)loadcells/transducers,cali-
bratedandassignedtoaspecicinput,butnotmounted.
All instrument connectors will be marked to indicate what
input channel was used in their calibration. Ensure that the
instruments are connected to the indicated channels when
settingthemachineupforuse.Pleasenotethatifyouare
using the HM-5820 in conjunction with Humboldt’s NEXT
testingsoftware,thecalibrationswillneedtobeimported
intothesoftwarebeforeuse.
Belowarephotosofaninstrumentationinputandthe
instrumentation plug. Install the plugs into the inputs by
lininguptheguideatthebottomoftheplugwiththeslot
atthebottomoftheinput.

Third-party instrumentation, which is compatible, can also
beusedwiththeHM-5820.Ifyouplantousethird-party
loadcells,pleaserefertotheEquipmentSetupsectionof
thismanual,page30forinstructions.

Remember, if you purchased Humboldt instrumentation
with your HM-5820, it is already calibrated and assigned
to a channel and will not need calibration, however you
shouldconrmthattheinstrumentationhasbeensetup
and calibrated. If you are using 3rd-party instrumenta-
tion, go to the Equipment Setup section for calibration
instructions.
WhenyourHM-5820isrstturnedon,thescreenbelowwill
appear.
Fromthisscreen,toconrmyourmachineinstrumentationhas
been calibrated, navigate to the Calibration section by clicking
theHomeiconinthetopleftcornerofthescreen.Whenyou
click on this button, you will see a drop-down menu appear.

Calibration Input Screen
The Calibration Input Screen (above) is used to monitor and
calibrateinstrumentationandassignthemtospecicchan-
nelsoftheHM-5820.TheCalibrationInputScreenprovides
asummaryofthecalibrationstatusofeachchannel.Atthis
time,verifythecalibrationinformation.
Agreenboxattheleftofachannelindicatesthatthe
channel has instrumentation assigned to it and that it is
calibratedandreadyforuse(1).

TheHM-5820usesatotalofeightinputsfortesting.
Onthemaincalibrationscreenthisisdividedintotwo
screensforeaseofviewingandinputsettingadjust-
ment. To switch between the screen showing channels
1-4 and the screen showing channels 5-8, click on the
buttonatthebottomofthescreenthatreadseither
INPUTS 1-4 or INPUTS 5-8 (2).

SignicantDigits
This eld displays the current calibration value. This value
should already be set with 3 decimal point accuracy. If the in-
strument is not calibrated, the unit will read “N/A.” To change
the numbers of decimals shown, click on the eld
and the following window will appear. Fill in the number of
decimal points desired (1).

Eachchannelhasa“LimitsOn”checkbox(1).Usethe
“LimitsOn”tokeepthemachinefromexceedingthesensor
limitsoftheinstrumentation.Byselectingthisoption,before
thetestcanexceedthelimitsofthesensorsalltestswill
stop running and the motor will stop to avoid damaging
connected instrumentation.
Units (2)
InUnitseldacalibratedinstrumentwilldisplaytheunitsof
measurethatwerechosenforuseatthetimeofcalibration.
TheunitsofmeasurecanbetoggledbetweenEnglishand
SI units as desired.
Value (3)
Thiselddisplaysthecurrentcalibrationvalue.Thisvalue
shouldalreadybesetwith3decimalaccuracy.Iftheinstru-
mentisnotcalibrated,theunitwillread“N/A.”Tochange
thenumbersofdecimalsshown,clickontheeldanda
windowwillappearlikebelow.Fillinthenumberofdeci-
mals desired.
Note: An input cannot be calibrated during testing.
