Cluster Configuration Guide
21 March 2001
(see Versions at the end of this document)
Introduction
This document defines the supported HP NetServer LP2000r configurations using the HP Rack Storage/12FC
and MicrosoftCluster Server. These configurations minimize single points of failure (SPOF, SPOFless1) and
provide extended availability. The specific configuration certified and supported by both Hewlett-Packard and
Microsoftis defined, as are other guidelines to assist you in configuring your clustered NetServers. This
guide is prescriptive; it describes the configurations supported by HP. Any deviance to these configurations can
result in an inoperative cluster or an operating cluster with degraded performance, hidden SPOFs, etc., and
therefore will not be supported by HP.
What's Defined in a Racked Cluster
• Cluster
• SPUs
• Local and Shared Storage
• Intra-cluster and Client LANs
• Shared Storage Cabling
Cluster
Type of SPUs HP NetServer LP2000r
Each node must be the same SPU, but may have different clock speeds,
main memory sizes, cache sizes, and number of CPUs .
Number of nodes 2
Shared Storage HP Rack Storage/12FC with 2 FCArray Cards, HP disks, and using an
HP D8602B HBA in each server. See Shared Storage below.
LANs:
Client LAN Any NIC that is HP and Microsoftapproved. See Client LAN below.
For a SPOFless cluster, two D5013B NICs configured with AFT is
recommended (Add one NIC and pair with embedded).
1For more information about configuring a SPOFless cluster, refer to the HP white paper, High Availability
MSCS Cluster Solution on the HP NetServers, HA Planning website.
2
Intra-cluster
(Heartbeat) LAN Embedded NIC with crossover cable, or, configure as a VLAN through an
Ethernet switch. See Intra-cluster LAN below.
Power source Direct from power mains, power conditioner or uninterruptible power
supply (UPS) using any power conditioner or UPS. Redundant power
distribution units (PDU’s) are strongly recommended.
System software:
Navigator version L.20.00 or later

SPU
Model HP NetServer LP2000r
Clock speed 1 GHz
No. of CPUs 2
BIOS version 4.06.16 or later
CPU cache Any size
RAM 256 MB minimum. Must be HP.
Local storage See Local Storage below.
I/O slots Added cards may be installed in any appropriate slot, keeping in mind
the server's default boot order as listed below:
Default Boot Order IDE CD-ROM, FDD, PCI-1, PCI-2, PCI-3, Embedded SCSI

Local
Controller May use embedded SCSI, NetRAID-1Si, NetRAID-3Si, NetRAID-1M,
or NetRAID-2M
For SPOFless, recommend NetRAID-xM with internal drives in RAID-
5, or another fault-tolerant RAID level.
Driver For embedded SCSI, use SYM_U3.SYS, version 5.07.00 or later.
For NetRAID-xSi, use MRAID35X.SYS, version 2.66 or later.
For NetRAID-xM, use MRAID2K.SYS version 5.20 (Navigator L.20.00
or later)
Cabinets (Physical drive
location) SPU internal drive bays or HP external drive cabinet (e.g., HP Rack
Storage/12), any number.
Disk drives Must be HP (hot swap or fixed).
SCSI bus Any HP cables that meet SCSI specifications and any SCSI bus speed.

3
RAID level 0, 1, 3, 5, 10
For SPOFless configurations, a fault-tolerant RAID type, e.g. RAID 5, is
recommended for all shared storage.
Cabinet HP Rack Storage 12/FC – D5991A
RAID arrays Not more than 8 physical drives per logical array and not more than 8
LUNs are permitted per cluster.
