Recovery Process

When you install new software or drivers, or if you have accidentally deleted

important files from your operating system, you may find that your PC does not work

properly anymore.

Your Compaq Presario is equipped with a variety of tools to help you to recover from

software problems.

• You can back up an existing system and restore your PC to exactly the same

configuration later. It is very useful to do this after you have personalised your

PC settings.

• You can restore specific Compaq drivers for graphic cards, audio cards,

modems etc.

• You can restore your PC back to factory settings.

To make this possible, your hard drive is divided into 2 partitions. The C: partition

contains the operating system, applications you have installed, and your personal

documents.

The D: partition contains the files which are necessary to restore your PC. After

booting, a menu is presented with the different restore options. Simply follow the

online guidelines.

IMPORTANT: If you want to make use of Compaq’s advanced software recovery tools, it is

essential not to delete any files from the D: partition. To be even safer, you should not store any

user files or programs on the D: partition.

Recovery CD and Quick Restore Tools

There are two ways to use the Quick Restore tools. If you run into a software problem

and Microsoft Windows is still starting (i.e. you get a working Windows desktop

after you started up your PC), you can click the Compaq Help icon on the desktop.

A menu comes up with the list of restoring options as described in your user

documentation.

English

In instances when your PC is not starting anymore (i.e. there is no Windows desktop)

you can also put the Recovery CD in the drive (CD-ROM, CD-RW or DVD-ROM)

and simply restart your PC.

IMPORTANT: Make sure you store the Recovery CD in a safe place, as you may need it in the

future!

Compaq Recovery CD

The Compaq Recovery CD enables you to restore your system files from a separate

partition on your hard drive. The four options on the Recovery CD are listed below.

Recovery CD Options

Restore Option Description

Emergency Recovery

Diskette

Creating this diskette is important as it allows you to save your

computer’s unique setup information. Store the diskette in a

safe place.

User Backup Backs up all information and files, including the Operating

System, on your hard drive and stores them in a separate

partition on your drive.

User Restore Restores your hard drive to the state it was in at your last

User Backup.

Factory Restore Restores your computer to its original factory-installed software

state.

IMPORTANT: If your system has more than one optical drive (CD-ROM, CD-RW,

DVD-ROM), only one may be bootable. If the CD does not boot automatically, try putting

the CD in the other drive.

English

Factory Restore

Factory Restore returns your computer to its original factory-installed software

configuration. This option reformats the C: partition of your hard drive and removes

all data from your computer.

CAUTION: Factory Restore deletes all of the information and data stored

on the C: partition of your computer’s hard drive. All added personal files,

software, and other data will be lost. Before completing Factory Restore,

copy your data to diskettes or save your data to an external device to

prevent permanent loss of your data.

To complete a Factory Restore on your computer, perform the following steps:

1. Insert your Compaq Recovery CD into your CD-ROM, CD-RW, or

DVD-ROM drive.

2. Turn off your computer by clicking the Start button; click on Turn

Off Computer. The Turn Off Computer dialog box is displayed.

3. Select Turn Off option, and the system powers down.

4. Turn on your computer by pressing the power button on the front of

your computer. The system reboots and the Compaq Recovery CD

Menu is displayed.

5. Select menu option number 4 for Factory Restore.

IMPORTANT: If menu option number 4 says “No Factory Image found”, you would need

the Quick Restore CDs to perform a Factory Restore.

CAUTION: If you have not copied or backed up your personal files,

software, or other data onto diskettes to be recopied onto the C: partition of

your hard drive, they will be lost after you press Enter to select menu

item 4.

6. The Compaq licensing agreement is now displayed. Press Enter to

accept.

7. You are prompted that continuing this procedure will delete the data

on your hard drive. Press Enter if you wish to continue. The Factory

Restore process may take approximately 30 minutes.

8. The CD tray opens automatically, and you are prompted to remove

the Compaq Recovery CD. Remove the CD from the CD-ROM,

CD-RW, or DVD-ROM drive.

9. Follow the on-screen instructions to continue.

English

10. Once the Factory Restore is complete, you may be prompted to

provide the startup information again to reinstall Windows.

11. Follow the prompts to restore your computer to its original factory

condition.

Exiting the Compaq Recovery CD

After loading the Recovery CD, if you choose not to complete any of the options, it

will be necessary to restart your computer. Perform the following steps to exit the

Recovery CD:

1. From the Compaq Recovery CD Menu, select 5 (Exit) by pressing the

number 5 key on your keyboard.

2. The CD tray opens automatically, and you are prompted to remove

the Compaq Recovery CD. Remove the CD from the CD-ROM,

CD-RW, or DVD-ROM drive.

3. Press Enter to restart your computer.

IMPORTANT: Do not leave your computer unattended while the Recovery CD is running.

You are periodically required to enter information. If you do not enter the required

information, your computer may not complete the recovery process.

Before you perform any restore or backup tasks, we recommend that you create an

Emergency Recovery Diskette.

Creating an Emergency Recovery Diskette

5. From the Compaq Recovery CD Menu, select 1 (Create Emergency

Diskette) by pressing the number 1 key on your keyboard.

English

6. You are prompted to insert a blank, formatted, 3½ inch diskette.

Insert a diskette into the diskette drive and press Enter.

7. When the Compaq Recovery CD finishes creating the Emergency

Diskette, remove the diskette from the drive, label it and store it in a

safe place for emergency use.

IMPORTANT: Label your diskette “Compaq Emergency Recovery Diskette” so that it is

easy to locate in the event of a system emergency.

8. Press Enter to return to the Compaq Recovery CD Menu.

9. To exit the Compaq Recovery CD Menu, select 5 (Exit) by pressing

the number 5 key on your keyboard.

10. The CD tray opens automatically, and you are prompted to remove

the Compaq Recovery CD. Remove the CD from the CD-ROM,

CD-RW, or DVD-ROM drive.

11. Press Enter to restart your computer.

NOTE: The Emergency Recovery Diskette that you create is for recovery only. It contains

information about the configuration of your system only and cannot be used for Windows

start-up. This diskette is required if you install a new hard drive or if you have to restore

your computer with the Quick Restore CDs.

User Backup

User Backup backs up all the information and files on your hard drive and stores

them in a separate partition on your drive for later use. Complete a User Backup to

protect your personal files and data.

To complete a User Backup, perform the following steps:

English

5. From the Compaq Recovery CD Menu, select 2 (User Backup) by

pressing the number 2 key on your keyboard. The backup process

takes several minutes.

NOTE: If the hard drive partition does not have enough space to store the User Backup,

you may be prompted to increase the size of this partition. Answer Yes to complete the

User Backup. Be aware that drive C will be correspondingly reduced in size.

6. The CD tray opens automatically, and you are prompted to remove

the Compaq Recovery CD. Remove the CD from the CD-ROM,

CD-RW, or DVD-ROM drive.

7. Press Enter to restart your computer.

User Restore

IMPORTANT: You must have performed a User Backup at least once to use this option.

User Restore restores your system to the configuration saved the last time you

completed User Backup. The User Restore option is not used as often as User

Backup, and should only be performed when you need to restore your system to its

last User Backup condition.

To complete a User Restore, perform the following steps:

5. From the Compaq Recovery CD Menu, select 3 (User Restore) by

pressing the number 3 key on your keyboard.

NOTE: If menu option number 3 says “No User Information found” this means that you

have not yet performed a User Backup. You are unable to perform a User Restore unless

you have performed at least one User Backup.

English

6. Press Enter to continue. The User Restore process may take

approximately 30 minutes.

7. The CD tray opens automatically, and you are prompted to remove

the Compaq Recovery CD. Remove the CD from the CD-ROM,

CD-RW, or DVD-ROM drive.

8. Press Enter to restart your computer.

Ordering a free copy of Compaq “QuickRestore”

Software Tools on CD

As described in the previous pages, the majority of Compaq Quick Restore tools may

be accessed using the Recovery CD.

Only if you delete these pre-installed tools from your hard drive, or in the unlikely

event that your hard drive fails, would you need the Quick Restore tools on CD.

1. Before calling your local Presario call centre, identify your model and serial

number on the side, back or base of your Compaq PC and have it ready. This

is important as the QuickRestore software tools are specific to your model

of Presario.

2. Call your local Technical Support Centre (see telephone numbers listed below) and

request a QuickRestore CD. Note: national rates apply except as indicated.

CAUTION: Any files, programs, and data installed or created after your

last User Backup will be deleted after you press Enter.
