This thermometer re ds skin surface temper ture
nd extrapolates body temper ture from th t
re ding. It does not re d body temper ture directly.
All non-cont ct infr red thermometers th t me sure
body temper ture work this w y.
To get n ccur te re ding, point the thermometer
t the side of the forehe d or behind the e r where
the skin temper ture tends to be const nt.
Th t skin temper ture will lw ys be t le st sever l
degrees lower th n core body temper ture, for
ex mple 92°F/33.3°C. A “body” or “forehe d”
infr red thermometer estim tes core body
temper ture from the skin surf ce temper ture
re ding.
So inste d of displ ying, for ex mple “92°F/33.3°C”,
the ctu l surf ce temper ture of the forehe d, it
pplies formul to this re ding to c lcul te body
temper ture, nd displ ys for ex mple
“98.3°F/36.8°C”. This is n estimate of core body
temper ture b sed on the typical average
rel tionship between forehe d surf ce temper ture
nd core body temper ture.

3
Skin surf ce temper ture c n nd does fluctuate
nd this m y signific ntly imp ct the re ding. For
ex mple, exposure to hot or cold we ther c n c use
the forehe d temper ture to be higher or lower, nd
the derived nd displ yed core body temper ture
will be off.
The two most import nt points to underst nd re
1) body temper ture displ yed by this thermometer
is n estimate derived from skin temperature, nd
2) skin temper ture c n nd does fluctuate b sed on
ambient temperature and other factors, nd will
ch nge the thermometer’s body temper ture
re ding. This me ns for best results, temper ture
should be t ken t room temper ture when subjects
re t rest. Also, multiple re dings should be t ken
to find n ver ge.
