Chapter 1: Before you begin
DHCP Option 43 configuration
The WLAN 8100 solution requires configuration of DHCP Option 43 to ensure proper operation
of access points and the solution overall. This configuration should be performed before
attempting any operations that require network connectivity between the controller and access
points.
Configuration is dependent on the type of DHCP server in use in the network environment.
Avaya recommends the use of either a Windows 2003 Server or Linux-based DHCP server.
If a Windows 2003 DHCP server is in use, perform the following actions:
1. Open the DHCP Server Manager.
2. Select DHCP > <your-DHCP-server> > Scope > Scope Option > Option 043.
3. Configure Sub-Option 8 as AVAYA AP with hexadecimal values for domain
controller IP addresses. A UDP port for communications can also be optionally
specified.
4. Click OK.
If a Linux DHCP server is in use, perform the following actions:
1. Edit dhcpd.conf (/root/dhcp.conf).
2. Configure Sub-Option 8 as AVAYA AP with hexadecimal values for domain
controller IP addresses. A UDP port for communications can also be optionally
specified.
3. Restart dhcpd.
For example, a Linux entry for Option 43 with controller addresses 192.168.11.2 and
192.168.11.3 and using port 61000 would break down as follows:

The access point will use UDP port 61000 by default if Option 43 does not include the UDP
port number.
Access Point and Controller Discovery
The WLAN 8100 solution supports DHCP-assisted discovery and DNS-assisted discovery of
the controllers by the AP. The AP does not provide any interface for static configuration of the
network parameters such as IP address, subnet, default gateway, DNS or domain name. A
DHCP server must be configured in the network to assign these network parameters to the AP.
The AP obtains information about up to 4 controllers in the mobility domain from DHCP option
43 or DNS queries. For information on DHCP server configuration, refer to Avaya WLAN 8100
Quick Start Guide (NN47251–106).
If DHCP option 43 is not configured, the AP attempts to make DNS queries to resolve the
controller IP address. For the query the controller host name is assumed to be “wc1”, “wc2”,
“wc3” and “wc4”. A fully qualified domain name is used whenever the DHCP response specifies
the domain name. Otherwise, unqualified controller host names are used. DHCP responses
should specify DNS server for the DNS assisted discovery mechanism.
Administrator must configure either “DHCP option 43” or DNS so that AP can obtain the IP
addresses of at least one active controller in the mobility domain. For redundancy in the
discovery process we recommend configuring at least two controllers on DHCP server or DNS.
When both DHCP option 43 and DNS servers are configured, an AP attempts connection with
controller IP’s determined from DHCP options before attempting to connect to those
determined from DNS queries.
The access points will do a DHCP query again if they cannot obtain a controller IP from DHCP/
DNS or do not get any response from the controller IP determined from the DHCP/DNS. This
allows the administrator to recover from incorrect configuration of DHCP server or DNS.
A controller accepts an AP only when the MAC address of the AP is present in the domain AP
table of the controller and there are AP licenses available. If the AP MAC address is not
configured in the domain AP table of the controller then the AP is reported as a newly
discovered AP to the active MDC and it should show up in the discovered AP table. However,
only AP(s) that have been configured to be part of domain AP table can be managed by the
mobility domain.
From the perspective of the controller, the AP has the following states:
• Discovered – AP has sent a connection request to the controller and controller validated
the AP against the domain AP table.
• Authenticated – AP has authenticated with the controller and in the process of applying
configuration received from the controller.
• Managed – AP has successfully applied the configuration and its radios are not
operational.
• Failed – An AP that was previously managed by the controller has left the controller.

A controller can re-direct an AP to another controller based on configuration of preferred
controllers for the AP or load balancing criteria.
Access Point 8120
For information on the PoE, Ethernet, and LAN connectivity requirements of the Access Point
8120, refer to Avaya WLAN 8100, Installation–AP 8120 (NN47251–302). This document is part
of the WLAN 8100 documentation suite and is available for download from the technical
support web site.
Creating a console connection
When a WC 8180 is first installed or restored to default settings, the user must connect to the
device through a console cable to perform initial configuration with a terminal emulation
program. Once a device has enough configuration to be reached through the network, it can
be managed through the management IP address. The following table lists the terminal
connection parameters necessary to make such a connection.

Installing WMS
This procedure is used to install the WLAN Management System (WMS). Avaya recommends
and supports installing WMS on Windows Server 2003 or Windows 2008. Installation on a
computer running Windows XP SP2 or later may work but is not recommended or supported.
1. Download the latest version of the WMS application.
2. Enter the installation path in the field provided. If not value is entered, the default
path will be used.
3. Click Next.

4. WMS will install a version of MySQL to support database operations. Use of an
existing MySQL installation is possible but not recommended. Leave the Use
existing MySQL server check box unselected unless you are an advanced MySQL
administrator.
5. Click Next.
6. The WMS installer can detect if there any conflicts between the ports it uses by
default and those already in use on the server. If conflicts exist, the user will be
prompted to enter new port values.
7. Click Next.
8. Confirm installation options.
9. Click Finish.
Launching WMS
This procedure is used to launch WMS from a web browser.
1. Ensure WMS is installed and running on the designated server.
2. On the client computer, open a new web browser instance. Avaya recommends
using either Firefox or IE 8.
3. Type https://<ip_address_of_server> in the Address bar of the browser.
4. Press Enter.
5. Log into WMS.
The default user name and password combination is admin / admin.
Basic controller configuration
Perform the following procedure to place a basic configuration on a WC 8180 device:

1. Log into the controller. If this is the first time accessing the device, connect a console
cable and start a terminal session using the guidelines provided in the
documentation.
2. Press CTRL + Y on the keyboard to enter the CLI.
3. Enter Privileged mode using the enable command.
4. Enter General Configuration mode using the configure terminal command.
5. Specify the system IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway using the ip
address command. This command has the following syntax:
ip address <ip_address> netmask <subnet_mask> default-
gateway <default_gateway>
6. Enable SNMP services using the command snmp-server enable.
7. Disable SNMP user lists using the command no ipmgr snmp.
8. Enable IP routing capabilities using the ip routing command.
9. Enter Wireless Configuration mode using the wireless command.
10. Specify the wireless IP address using the command interface-ip
<ip_address> command.
11. Enable wireless capabilities using the enable command.
12. Enable MDC capability using the controller mdc-capable.
13. Enter the domain password at the prompt.

Creating a VLAN
Use the following procedure to create a VLAN. A VLAN is created by setting the state of a
previously nonexistent VLAN.
To create a VLAN, use the following command from Global Configuration mode.
