2. TYPICAL APPLICATION
2.1. Digital sna e (32 channels) with ADX-32B
The diagram below how a typical application of the ADX device : One Cat5 cable i u ed for both the
tran mi ion of 24 channel from the tage to the mix con ole, and 8 channel in the oppo ite direction. All 32
channel are al o fed into a monitor con ole and into a multi-track recorder. The additional MIDI tran mi ion
capability allow remote control of the device (e.g. the multi-track recorder, or the gain control of the preamp).

3. IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTES
3.1. Cat5 connections
U e the Cat5 cable ONLY between ADX device .
NEVER connect an ADAT Multicore Extender to any Ethernet networking device (PC, Switch, other
network equipment)! The ADX device and/or the networking device may be DAMAGED!
4. INTRODUCTION
4.1. Features
The ADAT Multicore Extender (ADX) allow you to extend and bundle everal ADAT connection into tandard
Cat5 cable, covering up to 100m (330ft) in di tance. One Cat5 cable carrie up to four ADAT connection (32
channel ), one channel of MIDI data, and a wordclock ignal.
Thi make the ADX a perfect co t-effective digital nake y tem. It eamle ly integrate with indu try tandard
ADAT equipment and provide a lightweight replacement for bulky and heavy analog multicore .
Thank to it dai y-chain capability, it can al o erve a di tribution backbone for monitoring or recording.
The ADX y tem i uperior to an analog nake in many way :
Improved sound quality and reliability
No noi e, hum, crackling etc. thank to digital tran mi ion and galvanic i olation
Very low latency (<1µ )
Redundant power upply (optional)
Preci ion clock recovery for be t jitter performance
Quality product „Made in Switzerland“
Versatile connectivity
Up to 8 ADAT connection for the tran mi ion 64 channel
Direction can be et individually for every ADAT connection
Dai y-chaining po ible for ea y ignal plitting and di tribution
Local loop-back duplicate input on the output , no plitter needed
Bi-directional MIDI tran mi ion (two bi-directional channel in the ADX-64B-PRO)
Wordclock di tribution over CAT5
Wordclock ignal extraction from ADAT derive a coaxial wordclock ignal from any ADAT data tream.
Thi i e pecially u eful if your ma ter clock ha no BNC output

4.3. Input and Return channel configuration
The y tem i de igned with maximum flexibility in mind: The direction of data tran mi ion can be elected
individually for each ADAT connection. Thu , the ADX-32B can be operated in 32/0, 24/8, 16/16, 8/24 or 0/32
TX/RX channel configuration, and the ADX-64B-PRO can be configured to 64/0, 56/8, 48/16 etc. to 0/64 of TX/RX
channel .
4.4. Daisy-chaining
For audio di tribution to everal place , up to 32 ADAT Multicore Extender can be dai y-chained together. Thi
feature can be u ed for complex etup , e.g. multi-room audio di tribution or the connection of additional
monitoring equipment. Each ignal input can be located at an arbitrary ADX device in the chain, and i then
di tributed to all other ADX device . Thi allow very flexible etup for recording and monitoring.

OFF No ignal
ON ADAT ignal detected, valid ma ter clock detected, „clock cleaning“ active
Blin ing ADAT ignal detected but no valid ma ter clock . No tran mi ion po ible!
Plea e make ure that you have
•an ADAT ignal coming from the clock ma ter on ADAT1, and DIP witch 6 i et to „OUT“
or
•an external wordclock ignal connected to the WORDCLOCK jack, and DIP witch 6 i et to „IN“
Jack “A” and “B” are electrically paralleled.

The witch “Termination” mu t be et depending on the the number of cable plugged in:
1 cable = “ON”, 2 cable = “OFF”. If you u e only two device (point-to-point connection), the termination
mu t alway remain witched on.
Wrong termination etting are, depending on the cable length, not alway immediately noticeable and
the y tem appear to function properly. But reliability and immunity to noi e i ignificantly decrea ed,
becau e either ignal reflection occur with mi ing termination or tran mitter get overloaded by too
many termination .
If you're u ing the y tem in the ame etup all time, you may u e cotch tape to fix the pu h button (or
remove the pu h button cap) in order to prevent unwanted operation.
NOTE: Redundant connection (the connection of two unit with two cable over A and B at the ame time) are
not upported! Thi would lead to ignal loop cau ing undefined current flow.

7.1. POWER Connections
Connect the supplied DC adapter(s) here.
The input „SECONDARY POWER“ i only available in the ADX-64B-PRO and allow you to connect a econd
(redundant) power upply. Both power upplie work independently, and if one of them fail , the other one
take over. Thi i particularly u eful to make the y tem immune to failure of a ingle AC pha e in 3-pha e
upplie . The tatu of the re pective upply i hown on the corre ponding front panel “Power” LED .
U e only the upplied DC adapter, or a replacement with the indicated voltage, power, polarity and matching
connector ( ee 12. Specification ). The input ha a rever e-polarity protection.
7.2. ADAT 1-4
The transmission direction (TX or RX) must be set using the DIP switches 1-4:
Input (DIP witch in lower po ition = OFF): The ADAT connection i configured a input,
the received data i ent to the Cat5 cable.
The input ignal i pa ed-through to the output along ide ("local loop-back"). You can u e thi
output to connect additional monitor or a wordclock ource, a hown in7.2. Synchronization
over ADAT.
If you're u ing a dai y-chain of ADX device , make ure that there i exactly one “Input” per ADAT connection
in the chain.
Output (DIP witch in upper po ition = ON): The ADAT connection i configured a output.
Data received from the Cat5 cable i output on the “Output” jack. The input jack i inactive.

7.3. ADAT 5-8 (ADX-64B-PRO only)
The transmission direction (TX or RX) for channels 5-8 must be set using the DIP switches 1-4
( ee 6.2. ADAT 1-4).
7.4. MIDI1
The ADX can tran mit MIDI in a bi-directional way. Becau e thi feature make u e of the „U er Bit“ in the ADAT
data tream, a valid ADAT ignal in the ame tran mi ion direction i required. The ADX pick the fir t ADAT
connection which i et to „IN“ for the MIDI TX, and the fir t ADAT connection which i et to „OUT“ for the MIDI
RX:
If you want to end MIDI data, at lea t one of the ADAT connection 1-4 mu t be et to „IN“ and mu t carry a
valid ignal
If you want to receive MIDI data, at lea t one of the ADAT connection 1-4 mu t be et to „OUT“ and mu t
carry a valid ignal
7.5. MIDI2
Work like MIDI1, except that ADAT5 i u ed for data tran mi ion.
If you want to end MIDI data, at lea t one of the ADAT connection 5-8 mu t be et to „IN“ and mu t carry a
