ABOUT THIS GUIDE
Congratulations on your purchase of the 8-Port 10/100Mbps Fast
Ethernet Switch with 4 PoE Ports. This Switch integrates 100Mbps
Fast Ethernet and 10Mbps Ethernet connections in a highly flexible
package. The Switch also has four Power over Ethernet (PoE) ports
which automatically detect the presence of IEEE 802.3af-compliant
powered devices (PD) and provide up to 15.4W of power to the device.
Common PoE devices include WLAN access points, IP phones, and
IP cameras. The Switch will automatically detect the network
appliance’s requirements, and supply the required power to each
appliance.
Purpose
This guide discusses how to install your 8-Port 10/100Mbps Fast
Ethernet Switch with 4-Port PoE.
Terms/Usage
In this guide, the term “Switch” (first letter upper case) refers to your
8-Port 10/100Mbps Fast Ethernet Switch with 4-Port PoE and
“switch” (first letter lower case) refers to other Ethernet switches.

INTRODUCTION
This chapter describes the features of the 8-Port 10/100Mbps Fast
Ethernet Switch with 4-Port PoE and some background information
about Ethernet/Fast Ethernet, Switching and Power over Ethernet
technology.
Fast Ethernet Technology
The growing importance of LANs and the increasing complexity of
desktop computing applications are fueling the need for high
performance networks. 100BASE-T (Fast Ethernet) provides a non-
disruptive, smooth evolution from the current 10BASE-T technology.
100Mbps Fast Ethernet is a standard specified by the IEEE 802.3
LAN committee. It is an extension of the 10Mbps Ethernet standard
with the ability to transmit and receive data at 100Mbps, while
adhering to the CSMA/CD Ethernet protocol. Since 100Mbps Fast
Ethernet is compatible with all other 10Mbps Ethernet environments,
it allows for a straightforward upgrade and takes advantage of the
existing investment in hardware, software, and personnel training.
Power over Ethernet (PoE)
Power over Ethernet (PoE) combines power and data onto one single
cabling infrastructure, eliminating the need to have AC power
available at all locations.
Using PoE, power and data are carried on the same cable. Category 5
or higher cables up to 328 feet (100 meters) must be used, and PoE
will provide power to any 802.3af compliant PoE device, such as IP
telephones, wireless LAN access points and IP security cameras.
PoE is already widely adopted in the market, saving installation costs
by eliminating the need to install separate electrical wiring and outlets.

UNPACKING AND INSTALLATION
This chapter provides unpacking and installation information for the
Switch.
Unpacking
Open the box containing the Switch and carefully unpack its contents.
The carton should contain the following items:
One 8-Port 10/100Mbps Fast Ethernet Switch with 4 PoE Ports
One AC power adapter
Four rubber feet
User’s Guide
If an item is found to be missing or damaged, please contact your local
reseller for a replacement.
Installation
Ensure the following before installing your switch:
The surface must support at least 3.3 lbs (1.5 kg) for the Switch.
The power outlet should be within 6 feet (1.82 meters) of the
Switch.
Visually inspect the DC power jack and make sure that it is fully
secured to the power adapter.
Make sure that there is proper heat dissipation from and
adequate ventilation around the Switch. Do not place heavy
objects on the Switch.

8
Connecting Network Cable
The Switch supports 8 10/100M Ethernet ports with ports 1 through 4
supporting PoE. These PoE ports will automatically activate when a
compatible terminal is connected, and the Switch will supply power
through the Ethernet port to the connected PoE powered device (PD).
For the Legacy devices that are not compatible with PoE, the PoE port
will not supply power to the port. This feature allows users to freely
and safely mix legacy and PoE compatible devices on their network.
The Switch supports 10Mbps Ethernet and 100Mbps Fast Ethernet
and it runs both in half and full duplex mode using two pair of
Category 5 cable.
These RJ-45 ports are Auto-MDI type port. The Switch can auto
transform to am MDI-II or MDI-X type, so you do not have to worry
about whether you are using a standard or crossover RJ-45 cable.
