3. Getting Started with Android
Before turning on your tablet you should ensure that it has been charged for at least 6 hours. It’s also
recommended to charge the device for over 12 hours on the first charge.
3a. Turning on and unlocking
To turn on the device hold the power button in for approximately 3 seconds and release. The device will
turn on and you should see the Android logo on the screen. After a short while you should see the lock
screen, which will look similar to this:
To unlock the device put your finger on the lock button (the pad lock) and slide towards the opposite side
of the screen.
3b. Home Screen
After unlocking the device you will reach the home screen. This is the main screen on your device; it’s
similar to the ‘desktop’ on your computer. There is more than one home screen; you can change between
them by swiping/dragging your finger to the left or right. To quickly get back to the original (main) home
screen you can hit the Home button (on the right hand side of the device). Please note due to variations in
the Android software your home screen may not look exactly as below.

On the home screen(s) you can have shortcuts to your favourite things such as apps, websites, contacts,
etc. You can also put widgets on these screens. Widgets come in all shapes and sizes and fulfil various
functions. For example, you can have a Google search widget so you can quickly search Google for
anything, you can have a weather widget to show the next week’s forecast or you could have a music
controller widget to quickly skip, pause and play your music. You can discover lots of amazing apps and
widgets on the Android Marketplace, more on this later. The other thing you can have on your home screen
is folders. Just like your PC, you can put multiple shortcuts inside each folder to keep things a little more
organised.
To add a shortcut, widget or folder to the home screen, simply press an empty space on the home screen
for approximately 3 seconds, a menu will appear like this:

From here you simply tap on the option you want and continue through the steps and add it to the home
screen.
To move a shortcut, widget or folder from the home screen, simply hold the icon for approximately 3
seconds until it becomes ‘unlocked’ from its position and move it to the place you wish.
To delete a shortcut, widget or folder from the home screen, simply hold the icon for approximately 3
seconds until it becomes ‘unlocked’ from its position and move it to the ‘trash can’ which can usually be
found on the right hand side of the screen.
3c. Status Bar Icons
Below are the different kinds of icons you will see in the status bar (the grey bar at the top of the screen)
along with the definition of what they mean. Please note, since Android is primarily a phone software,
some of the icons will not be relevant to your tablet.

In the notifications area you can view all recent notifications and if you wish to remove them just hit the
clear button.
The toggles can be situated at the top or bottom of the screen. To turn a feature on/off, simply tap the
toggle. For example, to turn on WiFi just tap the WiFi icon, after a second or 2 the icon will turn a different
colour and the feature will be activated.
