Introduction 1

About This Manual

This manual provides detailed procedures for configuring, troubleshooting, and servicing

Thermo Electron MicroXR x-ray fluorescence measurement tools. While it is primarily

intended as a reference for Thermo Electron service personnel and certified in-house service

technicians, all readers will find a great deal of useful information about MicroXR operation,

design, performance and system diagnostics contained herein.

This chapter takes a brief look at the overall organization of the main manual and

supplementary documentation.

All readers should take the time to review Chapter 2, Safety before attempting to perform any

of the periodic maintenance or service procedures detailed in this manual! (See warning,

below.)

With the exception of the periodic system maintenance procedures detailed

Chapter 8 (Maintenance & Component Replacement) of this manual, customers

should never attempt to adjust, remove or repair MicroXR system components

unless they have received specific training and certification from Thermo

Electron. Doing so may risk exposure to X-ray, electrical, temperature and other

physical hazards, and may void the terms of the warranty agreement!

1.1: Service Documentation - Overview

1.1.1: Manual Volumes

The service manual is organized into one primary and three supplemental volumes, as

follows:

Volume 1: MicroXR Service Manual

Main volume, providing system overviews, theory of operation and all major setup,

adjustment, troubleshooting and maintenance procedures. (See section 1.1.1.)

Volume 2: MicroXR Software Reference (CD-ROM)

A compilation of useful XPert Analysis-related reference material, including: revision

histories and release notes; installation/configuration details; known bugs and fixes;

miscellaneous utilities and third-party application information.

Volume 3: Technical Bulletins (CD-ROM)

Supplemental system documentation including technical notes, new and updated features,

component design changes and miscellaneous procedures.

Volume 4: Assembly & Schematics Packages

Contact Thermo Electron Customer Service for information on obtaining the following
