ARCHITECTURE MIXER

Before we begin to use the controls and sliders in the

mixer, you should have a basic knowledge of the components of

the mixer and the signal ow between the various components.

Without those basics, you might give the impression that some

controls operate incorrectly or not work: there may be another

tight control to a position inconsistent.

Apartfromthat,therearesometermsthatshouldfamiliarizethemselves

with,andtobeusedrepeatedlythroughoutthisusermanual.

CHANNELS

Achannelisamixersectionthatprocessesasingleaudiosignal.

Giventhatthemixerhastwochannels.Despitesignsthatbothchannels

enteringthesamemixer,remainseparateintheirrespectivechannels,

allowingprocessindependentlybeforemixinginonechannel:the

Audience.

GAIN

Whenasignalofanaudiochannelentersamixer,therstthingyoudo

isgothroughthegaincontrol.

Thiscontrolincreasesordecreasesthevolumeofincomingaudio

signal,asaresultofwhichmayincreasethevolumeofsongscasualties

orreducethelevelofthehighest.Thisisanessentialsteptomaintaina

highqualityaudioandbalancethelevelsoftwosongstomix.

EQUALIZER CONTROLS

Then,inthesignalchainistheequalizer,orinshort,theEQ.Ifthegain

controlincreasesordecreasestheleveloftheentireaudiosignal

channel,theEQincreasesortemperslevelofaspecicfrequency

rangeoftheaudiosignal.



Thismixerallowsyoutocontrolthelevelranges(orbands)different

frequency,calledHigh,LowandMid(acute,mediaandsevere)and

theirrespectiveprot.

ItislikelythattheequalizeristhemostpowerfulweaponofaDJmixer

(althoughsomepeoplethinkit’sthecrossfader).

TheEQcontrolsareusedto:

1.-Toimprovethesoundqualityofsomebadsongsproducedor

recorded.

2.-Tohelpbalancetheoverallfrequencycontentoftwosongs.

3.-Emphasizemusicremovingorisolatingoneormorefrequency

bands.

4.-Mixsongssuperimposingthefrequencybandsoftwosongsthat

soundatonce.

Theoldsongsdonotusuallyhavesomanyseriousastoday.Itisoften

usedoftenEQserioustoamplifylow(frequenciessevere)anoldsong

andlevelingitsgravewithamodern.Failuretodosomaygivethe

impressionthat,whenmovingfromonesongatarecentancientmusic

soundslower.

Likewise,eventhesongsrecordedinthesameyearmaysound

differentfromoneanother,yetdespitereproducethesamevolume.This

effectisusuallyduetooneofthemhassomewaysmorepronounced

thantheother.Ifthegraveofbothsongsseemtosoundthesame

volume,youcanusetheEQmeansto“lowervolume”thesongthat

soundsevenstrongerbalancewiththesongweaker.

Also,DJsalsoliketoplayontheirperformancesintheiropinionby

manipulatingthesongsthatcapture.Forexample,aDJthatcancutthe

frequencyofsevereacuteandatrackafewbarsbeforethechorusofa

song,andthenrecoverthemattherighttimeinstartingthechorus.

Whenplayingtwosongsatthesametime,itiscommonthatthe

musicsoundcloudy.Thiseffectisusuallyduetoanincompatibilityof

thetwoserioussongs.Thereasonmaybethattonalityofthetwosongs

isdifferent,orthatbothsongshaveseriouslongandsustainednotes.

Tosolvethisproblemandgainclarity,lowenoughtoeliminateoneof

thesongs.

Themixturewillretainthegraveofanothersong,sowewillcontinue

soundingnatural.

LISTENED WITH EARPHONES

AfterthesignalpassingthroughtheEQ,issenttotwodifferent

destinations.Oneconcernstheheadphones,whichmeanslistening

anaudiosignalwithoutbeingaffectedbythefadervolume(insome

mixersthisfeatureiscalled“Cue”).

Ifyou’renotfamiliarwithusingamixer,thisdenitiondoesnotseemto

makesense.However,thinkofitasifitwereawaytolistentomusic

privately-channelmixer,regardlessofwhattheylistentotheaudience.

CUE

ThecontrolCueservestoestablishapointof‘cue’inasong.Acueisa

pointofreferencepositionwithinthesongtowhichyoucanjump

instantlyratherthanhavingtogotondtherunway.

Normally,inaccordancewithDJscuepointsatthebeginningofatime

ofthesong.

FADERS VOLUME CHANNEL

Besidessenttothesectionofheadphones,theaudiocomesfromthe

EQalsosendsthevolumefaderchannel.

Thisisthevolumecontrolofthemainchannel(thoughitissubjectto

crossfader).Theycanmatchthevolumesoftwotracks.

However,someDJsprefertokeepthevolumefaderschannelatits

highestpositionandadjustthevolumeofsongsthroughtheGain

controls.Thereasonforthischoiceisthatallowsthemtousethese

fadersforotherpurposesasmoltenvolume,choppycutsoreffects

similartothetechniquesemployedwiththecrossfader.Decanterby

eithermethodisamatterofpersonalpreference.

Youcanusethevolumeslidertoadjustthevolumefaderchannel

CROSSFADER

Theaudiosignal,afterleavingtheindividualchannelsthroughthemixer

volumefaderchannel,issenttothesideofthecrossfaderitsshare.

Asyoucansee,hernameisveryappropriate,sinceitallowsconduct

afadingbetweenthetwochannelswithamovementfromsidetoside

mixer.

Whenthecrossfaderisinitscentralposition,hearthetwochannels

mixer.IfyoumovethecrossfadertotallyleftaloneheartheChannel1.

Ifyoumovethecrossfaderfullyclockwise,onlyheartheChannel2

ThecrossfaderwasinventedtoprovideDJsaneasywaytoaccomplish

withonehandmeltedoffasongandotherinput,andthetruthisthat

fullsitsroleperfectly.However,sinceitsintroduction,DJshave

transformedthissimpletoolintoapowerfulweaponthatenables

extremelyfastcuts,scratches,andmanyothertechniques.
