Intended use
Your STANLEY Laminate Trimmer ST55 has been designed
for routing wood and wood products. This tool is intended for
professional and private, non-professional users.
Safety instructions
General power tool safety warnings
@ Warning! Read all safety warnings, instructions,
illustrations and specications provided with
this power tool. Failure to follow all instructions
listed below may result in electric shock, re and/or
serious injury.
Save all warnings and instructions for future reference.
The term “power tool” in the warnings refers to your mains-op-
erated (corded) power tool or battery-operated (cordless)
power tool.
1. Work area safety
a. Keep work area clean and well lit. Cluttered or dark
areas invite accidents.
b. Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres,
such as in the presence of ammable liquids, gases
or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the
dust or fumes.
c. Keep children and bystanders away while operating a
power tool. Distractions can cause you to lose control.
2. Electrical safety
a. Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify
the plug in any way.
Do not use any adapter plugs with earthed (grounded)
power tools. Unmodied plugs and matching outlets will
reduce risk of electric shock.
b. Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded
surfaces such as pipes, radiators, ranges and
refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric shock
if your body is earthed or grounded.
c. Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions.
Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of
electric shock.
d. Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for
carrying, pulling or unplugging the power tool. Keep
cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving
parts. Damaged or entangled cords increase the risk of
electric shock.
e. When operating a power tool outdoors, use an
extension cord suitable for outdoor use. Use of a cord
suitable for outdoor use reduces the risk of electric shock.
f. If operating a power tool in a damp location is
unavoidable, use a residual current device (RCD)
protected supply. Use of an RCD reduces the risk of
electric shock.
3. Personal safety
a. Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common
sense when operating a power tool.
Do not use a power tool while you are tired or under
the inuence of drugs, alcohol or medication. A
moment of inattention while operating power tools may
result in serious personal injury.
b. Use personal protective equipment. Always wear eye
protection. Protective equipment such as a dust mask,
non-skid safety shoes, hard hat or hearing protection used
for appropriate conditions will reduce personal injuries.
c. Prevent unintentional starting. Ensure the switch is in
the off-position before connecting to power source
and/or battery pack, picking up or carrying the tool.
Carrying power tools with your nger on the switch or
energising power tools that have the switch on
invites accidents.
d. Remove any adjusting key or wrench before turning
the power tool on. A wrench or a key left attached to a
rotating part of the power tool may result in personal injury.
e. Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at
all times. This enables better control of the power tool in
unexpected situations.
f. Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or
jewellery. Keep your hair and clothing away from
moving parts. Loose clothes, jewellery or long hair can
be caught in moving parts.
g. If devices are provided for the connection of dust
extraction and collection facilities, ensure these are
connected and properly used. Use of dust collection can
reduce dust-related hazards.
h. Do not let familiarity gained from frequent use of tools
allow you to become complacent and ignore tool
safety principles. A careless action can cause severe
injury within a fraction of a second.
4. Power tool use and care
a. Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power
tool for your application.The correct power tool will do
the job better and safer at the rate for which it
was designed.
b. Do not use the power tool if the switch does not turn it
on and off. Any power tool that cannot be controlled with
the switch is dangerous and must be repaired.
c. Disconnect the plug from the power source and/or
remove the battery pack, if detachable, from the power
tool before making any adjustments, changing
accessories, or storing power tools. Such preventive
safety measures reduce the risk of starting the power
tool accidentally.

d. Store idle power tools out of the reach of children and
do not allow persons unfamiliar with the power tool or
these instructions to operate the power tool. Power
tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users.
e. Maintain power tools and accessories. Check for
misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of
parts and any other condition that may affect the
power tool’s operation. If damaged, have the power
tool repaired before use. Many accidents are caused by
poorly maintained power tools.
f. Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly
maintained cutting tools with sharp cutting edges are less
likely to bind and are easier to control.
g. Use the power tool, accessories and tool bits etc. in
accordance with these instructions, taking into
account the working conditions and the work to
be performed.
Use of the power tool for operations different from those
intended could result in a hazardous situation.
h. Keep handles and grasping surfaces dry, clean and
free from oil and grease. Slippery handles and grasping
surfaces do not allow for safe handling and control of the
tool in unexpected situations.
5. Service
Have your power tool serviced by a qualied repair
person using only identical replacement parts. This will
ensure that the safety of the power tool is maintained.

uHold the power tool by insulated gripping surfaces only,
because the cutter may contact its own cord. Cutting a
“live” wire may make exposed metal parts of the power
tool “live” and could give the operator an electric shock.
uUse clamps or another practical way to secure
and support the workpiece to a stable platform.
Holding the work by your hand or against the body
leaves it unstable and may lead to loss of control.
uOnly use router bits with a shank diameter equal to the
size of the collet installed in the tool.
uOnly use router bits suitable for the no-load speed of
the tool.
uNever use router bits with a diameter exceeding the
maximum diameter specied in the technical data
section.
uDo not use the tool in an inverted position.
uDo not attempt to use the tool in a stationary mode.
uMake special care when routing MDF or surfaces coated
with lead-based paint.
uWear a dust mask specically designed for protection
against lead paint dust and fumes and ensure that
persons within or entering the work area are also
protected.
uDo not let children or pregnant women enter the work
area.
uDo not eat, drink or smoke in the work area.
uDispose of dust particles and any other debris safely.
uAlways wear a dust mask.
uThis appliance is not intended for use by young or inrm
persons without supervision. children must be supervised
to ensure they do not play with the appliance.
Residual risks.
Even with the application of the relevant safety regulations
and the implementation of safety devices, certain residual
risks can not be avoided. These include:
uInjuries caused by touching any rotating/moving parts.
uImpairment of hearing.
uRisk of injury when changing any parts, or accessories.
uHealth hazards caused by breathing dust developed when
sawing wood, especially oak, beech and MDF.
uInjuries caused by prolonged use of a tool.
When using any tool for prolonged periods ensure you
take regular breaks.
Safety of others
uThis appliance is not intended for use by persons
(including children) with reduced physical, sensory or
mental capabilities, or lack of experience and knowledge,
unless they have been given supervision or instruction
concerning use of the appliance by a person responsible
for their safety.
uChildren should be supervised to ensure that they do not
play with the appliance.
Vibration
The declared vibration emission values stated in the technical
data and the declaration of conformity have been measured
in accordance with a standard test method provided by
EN 62841 and may be used for comparing one tool with
another. The declared vibration emission value may also be
used in a preliminary assessment of exposure.
Warning! The vibration emission value during actual use of
the power tool can differ from the declared value depending
on the ways in which the tool is used. The vibration level
may increase above the level stated. When assessing
vibration exposure to determine safety measures required by
2002/44/EC to protect persons regularly using power tools
in employment, an estimation of vibration exposure should
consider, the actual conditions of use and the way the tool
is used, including taking account of all parts of the operating
cycle such as the times when the tool is switched off and
when it is running idle in addition to the trigger time.

The following pictograms along with the date code are shown
on the tool:

Electrical safety
#This tool is double insulated; therefore no earth
wire is required. Always check that the power
supply corresponds to the voltage on the rating
plate.
uInspect tool cords periodically. If the supply cord is
damaged, it must be replaced by the manufacturer or an
authorised STANLEY Service Centre in order to avoid a
hazard.
Using an extension cable
uAlways use an approved extension cable suitable for the
power input of this tool (see technical data). Before use,
inspect the extension cable for signs of damage, wear and
ageing.
uReplace the extension cable if damaged or defective.
When using a cable reel, always unwind the cable
completely. Use of an extension cable not suitable for the
power input of the tool or which is damaged or defective
may result in a risk of re and electric shock.

Assembly.
Warning! To prevent accidental operation, turn off and
unplug tool before performing the following operations.
Failure to do this could result in serious personal injury.
Cutter Bit Assembly (Fig B)
Wearing protective gloves while fitting and changing router bits
is recommended.
uReverse the unit;
uUse wrench #10mm (16) to lock the spindle (4), meanwhile
anticlockwise rotate wrench #17mm (17) to release the
collet nut (6);
uTake out the collet nut (6) and replace the collet (5) if
required;
uInsert the shaft of cutter bit in the collet (5) then tighten the
collet nut (6) by wrench #10 (16) and wrench #17 (17);
uApply the reverse procedure to remove the cutter bit.
Warning: Never tighten the collet nut without a bit installed.
Tightening an empty collet nut, even by hand, can damage
the collet.
Note: cutter bit insert and removal could be operated after
taking off the motor unit from the base.
Routing Depth Adjustment
uLoose the knob (8) on the base (9)
uMove the motor unit (3) to the proper position, using the
scale as a guide for routing depth setting. Tight the knob (8)
uCheck the routing depth by carrying out a practical test and
correct it if required.
Operation
Warning! Always observe the safety instructions and
applicable regulations.
Warning! To reduce the risk of serious personal injury, turn
tool off and disconnect tool from power source before making
any adjustments or removing/installing attachments or
accessories.
Warning! The voltage of the power source must match the
voltage specified on the rating plate of the power tool.
Warning! Never attempt to work with the power tool held upside
down. This is dangerous and can lead to serious accidents.
Switch on/off (Fig.C)
To switch on the power tool, set the on/off switch (1) to I. To
switch off the power tool, set the on/off switch (1) to 0.

No-Volt
The No-volt function stops the laminate trimmer restarting
without the switch being cycled if there is a break in the power
supply.
Feed Direction (Fig. D)
Move the tool forward over the workpiece surface, keeping
the tool base flush and advancing smoothly until the cutting
is complete.
When doing edge cutting, the workpiece surface should be on
the left side of the bit in the feed direction.
NOTE:
uSet the tool base on the workpiece to be cut without
the bit making any contact. Then on and wait until the
bit attains full speed.
uMoving the tool forward too fast may cause a poor
quality of cut, or damage to the bit or motor. Moving
the tool forward too slowly may burn and mar the cut.
The proper feed rate will depend on the bit size, the kind
of workpiece and depth of cut. Before beginning the cut on
the actual workpiece, it is advisable to make a sample cut
on a piece of scrap lumber. This will show exactly how the
cut will look as well as enable you to check dimensions.
uWhen using the straight guide or the guide, be sure to
keep it on the right side in the feed direction. This will
help to keep it ush with the side of the workpiece.
uOnly use the power tool when the base (9) is tted.
Losing control of the power tool can cause injuries.
uBe aware that the router bit (7) always protrudes
slightly from the base(9). Do not damage the template or
the workpiece.
uDo not put the power tool down before the router bit
has come to a complete stop. Application tools that are
still running can cause injuries.
Warning:
Since excessive cutting may cause overload of the motor
or difficulty in controlling the tool, the depth of cut should
not be more than 3 mm at a pass when cutting grooves.
When you wish to cut grooves more than 3 mm deep, make
several passes with progressively deeper bit settings.
Proper Hand Position (Fig. E)
Warning! To reduce the risk of serious personal injury, ALWAYS
use proper hand position as shown. WARNING: To reduce
the risk of serious personal injury, ALWAYS hold securely in
anticipation of a sudden reaction.
Proper hand position requires one hand on the motor base with
the other hand on the motor cap as shown.
Working with template guide (Fig. F1 – F3)
The template guide (18)provides a sleeve through which the
bit passes, allowing use of the trimmer with template patterns.
Loosen the screws and remove the base protector. Place the
template guide (18) on the base and replace the base protector.
Then secure the base protector by tightening the screws.
Secure the template to the workpiece. Place the tool on the
template and move the tool with the template guide sliding
along the side of the template.
NOTE:
uThe workpiece will be cut a slightly different size from the
template. Allow for the distance (X) between the router bit
and the outside of the template guide. The distance (X)
can be calculated by using the following equation:
Distance (X) = (outside diameter of the template guide -
router bit diameter) / 2
Working with a roller bearing guide (Fig. G)
The roller bearing guide (12) helps when routing edges with
router bits without a pilot pin or ball bearing.
Fit the pilot to the routing base (9) using the nut (19). Guide
the power tool along the workpiece edge with a uni-form feed.
Lateral clearance:
To change the amount of material being removed, you can
adjust the lateral clearance between the workpiece and the
guide roller (20) on the roller bearing guide (12). Loosen the
screw (21), set the lateral clearance you want by turning the
screw (22), then retighten the screw (21).
Working with a straight guide (Fig. H)
uThe straight guide is effectively used for straight cuts when
chamfering or grooving.
uFit the straight guide (11) to the base (9) using the guide
screw (19).
uSet the required stop depth using the wing bolt on the
straight guide (11).
uWhile it is switched on, guide the power tool along the
work-piece edge with a uniform feed and while applying
lateral pressure to the parallel guide.
Edge or profile routing (Fig. I)
For edge and profile routing without a straight guide, the router
bit must be fitted with a pilot pin or a ball bearing. While it is
switched on, guide the power tool towards the workpiece from
the side until the pilot pin or the ball bearing of the router bit
is touching the side of the workpiece edge that you want to
machine.
Guide the power tool along the workpiece edge. Pay atten-tion
that the router is positioned perpendicularly. Too much pressure
can damage the edge of the workpiece.
Circular work (Fig. J)
Circular work may be accomplished if you assemble the
straight guide and guide plate as shown in the figure.
