1ntroduction

This document defines the e ectromechanica parameters and operating characteristics for The

P anar Systems, Inc. LC1200R, Very High Bright, 12.1” Active Matrix Liquid Crysta Disp ay (AMLCD)

based product. It is intended for operation as a component in a high ambient ight, outdoor system.

The LC1200R has a sca eab e video format capab e of disp aying a minimum of VGA (640 x 480)

through XGA (1024 x 768) input reso ution.

The LC1200R can be driven direct y from the standard ana og video graphics adapter (VGA) output

on a persona computer (PC). It consists of a 12.1" viewab e diagona LCD pane with optica

e ements, co d-cathode f uorescent back ight, back ight inverter board, and LCD contro er board. A

tethered photodiode provides automatic brightness contro . Coo ing fans are provided to coo the

back of the LCD modu e. If used in direct sun ight, it is the system designer’s responsibi ity to provide

an enc osure that directs the airf ow, across the front of the disp ay. Two (2) chassis mounted

connectors at the rear provide for video signa and 12 V DC power input connections. The enc osure

is a uminum for added coo ing and ease of insta ation.

The LCD contro er board wi automatica y program itse f, sensing incoming

horizonta /vertica frequencies and sync pu se po arities to comp ete y “fi ” the active disp ay

area of the LC1200R with the video reso ution being presented. Section 4.2 defines

parameters for video reso ution detection by the LCD contro er board.

Note: IBM VGA1 modes with border and the 720 x 400 video reso utions are exc uded from

comp ete y fi ing the active disp ay area horizonta y. On y the first 640 pixe s wi be

2.4 Cooling Fans

Four (4) thermostatica y contro ed coo ing fans are provided to coo the rear of the disp ay. The

thermostat is set to turn the fans on when the video board temperature reaches 30° C. If the disp ay

is used in direct sun ight, airf ow must be directed across the front of the disp ay or the disp ay LCD

f uid may reach its c earing point, then the LC1200R wi become temporari y unreadab e.

2.5 Connectors

There are four connectors supp ied as an integra part of the LC1200R.

2.5.1

Video Signal Connector

The LC1200R unit inc udes a chassis mounted 15-pin fema e mini D-She connector (AMP

748390-5 or equiva ent) with socket contacts at the rear of the LC1200R. It is shie ded for

e ectromagnetic interference (EMI) purposes. Refer to Section 4.1 for e ectrica connections.

2.5.2

DC Power nput Connector

The DC power input connector is a chassis mounted 2-pin connector (Mo ex Mini Fit Jr

Header 5569 Mo ex p/n 39-30-0020) with pin contacts at the side of the LC1200R. The

connections are insu ated to prevent accidenta contact.

2.5.3

Photodiode Connector

A 3-pin connector, Mo ex p/n 22-03-5035, is provided on the inverter board. The connector

accepts the cab e assemb y provided with the product that attaches to the provided

photodiode board.

2.5.4

Dimming Control Connector

A 5-pin connector, Mo ex p/n 22-03-5055, provides an ana og input that can override the

automatic photodiode dimming and a ows the back ight to be shut down using an inhibit

input.

2.5.5

Button Board Connector

The Button board can be mounted remote y or removed for better access when mounted

into the arger system.

2.6 nterface Cables

The disp ay is shipped with a remote photo-sensor and cab e, removab e button board, and 6 ft VGA

interface cab e. No other interface cab es are provided. An externa power supp y brick is avai ab e

for purchase from P anar Systems, Inc.

LC1200R User’s Guide

021-0183-00 Rev A 8 of 29

2.7 Power Supply

The LC1200R does not ship with a power supp y. It is recommended that the P anar Systems, Inc.

power adapter, part number 997-3066-00 (US) or 997-3067-00 (EU) be purchased with each unit.

Refer to Section 5 for power requirements.

2.8 LCD Controller Board

The LCD contro er board incorporates components necessary to drive the LCD pane . Accepting VGA

and VESA video standards (Section 1.2), these video signa s are digitized and processed for the LCD

pane . Due to the LCD pane ’s fixed video reso ution (800 x 600), the LCD contro er board wi

perform independent horizonta and vertica zoom and shrink sca ing of specified video reso utions

ess than or greater than the LCD pane ’s video reso ution to fu y accommodate the LCD pane ’s

capabi ity.

Magnification or reduction of specified video reso utions to match the native LCD pane ’s reso ution

incorporates sca ing a gorithms minimizing a iasing and image distortion. The LCD contro er board

inc udes the fo owing characteristics:

•Per pixe sca eab e fi ters providing text sharpening and graphics smoothing for improved

image qua ity.

•Co or depth enhancement by performing spatia -tempora dithering reducing visua artifacts.

•Externa contro s. See User Contro s (Page 18) for more information.

There are 5 connectors for 12 V fans ocated on the contro er board. They are attached to a 30º C

thermostat.

2.9 nverter Board

The inverter PCB drives the LC1200R’s 6 co d cathode f uorescent amps (CCFL). It is capab e of

automatic brightness contro of the back ight. See User Contro s (Page 17) for more information on

the dimming functions.

There are 4 connectors to power 12 V fans on the inverter PCB. They are on constant y.

2.10 Photodiode Board

A photodiode (Siemens BPW21) mounted on a separate circuit board is provided for sensing the

ambient ight conditions. A cab e (40 cm in ength) is connected from the photodiode board to the

inverter board on the LC1200R.

Size: approximate y 1 x 3 cm with two 3mm diameter mounting ho es. Refer to mechanica out ine

drawing for detai s

Tair is defined as ambient air temperature surrounding the LC1200R.

Note 1: Tair < 32°C : 95% RH maximum.

air > 32°C : Abso ute humidity content not to exceed 100% at 32oC.

Note 2: Tair @ -20°C < 48 hours

air @ 60°C < 168 hours

Note 3: S ight background co or changes are a owed depending on ambient temperature.

This phenomenon is reversib e.

Note 4: High temperature operation assumes the use of an enc osure that proper y directs the

fan airf ow

Note 5: Upper operating temperature imit of 60°C is without so ar oading.

Reference to "room ambient" is interpreted as 20°C - 25°C [68°F°- 77°F] and app ies throughout this
