TurbiTechw² LR Instruction Manual
1 Foreword
The TurbiTechw² amily o sensors are the latest version o the TurbiTech range. The 'w²' in the product title
denotes compatibility with the Waterwatch² range. The sensors are designed or use with the 7300w²
Monitor. The term TurbiTech is used or any Partech sel -cleaning, Suspended Solids or Turbidity Sensor.
The TurbiTechw² LR Sensor has been speci ically designed to monitor inal treated, potable and ilter water.
The sensor is extremely sensitive and is capable o discriminating changes in Turbidity o less than 0.1 NTU.
The 90° light scatter monitoring technique makes the sensor sensitive to a wide range o particle sizes, rom
colloidal material through to larger particles and raw waters and the large mineral particles sometimes ound
in distribution samples.
The sensor requires very little maintenance, with no special tools or training required. Calibration can be
carried out against either a wet Turbidity standard or using the dry calibration re erence cell that is supplied
with every sensor. The re erence cell provides an extremely easy, repeatable method o checking the
per ormance o the sensor without the cost and inherent errors associated with chemical standards.
The TurbiTechw² LR Sensor complies with the internationally recognised ISO7027 standard or Turbidity
measurement. The unique sensor design captures stray light which ensures an ultra stable zero point, this is
combined with an automatic sel -cleaning mechanism that prevent the build up o ouling within the sample
chamber.

4 The ensor and Installation
Whilst every attempt has been made to ensure that these instructions are correct, common sense and good
engineering practice should always be used, as every installation can present a new set o challenges and
di iculties. I you are in any doubt please contact Partech or your local distributor or urther in ormation.
4.1 TurbiTechw² LR ensor
All the TurbiTechw² Sensors in the amily use an LED in ra red light source, which o ers long-term
stability, low maintenance and high reliability. All TurbiTechw² Sensors use either Light Scatter or Light
Absorption to per orm their measurement.
In simple terms, turbidity means cloudy, hazy or not pure. All drinking water, both raw and treated
contains some degree o turbidity due to dispersed suspended particles such as silt, clay, algae,
organic/inorganic matter or micro organisms.
Turbidity is a measurement quanti ying the degree to which light travelling through the water sample is
scattered by the suspended particles. The transmission o light is determined by physical parameters
such as particle concentration, size, shape and chemical properties. The scattering o light increases
with a greater concentration o suspended load. Turbidity is commonly measured in Nephelometric
Turbidity Units (NTU). The nephelometric method compares the light scattered by the sample and the
light scattered by a re erence solution.
The TurbiTechw² LR Sensor measures the turbidity o the sample water in NTU's in accordance with
established measurement techniques. The measurement cell has been designed to reduce unwanted
stray light to an absolute minimum resulting in a very accurate zero point. The 7300w² Monitor has the
acility or converting the units to mg/l under some circumstances, urther details are provided in the
7300w² Monitor user manual.
The beam rom the LED light source is passed through the sample o water contained in the measurement
cell and the amount o light scattered by particles in the sample is measured at 90 degrees to the light
source. The 7300w² Monitor uses an LED light source with an optical eedback loop to maintain constant
light levels. The sample lows through the lowcell continuously while the TurbiTechw² LR Sensor is in
measurement mode. The large bore lowcell reduces the danger o ouling or clogging in raw water
applications.
The TurbiTechw² LR sensor is a dedicated lowcell sensor and uses a wiper type cleaner. In the
intended clean water applications this wiper is more than capable o keeping the optical sur aces
clean. The wiper should be replaced every two years to ensure the cleaning unction remains e ective.
The TurbiTechw² LR sensor is available in two ranges; 0 to 30NTU & 0 to 500NTU. The range is
dictated by the hardware o the lowcell so cannot be changed by the user. There ore the range should
be speci ied when the instrument is ordered.
All the example screens in this manual relate to the 0 to 30NTU sensor. All the menu options and
unctionality are identical between the ranges except or the actual numeric value and number o
decimal places o NTUs.
