The OFITE High-Temperature, High-Pressure (HTHP) Dynamic lter press
measures ltration properties under varying dynamic down-hole conditions.
A motor driven shaft tted with a propeller turns at varying speeds inside a
standard 500-mL HTHP cell. Speed settings up to 3,600 RPM impart laminar
or turbulent ow to the uid inside the cell, and by varying the shaft length,
the shear stress may be increased or decreased. Other features include a
variable speed motor with RPM indicated on a digital display.
The test procedure is exactly the same as that in the conventional HTHP
ltration test. The only difference is that uid is circulating inside the cell,
while ltrate is being collected. Since the lter medium is conventional disk
material, the results are fully comparable with those of other laboratories or
for comparing historical trends.
The Dynamic Filter Press comes with two interchangeable bottom caps to
accommodate quarter inch thick ceramic disks or conventional lter paper.
Both caps have a threaded hole for the valve stem, which connects to the
100-mL back pressure receiver.
Two regulators provide both main pressure and back pressure from a single
Nitrogen source. A temperature controller maintains a constant temperature
throughout the test and a temperature display shows the cell temperature.
The Dynamic Filter Press also comes with an internal cooling system which
enables the cell to be cooled rapidly via a water or coolant connection.

Safety Read this manual carefully before attempting to use the equipment. Improper
use can result in injury or damage to the equipment.
Temperature
The heating jacket, test cell, and valve stems will be very hot during testing.
Handle these components with care. Never touch hot components without
wearing protective clothing.
At elevated temperatures, the uid in the test cell will expand. Never ll the
test cell completely with uid. Always leave some void space to allow for
thermal expansion. Refer to page 9 for recommended ll volumes.
Pressure
Always pressurize with either Carbon Dioxide or Nitrogen. Do not use Nitrous
Oxide (NO2), Oxygen (O2), or compressed air. These gasses are dangerous
at elevated temperatures.

Equipment
Inspect all o-rings before every test. Discard any that show signs of damage
or wear. Looks for nicks, cuts, or brittle o-rings. Two sets of o-rings are
included with the Filter Press. The rst set is made from Viton 75D. These
o-rings are black and should be used for tests up to 400°F only. The second
set is made from Viton 90D. These o-rings are green and should be used for
tests up to 500°F.
The Safety Pin includes an attached lanyard. The lanyard secures the pin and
prevents it from accidentally disengaging from the valve stem and pressure
assembly. Always secure the pin with the lanyard.

Setup 1. Carefully unpack the units and place them on a stable surface near a
power outlet. Unpack and unwrap each of the component pieces.
2. Make sure all switches are off and both regulators are backed off
(counterclockwise) completely.
3. Connect a Nitrogen source to the port to the back of the control box.
4. Plug the instrument into a suitable power source.

Quick Start 1. Preheat the heating jacket to 10°F (6°C) above the test temperature. The
pilot light will turn on at the target temperature.
2. Inspect all o-rings. Replace any that show signs of damage or wear.
3. Apply grease to all o-rings.
4. Assemble both cell caps. Place an o-ring in the groove around the cap.
5. Place an o-ring in the groove inside the cell.
6. Place a circle of lter paper or ceramic disk on top of the o-ring.
7. Screw the outlet cell cap into the cell and tighten it completely.
8. Screw a valve stem into the outlet cell cap and tighten it completely.
9. Place an o-ring in the groove inside the cell.
10. Place an o-ring in the groove around the cell cap.
11. Pour mud in the cell leaving the proper amount of void space.
See page 9.
12. Screw the inlet cell cap with the mag drive attached into the cell. Tighten it
completely.
13. Screw a valve stem into the inlet cell cap and tighten it completely.
14. Place the cell in the heating jacket. Rotate the cell until it locks.
15. Install the cell temperature thermocouple into the cell body.
16. Plug the mag drive into the port on the back of the control box.
17. Connect the manifold block to the top valve stem and secure it with the
safety pin.
18. Connect the back pressure receiver to the bottom valve stem and secure it
with the safety pin.
19. Adjust both regulators to the target back pressure for the test.
20. Open the top valve stem ½ turn.
21. After heat time, increase the top pressure to 500 PSI above the back
pressure.
22. Open the bottom valve stem to initiate ltration.

23. Collect ltrate and record the volume at 1, 7.5, and 30 minutes.
24. After 30 minutes, close both valve stems.
25. Turn both regulators counterclockwise.
26. Open the outlet valve on the back pressure receiver to collect any
remaining ltrate.
27. Open the valve on the manifold block to release any remaining pressure.
28. Remove the manifold block and back pressure receiver.
29. Begin cooling by opening the cooling valve on the back of the jacket.
30. Remove the cell from the heating jacket. Keep the outlet side pointing
down.
31. When the cell is cool, slowly open the valve stem on the inlet side to
release the pressure.
32. Unscrew the outlet cell cap.
33. Wash the lter cake and record the thickness to the nearest 1/3 2 ".
34. Clean and dry all components.

Operation 1. Turn the “Power” and “Heat” switches on.
2. Connect the temperature controller extension cable from the back of the
control box to the back of the lter press.
3. Use the up and down arrows on the “Temperature Controller” set the
temperature to 10°F (6°C) above the desired test temperature.
4. Inspect all o-rings. Replace any that show signs of damage or wear.
Looks for nicks, cuts, or brittle o-rings. Replace all o-rings after any test
above 350°F (176.7°C). Place a thin lm of silicone grease on all o-rings.

5. Place an o-ring (#170-13-3) on the shoulder inside the cell body on the
end marked “OUT”. Place another o-ring in the groove around the cell
cap.
6. Place a circle of lter paper or ceramic disk on top of the cell o-ring.
Gently push the paper or disk downward so it contacts the o-ring without
the paper binding or pinching.
7. Secure the cell cap with the cap wrench bar (#171-190-029).
8. Place an o-ring in each of the two o-ring grooves on both valve stems.
9. Screw one valve stem into the outlet cell cap. Tighten the valve stem
completely.

10. Invert the cell body and carefully pour the sample into the cell. Leave
enough void space for thermal expansion (see chart below). Consider the
volume of the shaft and propeller for additional void space.
14. Secure the top cap assembly in place with the spanner wrench
(#170-95-313).
15. Screw a valve stem into the cell cap and tighten it completely.

11. Place an o-ring on the shoulder inside the cell body. Place another o-ring
on the cell cap.
Be careful not to spill uid on the o-ring inside the cell.
12. Unscrew the magnetic drive from the cell cap. Replace the Teon tape
around the threads on the magnetic drive. Screw the drive back into the
cell cap.
13. Lower the propeller and propeller shaft down into the test cell.
