Introduction

Thank You for choosing a Montigo C-Series Fireplace.

About the C42 Fireplace:

The includes a 27,000 BTU dual burner with embers and a ive piece

ceramic logset. This model is available in our versions.

nC42DT - Top Vent, Millivolt Pilot

nC42D - Rear Vent, Millivolt Pilot

nC42DT-S - Top Vent, Pilotless Ignition (STB)

nC42D -S - Rear Vent, Pilotless Ignition (STB)

The C42-DV is rated or Natural Gas at 27,000 BTU/H (7.33 Kilowatts)

Input or Propane at 27,000 BTU/H (7.33 Kilowatts) Input.

How to use this manual:

This manual covers all models and unless otherwise speci ied, the

designation C42-DV re ers to all models. Sections which are

speci ic to a particular model are marked with a symbol,

plus the appropriate model number.

Warranty and Installation Information:

The Montigo warranty will be voided by, and Montigo disclaims

any responsibility or, the ollowing actions:

nModi ication o the ireplace and/or components including

Direct-Vent assembly or glass doors.

nUse o any component part not manu actured or approved by

Montigo in combination with this Montigo ireplace system.

nInstallation other than as instructed in this manual.

Consult your local Gas Inspection Branch on installation requirements

or actory-built gas ireplaces. Installation & repairs should be done by

a quali ied contractor.

Installations in Canada must con orm to the current CAN/CGA B-

149.1 and .2 Gas Installation Code and local regulations. I the optional

air-circulating an kit is installed, it must be electrically grounded in

accordance with CSA C22.1 Canadian Electrical Code Part 1 and/or

Local Codes.

Installations in the USA must con orm to local codes, or in the

absense o local codes to the National Fuel Gas Code, ANSI Z223.1-

1988. I the optional air-circulating an is installed, it must be grounded

in accordance with local codes or, in the absence o local codes, with

the National Electrical Code, ANSI/NFPA 70-1987.

Installing The Fireplace Shell

The ireplace may be installed in any location that is ree o air

conditioning ducts, electrical wiring and plumbing. Sa ety, as well as

e iciency o operation, must be considered when selecting the

ireplace location. Try to select a location that does not inter ere with

room tra ic, has adequate ventilation, and o ers an accessible

pathway or Direct Vent installation. Re er to page 4 - Vent Installation

or more in ormation.

The ireplace dimensions are shown below:

Installation

When installing a shel over the top o the ireplace, the ollowing

guidelines must be adhered to: For Rear Vent models (C42-D ),

the minimum clearance rom the top o the ireplace to a shel is 8". For

Top Vent models (C42-DT), the minimum clearance is 15". (Minimum

1" clearance must still be maintained around the vent pipes.)

When this appliance is installed directly on carpeting, tile or any

combustible material other than wood looring, it must be installed

on a metal or wood panel extending the ull width and depth o

the appliance.

These clearances apply to all dimensions except the framed opening,

where the clearance to combustibles is 0". The C42-DV clearances to

combustible materials are:

* Clearance rom the top o the ireplace to a combustible

ceiling within the ireplace enclosure.

Unprotected combustible walls which are perpendicular to the

ireplace opening, must not project beyond the shaded area shown in

Figure 19b.

For protection against reezing temperatures, it is recommended that

outer walls o the chase be insulated with a vapour barrier. This will

reduce the possibility o a cold-air convection current on the ireplace.

Vent Installation

This section covers the installation o direct venting and terminations.

Installation equirements

nC42-DV ireplaces are certi ied or use with Montigo Premium

Series (5" / 8") venting components. The C42-DV Top Vent

may be used with Standard Series (4"/7") components on

vertical vent runs only.

nMinimum 1" clearance to combustibles required or vent pipes

nUse only certified Montigo vent components. (Use o other

parts will void the Montigo warranty, and may impede the

operation o the ireplace.)

nAll joints must be secured with a minimum o two screws per joint

nVent terminations must not be recessed in walls or siding

nHorizontal runs must be supported by a minimum o two supports

per horizontal run. A minimum o one screw on each side o

support is also required

nFlex vent sections may be stretched up to 50% o their total length

(eg. a 24" section may be stretched to 36")

nMaximum horizontal run or a lex section with no vertical rise is 3 eet.

nFlex vent sections over 3 eet must all within the limits set by the

venting graph and must have a minimum vertical rise o 3 inches

per oot o lex.

nSolid vent sections may be cut less than hal way rom the tapered end

Vent Terminations

Selecting A Termination Location

Choosing your vent termination location will help to determine whether

you need to use a top vent or rear vent ireplace. Figure 6, below,

shows typical ireplace locations and the venting options they provide.

For a more detailed diagram o allowed termination locations, see

Appendix A.

Installing The Gas Line

The gas line must be installed be ore inishing the C42-DV Fireplace.

Natural Gas requires a minimum inlet gas supply pressure o 5.5"

W.C. & a mani old pressure o 3.5" W.C. Propane Gas requires a

minimum inlet gas supply pressure o 11" W.C. & a mani old pressure

o 10" W.C. Provision must also be made or a 1/8" N.P.T. plugged

tapping and be accessible or test gauge connection immediately

upstream o the gas supply controls to the appliance. The ireplace gas

connection and the main operating gas valve is located behind the

removable brass trim at the bottom o the unit and need only be

attached to the gas line with an approved itting, as required by the

applicable installation codes.

Note: A ter gas line is connected, each appliance connection,

valve and valve train must be checked while under

normal operating pressure with either a liquid solution, or

leak detection device, to locate any source o leak. Tighten

any areas where bubbling appears or leak is detected until

bubbling stops completely or leak is no longer detected.

DO NOT use a flame of any kind to test for leaks.

Installing The Remote Switch

The C42-DV's gas valve, located behind the lower brass trim, may

be connected to a wall switch. The valve generates its own power

on a millivolt circuit. Use only low voltage wire, and DO NOT

connect any external power to it.

Re er to Figure 26 or wiring requirements.

Note: The switch location must not exceed 30' rom the ireplace.

The appliance and its individual shuto valve must be disconnected

rom the gas supply piping system during any pressure testing o that

system at test pressures in excess o 1/2 psig (3.5 kPa).

The appliance must be isolated rom the gas supply piping system by

closing its individual manual shuto valve during any pressure testing o

the gas supply piping system at test pressures equal to or less than 1/2

psig (3.5 kPa).

nVent terminations can be very hot. I the termination is less than

7 eet above a public walkway, it should be itted with a certi ied

Montigo Heat Guard. (Part no. PTKOG)

nDo not obstruct, or attempt to conceal, the vent termination.

These actions will a ect the operation o the ireplace, and may

be hazardous.

nIn heavy snow areas, take extra care to prevent snow buildup

rom obstructing the vent termination.

1. Frame the termination opening to 12" x 12".

2. Fasten the termination to the studs using a minimum o 4 screws.

2. Fasten the MOSR rame to the interior side o the studs using a

minimum o 4 screws.

3. Insert the termination into the MOSR rame as shown here, and

attach by screwing through the our pilot holes in the termination.

1. Ensure that the two long mounting brackets are acing the

bottom o the termination. (See inset). This will provide more

heat protection at the top o the termination, where temperatures

are highest.

2. Attach to the aceplate o the termination using our sheet metal

screws.

Top Vent Venting Runs

For the C42-DV Top Vent, there are two types o installations: A)

Through-The-Wall Installations and B) Vertical (Through-The-Roo )

Installations.

A) Through-The-Wall Installations

Be ore you install any venting, you must determine whether the venting

run will be acceptable. Unacceptable venting can a ect the ireplace's

combustion.

The Venting Graph

Measure the vertical height rom the ireplace hearth to the centre

o the termination and the horizontal run rom the rom the

ireplace lue collar to the wall lange o the termination. Plot on the

Venting Graph (Fig. 7) with an 'X'.

I the 'X' alls on or above the top boundary o the shaded area,

the installation is acceptable.

Example A: (Acceptable Installation)

I the vertical dimension rom the hearth is 84" and the

horizontal run to the wall lange o the vent termination is 36",

this would be an acceptable installation.

Example B: (Acceptable Installation)

I the vertical dimension rom the hearth is 90" and the

horizontal run to the wall lange o the vent termination is

120", this would be an acceptable installation.

Example C: (Unacceptable Installation)

I the vertical dimension rom the loor o the ireplace is 72"

and the horizontal run to the wall lange o the vent termina-

tion is 84", this would NOT be an acceptable installation.

Heat Shields

Due to high lue temperatures, heat shield are required on all C42-DV

installations (except those with vertical terminations) at the point where

the venting connects to the termination.

With the heat shield, vent clearances

can be maintained at 1".

For our shortest venting con iguration use components A and F (see

Figure 9a).

Horizontal Venting

Figure 9b. Typical Top Vent installation. The solid sections can be

used in various combinations to obtain the desired vent

run. The vent run must fall within the limits set by the

venting graph.

PEXT Section

Example 2:

Rigid sections and an elbow used in conjunction with 3 t. lex section

(PFL-3) will, when extended in a ive oot chase, allow or a maximum

horizontal run o twelve and one-hal eet rom the centre o the

ireplace to outside wall and a minimum o 7'6" when retracted in

opposite direction (see Figure 10 and 11).

"C" lex sections and "D" rigid sections may be used in conjunction with

one another to obtain di erent possible horizontal length installations.

NOTE: Flex section with no vertical rise must not exceed maximum

horizontal length o 3 eet (see Figure 12). Flex runs over 3 eet must

all within the limits set by the venting graph, and must have a minimum

vertical rise o 3" per oot o lex.

burn characteristics o the ireplace.

2. 45° Corner Installation.

Attach an PEL-45 (45° elbow) directly onto the lue collar. Cut the

PXT-20 to suit, and attach it to the PEL-45. Slide the ireplace into

position and attach to the termination.

Rear Vent Venting Runs

The C42-DV ear Vent has three possible installations which do

not require vertical li t:

Heat Shields

Due to high lue temperatures, heat shields are required on all

C42-DV installations (except those with vertical terminations) at the

point where the venting connects to the termination. With the heat

shield, vent clearances can be maintained at 1". *Heat Shields are

included.

See Figure 8.

1. Straight Installation.

The height rom the hearth to the center o the termination

is 31 ½". C42-DV Rear Vent versions are supplied with a 20"

extension pipe (PXT-20) with emale/ emale connections. For

shorter installations, cut the PXT-20 to the desired length.

For extended installations, use the PXT-20 section as supplied or a

20" vent run.

Note: For Rear Vent models, maximum horizontal run with no

vertical li t must never exceed 20".

3. Corner Installation — 45° or less.

Use an PTO-3 termination and an PFL-1 or PFL-2 (12" or 24"

compressed length) and a rame, i appropriate. Flex may be

turned to obtain desired degree o angle required but must not

exceed 45°.

B. Multi-Elbow Installations

For more di iicult installation situations, the C42-DV Rear Vent may

be installed with two — 90° elbows and up to 15' o horizontal run. I

using this installation option, you must adhere to the ollowing

guidelines:

nthe irst 90° elbow must be placed directly on the lue collar

nyou must have a minimum vertical li t o 50" (measured rom

the hearth)

nyour vent run must all within the limits set by Figure 18a

this would be an acceptable installation.

Example B: (Acceptable Installation)

I the vertical dimension rom the hearth is 90" and the

horizontal run to the wall lange o the vent termination is 126",

this would be an acceptable installation.

Example C: (Unacceptable Installation)

I the vertical dimension rom the loor o the ireplace is 78"

and the horizontal run to the wall lange o the vent termination

is 108", this would NOT be an acceptable installation.
