CONFIDENTIAL Introduction
MVD500 User Manual 1.0 1-1
CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION
The MVD500 is a professional single-channel MPEG-2 HD Decoder, based on the
Digital-Cinema prooven MVD400 and optimized for Japanese Broadcast applica-
tions.
Encapsulated in a EMC-proven 1RU stainless-steel housing the MVD500 supports
simultaneous output of two decoded audio tracks onto four AES3-ID interfaces and
simultaneous output of the single decoded video track onto two interfaces, SD-SDI
and HD-SDI.
Software on the embedded processor improves the hardware upon capabilities like
automatic configuration and remote control. Programmable hardware aside to pure
MPEG-2 decoding allow to add functionalities on-site by software update.
Feature
The MVD500 has the following key features:
• MPEG-2 MP@HL hardware decoder (ISO/IEC 13818-1/2)
• Supports all 18 ATSC formats, 1/1.001 frequencies and interlace/pro-
gressive/segmented frames
• Up to 80 Mbps video ES bitrate
• Video Up/Down-Scaling
• Dual digital video output (SD-SDI, HD-SDI)
• Dual 5.1 MPEG-2 AAC hardware decoder (ISO/IEC 13818-7)
• 8ch digital audio output (4 x AES3-ID)
• Software update via RS232
• Upgradeable and customizable hardware architecture

CHAPTER 2: FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION
The MVD500 is an integrated MPEG-2 HD Decoder, based on the Digital-Cinema
prooven MVD400 design and optimized for Japanese Broadcast applications.
The device receives compressed MPEG-2 Transport Stream data from a ASI inter-
face and outputs decompressed video onto SD-SDI and HD-SDI interface simulta-
neously.
A dual audio decoder architecture allows to decode two audio tracks in parallel with
up to 2x8 audio channel. These can be routed flexibly to the 8 output channel.
An embedded processor utilizes automatic setup and configuration after power-on
as well as firmware update of the MVD500 via RS232.
The stainless steel housing, the robust AC/DC converter and the forced internal air-
flow finally turn the MVD500 into a reliable solution for broadcast applications.
The following sections describe main functional building blocks of the MVD500. Fig-
ure 2-1 illustrates data flow and main functional building blocks.

well as a DVB-ASI loop-through output for cascading several devices.
If no valid ASI signal is detected in the input a warning message is displayed in the
front panel. In this case the ASI output is invalid too.
TS Demultiplexing
When automatic program detection & selection mode is enabled the demultiplex
unit together with the embedded processor scan for PIDs from the PAT and PMT
tables, automatically selecting and configuring the first program service to be
found. However, program selection can be performed manually from the front pan-
el or from remote.
The TS Demux also incorporates the VBV-buffer mechanism as defined in the
MPEG-2 standard, performes timestamp evaluation/tracing and provides demulti-
plexed audio/video data to the dedicated decoder units.
If no program service is available or audio is missing an appropriate warning mes-
sage is diplayed.
Video Decoding
The video decoding unit performes decompression of the MPEG-2 data complying
to MPEG-2 MP@HL. All relevant broadcast video formats are supported, including
1/1.001 frequncies and 24 Hz frame rates. Thus image resolution and video data
rate may vary from SD to HD conditions.
Seamless switching
This decoder follows seamless switching of HD/SD as described in ARIB STD-B32
Part1 Chapter4.
Audio Decoding
A dual audio decoder unit performs decompression of two independend audio bit-
streams complying to MPEG-2 AAC. Unit #1 can perform up to 5.1 surround sound
decoding, unit #2 can perform to stereo decoding only.
Up/Down-Scaling
The video decoder unit transparently decodes video and outputs decoded data in
its native video format. To utilize simulataneous SD and HD video output a scaling
unit automatically performs the necessary up/down-scaling: SD-to-HD (up-)scal-
