PREPARINGFORTHEINSTALLATION
1. Read the“SafetyPrecautions” section,page3 ofthismanual first
andthenthe entiremanualcarefully. If youdon’tfollow thesafety
rules, the water heater will not operate properly. It could cause
DEATH,SERIOUSBODILYINJURYAND/ORPROPERTYDAMAGE.
Thismanualcontainsinstructionsfor theinstallation,operation, and
maintenanceofthe gas-firedwaterheater. Italsocontainswarnings
throughout the manual that you must read and be aware of. All
warningsandall instructionsare essential tothe properoperation
ofthewaterheaterandyoursafety. Sincewecannotputeverything
on the first few pages, READ THE ENTIRE MANUAL BEFORE
ATTEMPTINGTOINSTALLOROPERATETHEWATERHEATER.
2. The installation must conform with these instructions and the local
code authority having jurisdiction. In the absence of local codes,
installationsshallcomplywiththeNationalFuelGasCodeANSIZ223.1/
NFPA54andtheNationalElectricalCode,NFPA70.Thesepublications
are available from The National Fire Protection Association, 1

3. The waterheaterwhen installedmust begrounded inaccordance
withthelocal codes,orin theabsenceof localcodes,the National
ElectricalCodeNFPA70.
4. Ifafterreadingthismanualyouhaveanyquestionsordonotunderstand
anyportionoftheinstructions,callthelocalgasutilityorMaytagCustomer
Service at 1-800-788-8899 for an authorized servicer.
5. Carefullyplantheplacewhereyouaregoing toputthewaterheater.
Correct combustion,vent action,andventpipeinstallation arevery
