and“LampAlarm”areintheOFF(toggle
up)posion.PlugtheEmulatorconnector
intotheIEPontheBLACKCOMB/HO
controller,thenpluginthecontroller
powercord.
ToEmulateaparcularmodulefailure,
togglethecorrespondingswitchtothe
ON(toggledown)posion.Thealarm
can be cleared by returning the switch to
itsOFF(toggleup)posion.Thedevice
alsocanemulatetheUVintensityreportedbyaUVsensormodule.Turningtheright“UV”
knobintheclockwisedireconwillincreasetheintensity,whileturningitcounterclockwisewill
decreasetheintensity.Pleasenotethattoseeallthecapabiliesofthesensor,youwillneed
tocycletheintensitythroughtherangeof49through66%.The“DaysRemaining”cyclecan
alsobeadjustedbyturningthele“Days”knob.Theemulatormodulemustonlybesupplied
atSELV.

TheRemoteAlarmmodulecomeswithbothamaleandfemale

simplyplugthemaleplugintotheIEPontheStandardorHigh
Outputcontroller,orintoanyotherBLACKCOMBmodulethat
containsanIEP(sensor,4-20mAmodule,solenoidmodule,etc.)
and then restart the system.
TheRemoteAlarmmoduleisapairofdrycontactsandcanbe
usedtoconnectthecontrollertoaPLCbasedsystem,analarm
buzzer(orlight),oran“OK”light.Maximumcontactrangis30V
/1A.Iftheconnecteddevice(eg.lightorbuzzer)exceedsthe1A
currentrangthenusetheRemoteAlarmModuletocontrolan
appropriatelyratedrelay.
TheremotealarmmodulemustonlybesuppliedatSELV.

rangis240VAC(50-60Hz)/30VDC/2A.
LOCATION
Step 1) Findasuitablelocaononthewallforthesolenoid
module. The module must be installed close enough to the
controller,ortheUVsensortobeabletopluginthemale
IEP connector. The module must also be installed close
enough to the actual solenoid valve and this distance will
bedependentonthecordlengthoftheparcularsolenoid
valve that is used.
Step 2)Pickalocaonforthesolenoidvalveandinstallas
perthemanufacturer’sdirecons.Thesolenoidmodule
requiresbareleadsforconnecontoterminalblocks,so
ifthesolenoidcablehasaplugaached,removetheplug
andstripthewirestoasuitablelength.
INSTALLATION
Step 1) MakesurethesolenoidvalvecableisNOTpluggedintotheelectricaloutlet.Insert
thesolenoidvalvecablethroughthecenterholeofthemiddlestrainrelief.Connectthethree
electricalwirestotheterminalblockthatismarked“SOLENOID”(seeFig.2).Connectthe
groundwireintheposionmarked“GND”,thelinevoltagewireintheposionmarked“L1”
andtheneutralwireintheposionmarked“N”.Typicalwirecolourconguraonsaremarked
directlyonthecircuitboardtotheleoftheSOLENOIDterminalblocktoaidinthisprocess
(seeFig.3)Ifyouareunsureofthecorrectwiringconguraonforyouparcularsolenoid
valve,pleasecontactanapprovedelectricalcontractor.Onceallthelinevoltageconnecons
havebeenmade,ghtenthestrainreliefnuttosecurethecabletothesolenoidmodule.

Step 2) Plugthesolenoidvalveintotheapplicableelectrical
outlet.Atthisstage,thefunconalityofthesolenoidvalve
canbetestedbypressingthesolenoidtestbuonlocatedon
theupperleofthecircuitboard.Manuallydepressing(and
holding)thisbuonwillcompletetheelectricalcircuitandwill
openthenormallyclosedsolenoidvalve.Youshouldbeableto
heartheacvaonofthesolenoidvalveatthisstagetoensure
thevalveisfunconingproperly(seeFig.4).
Step 3) MakesureyourUVcontrollerisunpluggedfromthe
powersource.Oncealltheseconneconshavebeenmade,
axthemaleIEPplugofthesolenoidmodulecableintothe
IEPportonthecontroller(seeFig.5),oranyotheravailable
IEPportsuchastheUVsensor,4-20mAmoduleorremote
alarmmodule.ItdoesnotmaerwhichIEPportanymodule
isaachedto,aslongastheyareaached.
OPERATION
Step 1) PlugtheBLACKCOMBcontrollerintothepower
sourceandmakesurethesolenoidmoduleisacvatedon
thecontroller.Duringthestart-upsequence,theSOLENOID
MODULEscreenwillindicatea“inialized”whenthemodule
isacvatedproperly(seeFig.6).

Step 2) Thecontrollerwillonlynofyyouwhenthereisafailure
modewherebythesolenoidmodule(andconnectedsolenoidvalve)
willbeacvated.OntheBLACKCOMB5.1system,thesolenoid
modulewillbeacvated(shungotheowofwater)uponLAMP
FAILURE(seeFig.7).Toremedythis,replacetheUVlampandrestart
thesystemasperthedireconsoutlinedintheOwner’sManual.
Step 3) OntheBLACKCOMB6.1systemwhereaUVsensorisinstalled,
thesolenoidmodulewillbeacvated(shungotheowofwater)
uponaLOWUVcondion(lessthan50%)(seeFig.8).Toremedythis,
youwillneedtoaddressthereasonforthislowUVcondionwhich
may be due to a dirty UV sensor and quartz sleeve, a lamp that is
not eming enough UV energy, or a change in the water quality.
PleaserefertotheUVsystemsOwner’sManualforcorrecveacon
procedures.

Step 4) To determine what posion the solenoid valve is currently in, the solenoid module
incorporates three lights on the circuit board (see Fig. 9). When the solenoid is in the OPEN
posionagreenlightwillappearonthecircuitboardbesidetheword“OPEN”.Whenthevalve
isCLOSED,aredlightwillappearonthecircuitboardbesidetheword“CLOSED”.Andwhenthe
solenoidisinanOVERRIDEposion,anamberlightwillappearonthecircuitboardbesidethe
word“OVERRIDEON”.

Boil Water Advisory: If any failure occurs on a BLACKCOMB UV system, the water
must not be used for human consumpon unl the system is returned to a safe operaonal
mode. If the water is used for human consumpon during this period, the water must be
boiled (minimum 20 minutes at a full boil) prior to consumpon.
EMERGENCY BYPASS
Inacasewherethesolenoidvalvehasbeenacvated(valveisclosedandnowaterisallowed
toow),thesolenoidmodulehastheabilitytobypassthesolenoidvalveincaseofan
emergencyneedofwater.Toiniatethisbypass,depressthebuonlabeled“OVERRIDE”
locatedinthelowerleporonofthecircuitboard(seeFig.10)

Oncethisbuonhasbeenpressed,thesystemwillremaininthis
overridemoderegardlessofwhetherornotthecondioncausingthe
solenoidacvaonhasbeenremediedornot.Toresetthesystem,
thepowertothecontrollermustbeshutoandrestarted.While
inthisoverridemodethecontrollerwillintermientlydisplayared
“SOLENOIDOVERRIDE”screen(seeFig.11).

DISABLING EMERGENCY BYPASS
Incertainregulatedapplicaons,theavailability,anduse,
oftheemergencybypassfeaturemaybeinviolaonofthe
local,state/provincialcodes.Ifthisisthecase,thebypass
featurecaneasilybedisabledbyphysicallyremovingthe
bypassbuon.Toaccomplishthis,carefullyuseapairof
needlenosepliersandphysicallyremovetheactualbypass
buon(marked“OVERRIDE”)fromthecircuitboard.

Intheeventthereisanissuewiththesolenoidconneconfrom
theIEPcabletothecontroller,thesystemwillregistera“SOLENOID
FAILURE”screenonthecontroller(seeFig.12).
CAUTION: BEFORE PERFORMING ANY
WORK ON THE SOLENOID MODULE, THE
POWER CORD MUST BE DISCONNECTED
FROM ITS POWER SOURCE (WALL PLUG).
