KLASCHKA KB 7.11 BDK 1/5
Features
One-channel compact Double Sheet Monitor for the connec-
tion of one sensor for single-surface contact measurement of
ferrous (Fe) sheets.
Application
The BDK Compact Double Sheet Monitor can be used wher-
ever you need to be sure that ferrous metal sheets do not
exceed a specified thickness (double sheet), and/ or to trans-
mit the measured sheet thickness as an analogue value for
processing in a control system.
Configuration
The Double Sheet Monitor has a sturdy plastic housing. The
ready-made connecting leads permit quick and easy connec-
tion of the metal thickness sensor. A 9-pole M23 connector
allows to connect the supply voltage, the controlling signals
and the analogue output.
Mounting
instructions
The sensor can be mounted into the suction cup of the grip-
per or into a monitoring station. For measurement, the com-
plete sensing face of the sensor must be covered by the
sheet.
Mode of operation
The metal thickness sensor DSP for single-surface, non-
contact measurement is used to monitor sheets for double
thicknesses in the range 0.15 to 4 mm. During measure-
ment, an excitation coil generates a strong magnetic field.
The sheet is briefly drawn towards the coil and magnetised
to saturation. A sensor coil measures the magnetic flux, the
evaluation device linearises the measured value and trans-
forms it into an analogue voltage. Measurement can be
started by an external signal or pressing a key on the control
panel. If a continuous start signal is employed, measurement
is carried out every 500 ms.
The teaching in of the current sheet which is to be monitored
takes place by the control panel or the external Teach-In sig-
nal. During this learning procedure three measurements take
place. The resulting sheet thickness is stored as reference
value. When the measured sheet is more than 1.3 times
thicker than the reference sheet, „Double sheet“ is signalled.
When the measured sheet is more than 0.5 times thinner
than the reference sheet, „No sheet“ is signalled. When a
double sheet is detected, the switching output for 1 sheet
changes from Hi to Lo.
Operation
The four operator keys on the front panel of the device allow
to operate the BDK:
Start Manual start of a measurement
- Decrement limit-value or calibrate Zero-value
+ Increment limit-value or calibrate End-value
Teach Programming of the reference sheet
Display
In addition, 5 LEDs indicate the result of the current meas-
urement.
Light Fields:
Measurement Lights up during the measurement
Sensor Lights up when sheet is detected by the
sensor
0-sheet Lights up if no sheet is in front of the
sensor or the measured value is below
the lower value.
1-sheet Lights up on output of 1-sheet message
2-sheets Lights up on output of 2-sheet message

Commissioning
When the device is used for the first time or when a compo-
nent of the system is changed, a calibration of the system
(range of measurement) has to be performed. For this, the
zero value (value without sheet) and the end value – with a
4 mm sheet (DSP -54sg-2s) – must be programmed. When
using the DSP -36sg-2s, the programming takes place with a
2 mm sheet.
The calibration will be performed as follows:
Remove the sheet from the sensor and press the button “-“
for 2 seconds until the LED 0-sheet lights up. Keep then the
button “-“ pressed and press “Start”. The device will now
automatically perform three measurements and calculate the
zero value. Place then the 4 mm or 2 mm sheet on the sen-
sor (will be attached to the respective sensor) and press the
button “+” for 2 seconds until the LED “2-sheets“ lights up.
Keep then the button “+“ pressed and press “Start”. Again,
three measurements will be performed and the end value be
calculated. A reference sheet is delivered together with the
sensor.
Timing diagram: commissioning
Teach-In
The programming of the sheet to be monitored can take
place either by an external signal like a PLC-signal or by
pushing the button “Teach” on the front panel of the device.
For this function the respective sheet has to be placed on the
sensor.
Internal programming through the front panel:
Place the sheet on the sensor and push the button „Teach”
for 2 seconds until only the LED “1-sheet” lights up. Keep
then the button “Teach” pressed and press “Start”. Three
measurements take place automatically for the calculation of
the threshold value.
External programming through the controller:
Place the sheet on the sensor and supply a 24 V signal to
the input for Teach-in for more than 1 second. After one sec-
ond the LED 1-sheet lights up and the device will perform the
measurements and calculation of threshold like described for
internal programming.
The threshold for double sheet detection lies thereby at the
1.3-fold thickness value of the reference sheet. The thres-
hold can be changed manually in 10 % steps using the but-
ton “Teach” and the two buttons “+” and “-”. The three LEDs
for “0-, 1- and 2-sheet(s)” indicate the set threshold. For a
short time (appox. 5 s) during the setup or by a short touch of
the button “Teach” the analogue output delivers in addition
the set threshold value for double sheet detection.
