•CHIRP Technology
Gyro-stabilization of the Imagenex Model 881A-GS makes the high resolution 881A
sonar into a system capable of crystal clear visualization of the ocean environment from moving
platforms, no longer compromised by the blurring effects of host vehicle rotation. An advanced,
low drift gyro is integrated directly into the sonar head, so the sonar can now compensate for
vehicle motion in real time with unprecedented accuracy, stability, and robustness.
The enhanced capabilities of the 881A-GS have not compromised the performance of the
881A sonar. On short range, this sonar scans using a 2 mm range resolution, and can auto-adjust
acoustic frequency and resolution to scan up to a 200 m radius, 360° surrounding area.
The Model 881A-GS still has low power, simple set-up, and small size that make it an
ideal tool for large work ROV’s and small inspection vehicles. On it’s own it is now an amazingly
simple drop sonar and borehole inspection package: just add a laptop computer and power
supply and run the included Imagenex software.

Model 881A-GS Setup Gu de 1.0 Introduct on
1.0 Introduction
The Model 881A-GS s an advanced gyro-stab l zed, h gh-resolut on scann ng sonar system that has been des gned to prov de s mple,
rel able, and accurate representat on of underwater mages.
2.0 Getting Started:
The 881A-GS was des gned to be user fr endly and s mple to set up n the f eld. It s generally recommended however to perform a
prel m nary setup before head ng out nto the f eld.
2.1 Step-By-Step Start Up Guide
1. Phys cally mount the sonar referr ng to Section 2.4 on page 5 for deta ls.
2. Ensure 24VDC@ 1A m n mum power supply s off
3. Referr ng to Appendix A – USB Converters and the Windows OS, conf gure any necessary adaptors.
4. Connect the cable's DB9 connector to the PC’s ser al port.
5. Plug the underwater connector to the sonar.
6. Deploy to stable, flat locat on
7. Power up the 881A-GS.
8. Wa t for gyro cal brat on to complete. The sonar, upon power up, w ll cal brate the motor, delay for 10 seconds and
automat cally perform a gyro cal brat on. No commun cat on to the gyro sub system s ava lable at th s t me.
9. Ver fy the “Local Latitude” sett ng n the “. n ” f le and adjust f necessary. Refer to Section 2.5.2 on page 11 for deta ls
10. Launch the “Win881AL.exe” program
If f le playback s des red, use the menu command “File->Open File to Playback”.
If real-t me operat on s des red, use the menu command “File->Connect to Sonar Head”.
11. Proceed to Section 2.5 on page 6 for software nstruct ons.

Model 881A-GS Setup Gu de 2.2 Gyro Cal brat on
2.2 Gyro Calibration
All gyros are sens t ve to the env ronment ( .e. temperature, mot on, Earth's rotat on, etc.) and w ll naturally dr ft w th t me. Therefore,
from t me to t me, t s recommended to ssue a gyro cal brat on ( n manual mode) or recal brate the motor (auto mode) to remove the
accumulated dr ft.
2.2.1 Automatic Gyro Calibration
Imagenex Gyro enabled scann ng sonars now ncorporate an automat c gyro b as ng feature wh ch s selectable n the user program.
Th s mode cont nuously re-b as's the gyro n real t me accommodat ng for temperature fluctuat ons and nternal dr ft. Refer to Table
2.1 on page 6 for deta ls on enabl ng / d sabl ng th s mode. When f rst start ng the sonar, the b as adjustment w ll be very rap d as the
temperature stab l zes. Wh le the gyro w ll st ll nternally dr ft, the sonar mage w ll be coherent, allow ng the operator to cont nue to
work. Note that the absolute head ng w ll not be exact dur ng th s t me as the sonar does not d fferent ate between nduced dr ft and
real movement. After a few m nutes, re-cal brate the motor to real gn the sonar and the transducer. Th s w ll reset the accumulated dr ft
that occurred dur ng the warmup per od. It s recommended to per od cally re- ssue the cal brate motor command to reset the
accumulated dr ft.
2.2.2 Manual Gyro Calibration
The nformat on below descr bes the manual b as ng mode wh ch may be necessary n strong magnet c f eld env ronments.
Do not cal brate the gyro unt l the nternal temperature of the sonar has stab l zed, approx mately 30-60m nutes underwater.
1. Mount sonar on a level, stable surface, or settle the ROV on a flat bottom.
2. Under the “Options” Menu, select “Calibrate yro”.
3. Standard sonar operat on s suspended dur ng gyro cal brat on.
4. The message “Calibrating yro” w ll appear. Cal brat on takes approx mately 30secs.
5. Once the message d sappears, standard operat on commences.
When us ng MANUAL b as ng, It s ESSENTIAL that the sonar s completely stat onary and at constant temperature
dur ng gyro cal brat on. ANY movement w ll cause undes rable dr ft n the gyro.

2.3 Overview
Wh le trad t onal scann ng sonars prov de excellent magery, they have a s gn f cant short com ng...they rely on the sonar be ng
perfectly st ll dur ng data acqu s t on. Imagenex has developed the deal solut on...the 881A-GS. F gure 2.1, below, shows a non
stab l zed mage taken wh le the sonar was sp nn ng. Note the wavy l nes n the lower 2 quadrants. Now refer to the same area scanned
w th Gyro stab l zat on enabled (F gure 2.2, below). Now the mage s well def ned and stra ght.
