1. ANNOUNCEMENTS

Dependency on June, 2000 Quality Pack for HP-UX 11.00: The Quality Pack for

HP-UX 11.00 (June 2000) should be installed in order to use this release of

OpenGL.

The box containing the December, 2002 "HP-UX 11.0 Install and Core OS" CD-ROM

will also hold a second CD-ROM entitled "HP-UX 11.0 Core Operating Systems

Options." The OpenGL run-time and developer's products are both available on

the "HP-UX 11.0 Core Operating Systems Options" CD-ROM in the "Graphics and

Technical Computing Software" bundle.

The version of OpenGL shipped with the HP-UX 11.0 Additional Core

Enhancements (ACE) December, 2002 release is supported on Series 700 and 800

computers.

2. WHAT'S IN THIS VERSION?

The version of OpenGL shipped with the HP-UX 11.0 Additional Core

Enhancements (ACE) December, 2002 release is basically the same as the

version shipped with the July, 1999 Workstation ACE for HP-UX 10.20. The

following changes have been made:

* Support of New Devices: hp Fire GL-UX

Note: 2D/3D Distributed Single Logical Screen (SLS/d) for OpenGL is not

supported with this release.

See the following documentation for more information:

* The "Addenda -- Additional Graphics Information" section of this document

* "OpenGL Implementation Guide"

* "Graphics Administration Guide"

* OpenGL and Common Graphics Release Notes located in

/opt/graphics/common/newconfig/opt/graphics/common

These documents can also be viewed at http://www.hp.com/visualize/support.

3. KNOWN PROBLEMS AND WORKAROUNDS

N/A

4. COMPATIBILITY AND INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS

* Software Requirements

The version of OpenGL shipped with the HP-UX 11.0 Additional Core

Enhancements (ACE) December 2002 release requires use of the HP-UX 11.0

Additional Core Enhancements (ACE) December 2002 release or

later, and the corresponding X11 release.

* Hardware Requirements

The HP-UX 11.0 Additional Core Enhancements (ACE) December 2002 release

supports 3D graphics APIs on both Series 700 and 800 computers.

For detailed information about supported graphics configurations (HP-UX

computers combined with bit-mapped graphics devices) consult the "Graphics

Administration Guide" (see above).

* Operating System Platform Requirements

Users who want to take advantage of the updates to the HP-UX 11.0 Additional

Core Enhancements (ACE) December 2002 release must update to this new

release.

* Disk Space Requirements

Use swinstall to determine necessary and available disk space for the 3D

graphics API you wish to install.

* New Version of OpenGL

The OpenGL library that supports the new hp Fire GL-UX graphics device is

completely different than the OpenGL libraries that support the HP-VISUALIZE

family of graphics devices. The new OpenGL library is compatible with all

current OpenGL applications.

5. PATCHES AND FIXES IN THIS VERSION

The version of OpenGL shipped with the HP-UX 11.0 Additional Core

Enhancements (ACE) (December 2002) release incorporates all cumulative

patches and bug fixes contained in the most recent OpenGL periodic patch.

6. PRODUCT/RELEASE MATRIX

For information about supported devices and HP-UX operating system releases,

consult the latest edition of the OpenGL Documentation Web Page located on

the current Release Media or at http://www.hp.com/visualize/support.

7. SOFTWARE AVAILABILITY IN NATIVE LANGUAGES

Localization is not planned for any 3D graphics API or the corresponding

documentation in the HP-UX 11.0 Additional Core Enhancements (ACE) December

2002 release.

8. TRADEMARKS

Not applicable.

9. ADDENDA -- ADDITIONAL GRAPHICS INFORMATION

hp Fire GL-UX Information

=========================

The hp Fire GL-UX graphics device is HP's new high-end 3D graphics product.

This device is supported on the following HP workstations:

* C3650

* C3700

* J6000

* J6700

The hp Fire GL-UX requires one of the following releases:

* For 11.X-based computers: HP-UX 11.0 Additional Core Enhancements (ACE)

December 2002 release or later.

The attributes of the hp Fire GL-UX device are:

* 8 Overlay planes

* 48 Image planes (for 24-plane single buffered or 24/24

double-buffered rendering)

* A total of 5 hardware color maps (1 image, 4 overlay)

* Supported Overlay visuals are:

- Depth 8 PseudoColor

* Supported Image visuals are:

- Depth 24 TrueColor

For more information on this device, see the "OpenGL Implementation Guide"

and the "Graphics Administration Guide."

Threads Information

===================

HP OpenGL supports Level 2 threads for this release. This means HP OpenGL can

be used in a threaded application. More than one thread can use OpenGL. A

given context can only be current in one thread at

a given time.

Note that using OpenGL graphics in a Kernel threaded application requires

that the application link with libpthread.sl (not the archived version,

libpthread.a). Also note that OpenGL libraries are not cancel safe or fork

safe.

For more information on using threads, see the following documentation:

* The http://devresource.hp.com web site (see "Threads and Multiprocessing")

* The "OpenGL Programming Guide"

* The "OpenGL Reference Manual"

* "Threadtime" by S. Norton and M. Dipasquale

64-bit Computing Information

======================

64-bit applications are supported with OpenGL for this release. Applications

using 64-bit computing are supported on SPUs with 64-bit capabilities only;

they are not supported on 32-bit SPUs.

For information on porting your application to take advantage of 64-bit

capabilities, see the http://devresource.hp.com web site. See the links to

"64-bit Computing" and "Porting."

Note that 64-bit OpenGL allows "large data space" because the pointers are

now 64-bit. But, the OpenGL data types themselves are the same as the 32-bit

library. For example, GLint is a 32-bit integer, not a 64-bit long.

All 64-bit OpenGL libraries are located in:

/opt/graphics/OpenGL/lib/pa20_64.

The following sample compile and link lines may help you to build your

application once it has been ported to take advantage of 64-bit capabilities.

* Sample 32-bit compile and link:

cc -Ae -z -I/opt/graphics/OpenGL/include -I/usr/include/X -o cube.32 \

cube.c -L/opt/graphics/OpenGL/lib -L/usr/lib/X11R6 -lGLU -lGL -lXhp11 \

-lXext -lX11 -lm -ldld

* Sample 64-bit compile and link:

cc -Ae +DA2.0W -z -I/opt/graphics/OpenGL/include \

-I/usr/include/X11R6 -Wl,+compat -o cube.64 cube.c \

-L/opt/graphics/OpenGL/lib/pa20_64 \

-L/usr/lib/X11R6/pa20_64 -L/usr/lib/pa20_64 \

-L/usr/lib /usr/lib/pa20_64/libdld.sl \

-lGLU -lGL -lXhp11 -lXext -lX11 -lm
