SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
1 SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
Appropriate use
The junction box is to be used exclusively for interconnecting the interfaces, the power
supply and the bus termination. Use for any purpose other than the above shall be
deemed to be not in accordance with the regulations.
In the interests of safety, the junction box should only be used as described in the Mount
ing Instructions. It is also essential to comply with the legal and safety requirements for
the application concerned during use. The same applies to the use of accessories.
The junction box is not a safety element as defined under Appropriate use. For safe and
trouble‐free operation, this junction box must not only be correctly transported, stored,
sited and installed, but must also be carefully operated and maintained.
General dangers of failing to follow the safety instructions
The junction box is a state of the art unit and as such is fail‐safe. The junction box may
give rise to further dangers if it is inappropriately installed and operated by untrained
personnel.
Any person instructed to carry out installation, commissioning, maintenance or repair of a
junction box must have read and understood the Mounting Instructions and in particular
the technical safety instructions.
Remaining dangers
The scope of supply and list of components provided with the junction box cover only
part of the scope of connection technique. In addition, equipment planners, installers and
operators should plan, implement and respond to the safety engineering considerations
of connection technique in such a way as to minimize remaining dangers. Prevailing regu
lations must be complied with at all times. There must be reference to the remaining dan
gers connected with connection technique.
Unauthorized conversions and modifications are prohibited
The junction box must not be modified from the design or safety engineering point of
view except with our express agreement. Any modification shall exclude all liability on our
part for any resulting damage.
Qualified personnel
The junction box is only to be installed by qualified personnel strictly in accordance with
the technical data and with the rules and safety regulations which follow. It is also essen
tial to comply with the legal and safety requirements for the application concerned. The
same applies to the use of accessories.

SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
4
Qualified personnel means persons entrusted with the installation, assembly, commis
sioning and operation of the product who possess the appropriate qualifications for their
function.
Conditions on site
Do not allow the junction box to become dirty or damp.
Maintenance
The junction box is designed to provide degree of protection IP65 (dust protection,
protection against water jets). You must make regular checks to ensure that the rubber
seal in the cover and the screw connections is not leaking.
Accident prevention
The relevant accident prevention regulations must be taken into consideration.
Neither the design of the device nor any technical safety aspects may be modified with
out the express permission of Hottinger Brüel & Kjaer GmbH. Any modification excludes
Hottinger Brüel & Kjaer GmbH from any and all liability for any damage resulting there
from.
It is strictly forbidden to carry out any repairs and soldering work on the motherboards or
to replace any components. Repairs may only be carried out by persons authorized
thereto by Hottinger Brüel & Kjaer GmbH.
SDuring installation and when connecting the cables, take action to prevent electro
static discharge as this may damage the electronics.
SThe required power supply is an extra‐low voltage (6...30 V) with safe disconnection
from the mains.
SWhen connecting additional devices, comply with the safety requirements for electri
cal measurement, control, regulatory and laboratory equipment (EN61010).
SAll the interconnecting cables must be screened cables. The screen must be con
nected extensively to ground on both sides.

INTRODUCTION AND APPROPRIATE USE
6
3 INTRODUCTION AND APPROPRIATE USE
The VK... junction box is used to interconnect the serial interfaces (RS‐485), the power
supply and the RS‐485 bus termination.
It is preferable for the following HBM products to be wired in the RS‐485 bus:
SDigital transducers: C16i, FIT
SDigital transducer electronics: AED9101B, AED9201A
SDigital measurement chains with transducer electronics PAD-RS485, AD105D-RS485,
AD112D-RS485
SScale electronics WTX110-D with digital transducers.
The RS‐485 bus can be wired as a 2‐wire‐ or a 4‐wire bus. The form of connection to be
used will depend on the particular type of digital transducer or measuring amplifier (see
the respective Operating Manuals).
HBM product RS‐485 bus
C16i 4‐wire
FIT 4‐wire
AED9101B 2 / 4‐wire
AED9201A 4‐wire
PAD-RS485, AD112D-RS485 4‐wire
AD105D-RS485 2‐wire
WTX110-D 4‐wire
Up to eight digital transducers / measuring amplifiers can be connected together to a
VK... (connections Load Cell 1..8). The cable to the control computer is connected to the
Output clamp.
If several junction boxes are needed in a bus, up to 7 digital transducers / measuring am
plifiers can be connected to a VK... (connections Load Cell 1..7). Connection Load Cell 8 is
then used to connect to the first junction box. The cable to the control computer is con
nected to the Output clamp.

MECHANICAL CONSTRUCTION
4 MECHANICAL CONSTRUCTION
The junction box has the following functions:
SMechanical protection (IP65)
SPower supply for the electrical bus termination
STransducer excitation
SBus operation for 2‐wire and 4‐wire RS‐485 serial interfaces
SEMC‐tested
The connection cable exits the casing via screw connections.

4.1 Mounting
The VK... junction boxes should preferably be mounted such that the cable bushings
point downward (see mounting direction, Fig. 4.2). In this way, better protection against
ingress of water is provided.
