Carbonmonoxideisadangerous,poisonous
gas that kills hundreds of people each year
and injures many more. It is often referred
toasthesilentkillerbecauseithasnoodour
ortasteandcannotbeseen.Likeoxygen,CO
entersthebodythroughthelungsduringthe
normalbreathingprocess.Itcompeteswith
oxygenbyreplacingitintheredbloodcells,
therebyreducingtheowofoxygentothe
heart, brain and other vital organs. In high
concentrations,COcankillinminutes.
Many cases of reported carbon monoxide
poisoning indicate that while victims
are aware they are not feeling well, they
become disorientated and unable to save
themselvesbyeitherexitingthebuildingor
callingforassistance.Exposureduringsleep
isparticularlydangerousbecausethevictim
usuallydoesnotwakeup.
Symptoms of CO poisoning
The following symptoms may be related to
COpoisoningwhichallhouseholdmembers
shouldbemadeawareof:
•Mild Exposure:Slightheadache,nausea,
vomiting,fatigue(oftendescribedas
‘u-like’symptoms).
•Medium Exposure:Severethrobbing
headache,drowsiness,confusion,fast
heartrate.
•Extreme Exposure: Unconsciousness,
convulsions,cardiorespiratoryfailure,
death.
Your FireAngel CO detector monitors the
levelofCOaspartspermillion(ppm)inthe
atmospheresurroundingthedetector.
35ppm Themaximumallowable
concentrationforcontinuous
exposureforhealthyadults
inany8hourperiod,as
recommendedbythe
OccupationalSafetyandHealth
Administration(OSHA).
200ppm Slightheadache,fatigue,
dizziness,nauseaafter2-3
hours.
400ppm Frontalheadacheswithin1-2
hours,lifethreateningafter3
hours.
800ppm Dizziness,nauseaand
convulsionswithin45minutes.
Unconsciousnesswithin2hours.
Deathwithin2-3hours.
ShouldyoususpectCOmaybeaectingyou
oryourfamily,openthedoorsandwindows
of your property to ventilate, turn o your
appliances and evacuate the premises.
At this time the authorities should be
contactedtolocatethesourceofthecarbon
monoxide before re-entering the building
(for usefull contact numbers see page 17).
Medical attention should be sought for
anyonesueringtheeectsofCOpoisoning
(headache,nausea,seepage3).

WARNING: This FireAngel carbon
monoxidedetectorisnotacombustible
gas detector, nor a smoke detector. Please
install the proper detectors to detect
combustiblegases,orsmoke.
This CO detector should not be seen as a
substitute for the proper installation, use,
andmaintenanceoffuel-burningappliances
(including appropriate ventilation and
exhaust systems), nor the sweeping of
chimneys.
WARNING: Variables relating to your
fuel buring appliances can change at
any point eg. the ue or chimney could
suddenly become blocked or damaged,
appliances may stop running correctly or
circumstances in neighbouring properties
may change resulting in the presence of
carbonmonoxide.Forthisandotherreasons
do not use this carbon monoxide detector
on an intermittent basis, or as a portable
detectorfortryingtotraceonesourceofthe
spillage of combustion products from fuel-
burningappliancesorfromchimneys.

YOUR DETECTOR
ThisCOalarmissuitableforuseindomestic
premises, caravan holiday homes, caravans
andmotorcaravans.
The following advice is applicable to all
intended applications, there are special
instructionsattheendofthissectionrelating
to positioning in caravan holiday homes,
caravansandmotorcaravans.
WARNING: This detector will only
indicate the presence of carbon
monoxide gas at the sensor. Carbon
monoxidegasmaybepresentinotherareas.
In which room should the detector be
installed?
Ideally, an apparatus should be installed
in every room containing a fuel burning
appliance. Additional apparatus may be
installed to ensure that adequate warning
is given for occupants in other rooms, by
locatingapparatusin:
• Remoteroomsinwhichtheoccupant(s)
spendconsiderabletimewhilstawake
andfromwhichtheymaynotbeable
hearanalarmfromapparatusinanother
partofthepremises,and
• Everysleepingroom.
However,ifthereisafuelburningappliance
inmore thanoneroomandthe numberof
apparatus is limited, the following points
shouldbeconsideredwhendecidingwhere
besttoputtheapparatus:
• Locatetheapparatusinaroom
containingauelessoropen-ued
appliance,and
• Locateapparatusinaroomwherethe
occupant(s)spendmosttime.
• Ifthedomesticpremisesisabedsit(a
singleroomservingasbothsittingand
bedroom)thentheapparatusshouldbe
putasfarfromthecookingappliances
aspossiblebutneartowheretheperson
sleeps.

• Iftheapplianceisinaroomnotnormally
used(forexampleaboilerroom),the
apparatusshouldbeputjustoutsidethe
roomsothatthealarmmaybeheard
moreeasily.Alternatively,aremotealarm
sirenmaybeconnectedtoatypeA
apparatuslocatedinaroom(s)containing
afuel-burningappliance.
Where in the room should I place the
detector?
Apparatus located in the same room as a
fuel-burningappliance:
Forbothwallandceilingmountedapparatus
thefollowingapplies:
aTheapparatusshouldbeatahorizontal
distanceofbetween1mand3mfromthe
potentialsource.
bIfthereisapartitioninaroom,the
apparatusshouldbelocatedonthesame
sideofthepartitionasthepotential
source.
cCarbonMonoxidedetectorsinroomswith
slopedceilingsshouldbelocatedatthe
highsideoftheroom.
Inadditiontotheabovethefollowingmust
beobserved:
Iftheapparatusislocatedonawall:
aitshouldbelocatedclosetotheceiling;
bitshouldbelocatedataheightgreater
thantheheightofanydoororwindow;
citshouldbeatleast150mmfromthe
ceiling.
Iftheapparatusislocatedontheceiling:
aitshouldbeatleast300mmfromany
wallandanyceilingobstructione.g.light
ttings.
Apparatuslocatedinsleepingroomsandin
roomsremotefromafuelburningappliance:
Apparatus located in sleeping rooms or
located in rooms remote from the fuel-
burning appliance should be located
relativelyclosetothebreathingzoneofthe
occupants.
Where not to put the detector
Theapparatusshouldnotbeinstalled:
• Inanenclosedspace(forexampleina
cupboardorbehindacurtain).
• Whereitcanbeobstructed(forexample
byfurniture).
• Directlyaboveasink
• Nexttoadoororwindow
• Nexttoanextractorfan
• Nexttoanairventorothersimilar
ventilationopenings
• Inanareawherethetemperaturemay
dropbelow-10°Corexceed40°C
• Wheredirtanddustmayblockthesensor
• Inadamporhumidlocation(forexample
inabathroom)
• Intheimmediatevicinityofthecooking
appliance
• Indirectsunlight,asthiscouldaect
theaccuracyofthetemperaturedisplay
considerably
• Within1m(3feet)ofmobilephones

HOW TO INSTALL YOUR
DETECTOR
NOTE:Thisapparatusshouldbeinstalled
byacompetentpersonwhofeelsableto
installitaccordingtotheinstructions.
Firstly write the installation date on
your detector in the area provided. We
recommendthatyourdetectorisinstalledon
thewall.
To mount on a wall or ceiling:
Please ensure that you use the screws
provided, as they were chosen specically
forusewiththisproduct.Usethetemplate
below for guidance on marking hole
positions.Drillholesintothewall.Insertthe
plasticwallplugs.Screwinthescrews.Ensure
screwsareprotrudingfromthewallby3mm
toallowdetectortoslotontoscrews.
To place on a shelf:
Thebaseofthedetectorhasbeendesigned
toallowittostandfreelyonashelf.
WARNING: When placing on a shelf,
please adhere to the same positional
recommendations as described on pages 5
and6.

Caravansmayhaveadditionalrisksofcarbon
monoxideingressthroughairventsdue
tothenearbypresenceofothervehicles,
engines,generatorsorbarbecues,however
thisdoesnotchangethebasicguidance
onlocationofthealarm.Caravansshould
bettedwithanalarminthesameroom
asanycombustionappliance(s),located
inaccordancewithpreviousadviceinthis
section.Ifthecaravanhasasingleliving
spacewhichincorporatesthesleeping
accommodation,itcanbeconsideredto
beequivalenttoabedsit,andasingle
alarmissucient.However,anysleeping
accommodationwhichisinaseparateroom
fromthecombustionappliance(s)should
alsocontainanalarm,locatedinaccordance
withpreviousadviceinthissection.
Itisnotalwayspossibletondanoptimum
locationforanapparatus,forexample,a
smallcaravanmaynothavesuitablevertical
surfacesavailable.Nevertheless,when
ttinganapparatusinsuchsituations,the
twomostimportantconsiderationswhen
selectinganappropriatelocationare:
• Notmountingtheapparatusdirectly
aboveasourceofheatorsteam;and
• Mountingtheapparatusatadistance
of1–3mfromthenearestedgeofthe
potentialsource.

POWER PACK
ACTIVATION
See diagram opposite
a Yourdetectorcomescompletewithan
integratedpowerpackthatwillprovide
powerforitsentireoperationallife.To
activatethepowerpackyouneedtopull
thedisablingtab(seeimage).Thiswill
inturnpulloutthemetaldisablingclip,
whichisattachedtotheendofthetab,
fromthedisablingsocketwhichissituated
ontheundersideofthedetector.Retain
thedisablingtabforfutureusebytaping
ittopage22ofthismanual.
bWhenthedetectorisactivatedthescreen
willdisplayalloftheicons,thenaftera
fewsecondswillshowthecurrentCO
level.ThepowerindicatorLEDbelowthe
symbolwillalsoashgreenonce
everyminutetoindicatethatthedetector
isreceivingpowerfromthepowerpack
andisfullyoperational.A symbol
willalsoashbrieyontheLCDscreen
approximatelyonceeveryminute.
c Testthesounder,powerpackandcircuitry
bypushingthecentreoftheTest/Mode
buttonbrieytoconrmthatthedetector
isoperatingproperly.Thesounderwill
soundassoonasthebuttonispressed,
andtheAlarmLEDwillilluminatered
indicatingthatthesounderisworking
andthepowerpackisprovidingpower
totheunit.You’llnoticethatthedisplay
willswitchtotemperaturemode,thisis
explainedlaterinthemanual,pressthe
buttonagaintoreturntotheCOdisplay.
Thistestforthesounder,powerpackand
circuitryshouldbeperformedonaweekly
basisandshouldbecontinuedforthe
lifetimeoftheproduct.
WARNING: Prolonged exposure to the
sounderincloseproximitytoyourears
maydamageyourhearing.
Under normal operating conditions, the
power pack will last for the lifetime of the
producti.e.7years.
Thedetectorwillnotprotectagainsttherisk
of carbon monoxide poisoning when the
powerpackhasdrained.
WARNING: Prolonged exposure to
extremehighorlowtemperaturesmay
reducethelifeofthepowerpack.
