manua does not provide directions for diving with c osed circuit rebreather

equipment. This manua is on y intended to be a guide for the proper

maintenance, setup, operation, and basic service of the O2ptima

rebreather.

 As with any piece of equipment, this rebreather wi eventua y fai . Even

carefu maintenance, assemb y, and testing wi not prevent this from

happening. It is possib e that any part of this unit may fail at any time.

Because of this, it is essentia that a separate, independent bai out system

be taken by the diver on every dive. The bai out system must be configured

to a ow safe termination of the dive and return to the surface in the event

of a ma function at any point during the dive.

 A components of the rebreather must be in good working order and be

carefu y maintained, assemb ed, and tested to reduce the risk of fai ure.

 Participation in rebreather diving can resu t in serious injury or death.

These risks can be reduced, but never e iminated.

 Know edge and training are the best too s for avoiding accidents.

 Rebreather diving is a physica y as we as menta y demanding activity.

 If you do not have adequate training, equipment, physica conditioning, and

proper mind-set, do not get in the water.

 As the diver, YOU have the final responsibility for your own actions and

safety whi e using this rebreather.

Introduction

Congratu ations on your purchase of the O2ptima rebreather! First produced in ate 2005, the O2ptima

has been a eader in the rebreather market for over a decade. During that time it has been used for

cutting edge exp oration and wor d c ass expeditions a over the p anet. Dive Rite has made a strong

commitment to ensuring that it is one of the most re iab e, capab e, and high performing rebreathers on

the market. The O2ptima design continues to evo ve as refinements are made and new techno ogy

becomes avai ab e. We are certain that this unit wi provide you with many unforgettab e hours

exp oring your underwater wor d.

Design Philosophy

The design parameters for the O2ptima were simp e:

 Keep the breathing oop as short as possib e

 Use proven, state of the art e ectronics

 Be fu y compatib e with the Micropore ExtendAir cartridge

 Maintain a rugged and durab e package in the sma est profi e possib e

These parameters were origina y chosen in order to produce a rebreather idea y suited to underwater

cave exp oration. The unique cha enges of the cave environment demanded a unit that was as safe and

re iab e as possib e whi e maintaining a minima profi e. The end resu t was a rebreather that is not on y

high y suitab e for cave diving, but a so any other type of technica diving where a direct ascent to the

surface is not a ways possib e.

By uti izing a horizonta y mounted scrubber canister behind the divers head, the breathing oop was

kept as short as possib e. This he ps to create the owest possib e work of breathing and a ows the use

of sma er diameter oop hoses. This in turn increases comfort and reduces diver fatigue. Mounting the

scrubber canister at the highest point of the oop has the additiona advantage of reducing the ike ihood

of water entering the scrubber. This, combined with the use of the Micropore ExtendAir cartridge,

great y reduces the possibi ity of a “caustic cocktai .”

The O2ptima now uti izes Shearwater e ectronics for their proven and unpara e ed re iabi ity and

functiona ity.

System verview

The O2ptima is an e ectronica y contro ed, constant PPO2, fu y c osed circuit rebreather (eCCR). It has

bui t-in decompression ca cu ation and mixed gas capabi ities. The fo owing features come standard on

the unit:

 Back mounted counter ungs with 6.5 Liter oop vo ume

 Redundant Shearwater DiveCAN e ectronics inc uding heads-up disp ay (HUD) and Petre 2

 Dua use scrubber canister design that can be used with Micropore ExtendAir cartridges or

packed with oose CO2 absorbent

 Divesoft BOV + ADV + MAVs standard (a -in-one Bai Out Va ve with Automatic Di uent Va ve

and Manua Add Va ves for O2 and di uent) DSV optiona

 Dua water traps

 Regu ators and hoses

 (4) AI R22 Oxygen Sensors

 CCR XT air ce uti izing abrasion resistant SuperFabric

The Breathing Loop

The O2ptima incorporates a back mounted, dua counter ung design. The breathing oop consists of the

BOV or DSV, breathing hoses and hose fittings, inha ation and exha ation counter ungs, scrubber

canister, canister end cap, and e ectronics head. Gas f ows in a c ockwise direction—from the eft

shou der—to the diver—to the right shou der.

Component Features and Functions

Counterlungs

The O2ptima uses two detachab e back mounted

counter ungs. The counter ung position keeps

them as c ose to the diver’s ung centroid as

possib e providing exce ent breathing

characteristics in a variety of diver positions. They

are adjustab e for optima positioning and easi y

unzip from the center pane to remove for c eaning

and inspection.

The counter ungs consist of an abrasion resistant

outer bag and a removab e we ded po yurethane

inner b adder. The b adder is accessib e through a

zipper on the side of each counter ung.

The back side of the counter ungs attach direct y to the scrubber canister. The breathing oop hoses

attach to the front of the counter ungs using threaded connections.

The exha ation counter ung has an overpressure/dump va ve ocated at the bottom of the ung. An

interna water trap is ocated in the bottom of the exha ation counter ung to make de-watering the oop

easy.

Breathing Hoses & Fittings

The hose diameter and engths have been specifica y chosen to

provide the best ba ance of comfort and ow work of breathing. The

hose engths are some of the shortest in the industry due to the

ocation of the behind-the-head scrubber canister. This not on y keeps

the work of breathing ow, but a so reduces drag and uncomfortab e

vibrations occasiona y encountered with excessive hose engths when

scootering or swimming against strong f ow.

The hoses have threaded fittings attached to the counter ung ends.

Each fitting uti izes a doub e O-ring sea to he p ensure oop integrity. The hoses are 15 inches in ength

standard. Other sizes are avai ab e for improved fit on sma er divers.

Divesoft B V + ADV + MAVs

The Divesoft BOV (Bai Out Va ve) comes standard on the O2ptima.

(The Dive Rite DSV is optiona .) The BOV features an integrated ADV

(Automatic Di uent Va ve) and manua oxygen and di uent addition

va ves.

The BOV and ADV functions are contro ed by the knob on the front

of the BOV. With the knob turned horizonta y, the BOV is in c osed-

circuit mode and you are breathing “on the oop”. Bai ing out is
